I am pretty new to turntables myself and I completely agree with your usability observation. I have a very nice turntable that came with a rather expensive ($1,200) cartridge, but I find its usability to be a huge factor in what keeps me from using it as often as I might otherwise. I don't like having to adjust the belt to change speeds but equally frustrating is that it doesn't come with a built-in dust cover, so I had to buy an aftermarket one. While it looks beautiful, it's huge and needs to be stored safely somewhere when not in use. It's a chore. Finally, I like the idea of swapping cartridges around (we're audiophiles after all), but my tonearm, while truly excellent, doesn't have a detachable headshell. For all of these reasons, I'm thinking about dumping it and just buying a decent Technics SL-1200G or even just a GR (quite a bit less expensive). Because, to your point, what good is something - even if it sounds amazing - if you don't actually use it. I may be fooling myself, but I think I would use the Technics more frequently and that's kind of the point. I can see why Steve Guttenberg made the same change. You may sacrifice a tiny bit of sonic performance, but more than make up for it in enjoyability. Love your channel so much! Always thoughtful and nicely produced - and your room is beautiful.

Kind of the way I’m also streaming more instead of getting up and going to the cd player to change disk’s. I can stream any of what I have in cd’s and not have to get up. Sounds pretty lazy I understand but that’s what I deserve after a lifetime of working.

@@jamesschneider3828 I went from vinyl, to cassettes them CD's for the convenience (old fart). Streaming beats them all for ease of just listening. I got the itch to get a turntable last year for the first time in twenty years, for me, I've reconnected to the hobby and Streaming is just for background music now. I forgot how physical media is vastly superior for becoming involved in the experience. in the past even for less money and double or triple the hours of listening ,today ,one can find a gem in under 500€ cartridge but good ones are around 1.000€ and really good close or a litle more than 5.000 € ,this with a second hand mint condition turntable it cant be better i have a SL-1000mkII and for years every guy i knew said ,you need to buy a modern and better turntable this guy at the time owned a early 90s ´thorens ,he had forgoten that i was the one who told him to buy it ,i also have one of those,they were the best but might be because of the stylus being suplied by Ortofon ,they look a lot like regular stylus series but they sound incredible and the stylus as 3 times more hours of listening and the sound is just like the 2Mblack if it where more eficient , like some 2m red i found it hard to believe that ortofon that meaNT QUALITY IN THE PAST ,NOW WAS SELLING SO BAD CARTRIDGES, I KNOW THEY NEED TO MAKE MONEY BUT SO CHEAP(sorry for the caps lock but it´s my keyboard failing)i couldn´t belive ,now i wish i had a lot of good substitution needles that just don´t exist anymore , some say they are good but they never heard old stylus this is the best they think are possible, i asked some new users that told me that is 1.000€ pro-Ject was so perfect ,i just told him ,have you got 30 minuts and i went to my home and played first the mettalica lp master of puppets ,then electric by the cult ,after the dream syndicate live at the rajii´s he couldn´t belive the sound was from an old turntable and when i told him that all the system was from 76 ,he was blown away this with a PLC-590 from pioneer and a V15 sure caRtridge and stylus ,he was saying like how could it be a 70´s system with so good sound ,i had to explain that he spent almost 5.000€ in a system, but if he had given me the money i would get him a not so powerfull system but the same type of sound as mine ,well he sold everything he had and told me you have 3.000€ buy me a system,it has to have a good cd player ,a turntable, amplifier, tuner, minidisc deck and speakers so i did it by not only using ebay but a national site that sometimes i find there top end models for no more than 150€ like the sansui 90´s deck i bought him for 145€ restored and looking new not a scratch nothing,the turntable a SL-1310 with a N95 sure stylus and the 270C as option ,both came with the turntable aslo in mint condition with some parts looking like the SL-1200mkII cost me 195€ but in mint condition ,etc. now i have guys in their 20´s or 30´s aking me to buy a system for them ,and some might think i´m stupid because i don´t keep any money for me, i have pleasure in giving them the pleasure of listening music with quality

I have also upgraded the arm and cartridge to a Rega RB2000 (second hand silver arm) and a Hana ml m/c cartridge. You now have a good front end and you can improve it if you upgrade your arm and cartridge. The Ingenium is good enough to accept m/c. Thanks for the video. My best upgrade was getting some isoacoustics mini pucks (3) for my Rega P6, I took the original feet off and the pucks fitted perfectly inside the metal base of where each original rubber foot went, much to my surprise. I used a £2 coin to raise the rear foot as weight is mainly there. The sound difference was incredible. My P6 came with a dedicated power supply, as does all Rega from P6 onwards. And its ultimately cheaper than your £1500 version. I've MC cartridge factory fitted. I went from a P1. For your overall spend am wondering why you didn't go for a P8.

