Glad the Mitsubishi Pajero got a good mention. It’s just a dam good car. Hoping all tho there is talk Mitsubishi do bring this beast back to Australia. I can never understand a lot of reviewers who seem to be supervised when they review Mitsubishi cars of any type and say they are a great buy, best in class, so reliable, great motors, do what you want it to do, and they go on. This is probably why there are still so many current and old Mitsubishi cars on our roads. They’re just great cars.

I had a 2010 platinum version Pajero had one recall to fit a larger earth strap, had it for near 10 years now my son owns it and not once did it let us down where as my friends had the Prado and in the same time they had well over 7 recalls and were under powered. The most surprising car we have ever owned, we had Toyotas and they all needed far more repairs than people ever tell.

For an all rounder I'd personally go for a 2005 and above 120 Prado GXL in Petrol with good service hostory, (find the leathers just get destroyed by this stage), klugers would come a close second if towing and offroading not required Bulletproof cars

To this day, the only vehicle that I regret trading in was my 1999 NL Pajero. In 2009, I traded it for a new E70 X5 (3.0D). Unbeknownst to me at the time, but I went from a well built, durable and reliable vehicle (Pajero) to a somewhat well built but lacking durability vehicle (X5). The X5 while under warranty was OK. But from year 4 and up, the gremlins started. The Pajero, I had for 10 years and experienced not a single issue - just replaced consumables (ie. tyres, battery, brake rotors & pads etc). The X5 in a shorter period of ownership, I had multiple issues of various nature from electronic gremlins to minor mechanical failures, and two or three recalls. This experience has soured my taste for the brand ever since, and I used to be a huge fan.

Bang for buck, the 120 Prado is definitely the pick here. You can get a nicely modified sub 200k km one for under $20k. The petrol 4.0L V6 is the best Prado ever made imo and will last forever. Thirsty but a gun on and off road.

is there anything wrong with 2008-2012 4th gen pajeros? i was considering a 3.8 Mivec Pajero from 2008 (since the 2008 model year seem to be hella common and i want a 7 seater). and which model year starts using the 5 speed A750 transmission? are the 4 speed dependable? are 5 speed exclusive to 3.8 mivec and 3.5L engines or what? are they as thirsty as people here claim them to be? any answers would be appreciated

They were all 5 speed autos or 5 speed manuals by this stage. Fuel use around town was in the high 15’s to 20 lts per 100klms for the 3.8. Big car being driven by anxious parents from one kids appointment to the next and will you use a lot of unleaded. Out on the highway, very efficient. The diesel 3.2 was a cracker and much more fuel friendly. It still liked a drink around town. I had a 3.2 2001 mdl that was brilliant. Only thing I hated was the barn door on the rear. Owned it until death by accident in 2015. Thing is, petrol are much cheaper to service than diesel. Oh, don’t believe the advertising. Doesn’t matter which one you purchase. Anymore than 10000 klm service intervals will guarantee an early death.

@@whomcares3438 thanks for clarification. unfortunately, since i live in middle east, diesel options are non existent, therefore only having 3.0, 3.5 and 3.8 mivec. since a 2008 pajero with 3.8L mivec has a 5 speed, it should be fine right? and yeah, they are hella durable, bet you could’ve had it to this day if it wasn’t for that accident. thank you very much kind sir, i may actually consider buying that pajero

I drive a Hilux for its farming utility, off-road ability and as a base for long road touring with the lift on canopy but I’d also happily own a Pajero for city/regional commutes and some off-roading - even the humble Triton has shown much netter off-road capability than the Isuzu/BT-50 cousins - I looked at a Sante Fe but glad I didn’t commit because the poor Hyundai reliability has now been discovered - Kia which was a no go zone has now leap frogged It’s South Korean cousin - don’t even touch European, UK, US, Indian, or Chinese brands unless you like pain, empty wallets and sleepless nights and that includes US ‘trucks’ - folk who have been buying them here in Australia have no idea what pain in they’re in for unless they don’t care because they like their guns, hound dawgs and playing the geetaarr.

Hi Neb, my info is not misconstrued, all vehicles mentioned can be had for under $20k AUD. They might not be advertised as such but very rarely does a used car sell for the advertised price. Also, looking through regional wholesalers, auctions and private sales can uncover bargains. Just because a certain huge online Aussie classifieds states certain selling prices, does not equate to what price cars are actually swapping hands for. - AK

A Nissan Patrol is a great off-roader, but as sophisticated as a kick in the bollox by modern standards I used to have Toyota Landcruisers as my go to, but that was a looooong time ago. Car manufacturers get upset if they have 1 in 100,000 bad comments about their vehicles. Jeep are quite content with 50,000 in 100,000. In America customer satisfaction is called "Fuck off. Buy a Far Eastern vehicle and stop being so demanding. Things are meant to break within a day or 2".

OMG, are you kidding me. Some of your picks are ok, but try and find a good reliable, (which you carry on about so much), Nissan Patrol for under $20k. I did look and OMG, they are all rough, very high k's, uncomfortable, very noisy, crap to drive, and that 3L diesel, terrible, did a big pass on them. Next, I did have laugh, a good condition Prado, which I love, owned one for14 years, but again under $20k, all high k's, very rough and that diesel, terrible, that's why I go rid of mine, useless tow vehicle, dangerous in fact and I only tow a camper trailer. Then next one, are you serious a 100 series LC for under $20k, what planet do you live on. I did find a very good one and have a guess what he wanted $60k, no kidding. Then of course you had to bag the Jeep Grand Cherokee, are you telling me that 50% are junk. I do talk to every Jeep owner I have come across and that's many in my travels and only 1 out of a big number who said wouldn't buy another, many said, best tow car I have ever owned. I have 2, a 2010 WH diesel, traveled all over and only a drive shaft bearing, OMG, a $250 bearing in 7 years. My later model 2015 V6 petrol Overland is absolutely fantastic, everything still works and what a ride, quite, smooth, powerful, tows fantastic, love the self leveling suspension and great fuel economy. As you do say with other makes, it's how you look after them, it's the same with Jeep, look after it and it will look after you. OMG, sorry for ranting on for so long. Compared to all these cars here, this would be far and away the best buy.www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2012-jeep-grand-cherokee-laredo-auto-4x4-my12/OAG-AD-21964037/?Cr=0
