When is the best time of year to plant roses? Here I'll go over the pros and cons of planting in spring, summer, fall and winter. It depends a lot on your climate and circumstances, but also a bit on whether you're planting grafted or own-root rose. For the difference between the two, see my video on the topic here: • Own Root vs. Grafted R...

Hi Jason, big fan of your channel. There's one climate you missed. I live in what's called a Mediterranean climate on the west coast of the United States. Here in January we have our springtime:-in-the-winter. Winter rains in this mild climate are the perfect time for many plants to establish themselves before the bruising heat & dry summer. Of course some plans have gone dormant, but many plants begin to show new Life in January. The roses around here have definitely gone through a slow phase, but they are starting to put out fresh tips and some even lightly blooming. It "feels in my bones" like the right time to me to plant roses, and the garden stores have also started carrying roses.

Hi Jason, I just got some bare root roses at home depot, I'm in 8b, central texas, I was curious what do you consider mild winter? Also, thank you for these videos you make, they are super informative 👏
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. 8b is pretty mild - and a lot like my own area. It's a tough call around here whether I'd plant bare root outdoors. If the soil is workable and you're not expecting deep cold, you could go ahead. That said, if you just stored those bare roots in a cool place, you could probably hold off until February when the temps are rebounding.

Hi, Jason! Thanks for your advice. I observed the Belinda's Dream rose in your video and wondering. Is it easy to grow Belinda's Dream in the Pacific Northwest? I had got it with her own-root. However, she was really stressed and lost almost all leaves during the summer. After that, she could not have decent bud eyes nor leaves (All turned black). I do not think it is going to survive this winter.
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear it. My own-root 'Belinda's Dream' roses do take a bit of time "finding their legs" - like 2 seasons before they really seem happy in the ground. I wonder why yours had such a difficult time - mine aren't fast to start, but usually don't stress after transplant the way you're describing. I'd say Belinda's worth the effort long-term in general (though maybe not for your specific rose)

Hi, I’m a rose newbie, and I’m learning all I can atm, I was wondering what your opinion was in bringing your roses inside for the winter if you had a proper grow room/ set up for it? I’m a cut flower farmer in Edmonton Alberta and it gets really cold here, I’m contemplating either a small greenhouse (unheated) or bringing it inside. Any guidance would be appreciated.
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it can be done, but it's a little tricky keeping them in active growth all winter. I'd be inclined towards the unheated greenhouse or a cooler indoor space (I often tuck some of my roses into the garage - it's gets cold in there, but above freezing)

I bought bare root roses and potted them up when they arrived in the spring. Normally I would plant them right into the landscape and bury them deep covering the graft but because I put them in pots I didn't get all of the graft buried. Now I want to plant them in the landscape, can I bury them deeper than what they were in the pot?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lori. You sure can - if you want. Many people (like you) choose to bury the graft union. I like to have it at the surface so I can keep an eye on it - the graft union is sometimes susceptible to damage/disease. Anyhow, it should be no problem to reposition it below the surface when you plant.

@FraserValleyRoseFarm

I love the old garden roses (Damasks), but they're once-blooming. 'Rose de Rescht' is a Portland that I love for scent, and it reblooms throughout the season. For modern roses, there are plenty with a good scent. 'Heirloom', 'Mister Lincoln', 'Fragrant Cloud' in hybrid teas (just off the top of my head) 'Don Juan', 'Alchymist' & 'Westerland' for climbers. Have a look at what you're local suppliers offer, and then run them through the helpmefind database to see how other gardeners rate the scent.

Hi, where in the house is the best place to keep rose cuttings?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 5 жыл бұрын
When I was doing cuttings in the house, I chose a room with a large east-facing window. Morning sun, then bright indirect light for the rest of the day. North facing might be my next best, or anywhere that it's not getting too much direct sun. The main trick is to keep the right level of humidity, which is tricky if it gets too hot.