Hey Terry great work mate, I was thinking about doing the tonearm next for my ingenium, but you have got me partially interested in the psu, but my problem is....from where I'm sitting £1500 is a bit excessive for a separate box with a on off switch, electronic speed adjustment and a extra rubber band, I'm pretty sure it costs no where near that to produce. I want it, but I just don't think it's price point is justified....I do appreciate that Avid are premium products, but sometimes you do feel your being taken for a mug.

Very enjoyable videos and especially like the industry interviews. If you are new to vinyl, be aware that we have very few actual manufacturers left. Goldring sadly gave up manufacturing most of their own models many years ago. The E Series are in fact budget Audio Technica VM models in a pretty moulded outer shell. What you have here is effectively the VM95E (£40) in a posh frock selling for £100. BTW the Goldring 2000 series carts are using Nagaoka parts......similar story. My advice - go to the source and fit an actual VM95ML. The nude tip and micro line stylus will be a very significant upgrade and is terrific value.

Hi Terry, I think it’s interesting that you remembered one of your contributors comments that the cartridge is the most important part. Would you now agree that the turntable is more important? It’s been my experience that the turntable affects the fundamentals of the music whereas the cartridge affects the tone. If you don’t get the fundamentals sorted, it doesn’t matter if the tonal balance is not spot on. You’re absolutely right about the tonearm being next on your list. I look forward to your next part. My journey started with a second hand deck. Gradually I’m replacing old worn and low spec parts with brand new higher spec items and the next on the list is, you guessed it, the power supply. Poor power management induces noise in the motor, which despite it’s best effort travels along the belt and into the platter where it smears the playback signal. Good luck on your next step.

It's the power supply that controls a big part of TT playback. I have a Linn LP12 and have upgrade the psu a few times. And with that it how runs at a prefect 33 1/3/45 rpm witch means lower noise floor and lower wow. And so just like what you are now hearing is better playback. Power supply upgrade is very very good way to better sound.. I bet once you hear how good vinyl can sound you will not listen to digital as much

recently saw that a good budget plan that suggested 30% turntable,30% tone arm, 30% phono stage, 10% cartridge. When I started with vinyl, I figured since the cartridge was the voice of the system , just upgrade the heck out of the cartridge. But as my knowledge improved , along with my playback, I learned how important the other elements were to performance, as if you were trying to read a book in a paint shaker , that's the world of micro vibrations the cartridge lives in without good mechanical support, and of course, the phono stage would translate that book into your language. DC motors are speed controlled by voltage, so a better power supply will give a more consistent and controlled speed, resulting is less blurring of the information retrivied. My turntable has a belt running on the outside. of the platter, and my next planned upgrade is a better power supply that doesn't provide push button speed changes,. I will still be changing the speed by moving a belt, my table is so hardcore about speed optimization at 33 1/3 , they don't even advertise they have that 45 rpm is available, , although the 45 rpm belt groove is provided. Like most manufacturers, they use a smaller drive pulley than the Avid design, using the added belt wrap for mechanical belt control instead of using two belts , thinking, as some manufacturers do, that a second belt is just adding a way to transmit twice the motor noise. Which approach is better , really just depends on how well either belt drive design is executed,

I own this turntable and have been an active audiophile for over 3 decades. The best value for money upgrades for this deck are a tonearm and platter. The rebadged RB110 that comes as std with the Ingenium is in my view not good enough for a TT at this price point and a limitation with its fixed counterweight position and construction materials. I fitted a new old stock Mega RB330 purchased from a Rega dealer, and fitted a Goldring cart comparable in price to yours and wow. Massive difference. The tonearm took about 15 mins to change and the improvement in resonance and frequency accuracy was significant. The platter upgrade then raised the performance further with improved depth to the sound. For me spending more than this on this deck pushed the price too close to the next AVID model up and could not justify the AVID power supply cost.

The belt on its own has wow and flutter, because they're not perfect constructed, adding another belt eliminates this problem hopefully, rotating one belt might improve this as well to a different position, plus there's another benefit you don't need to have so much tension from the motor on the inner platter What again reduces noise. try a silicone belt might be better from a good "manufacturer" That is one thing I can't seem to find out from manufacturers how round their belts are, maybe looking for a manufacturer who manufactures o-rings for the glass industry, you're more likely to get a better quality belt especially in your circumstances you can move the motor . It's important you get your azmuth right doesn't mean it's correct the cartridges can have slight variations so even if it's set up correct it can be out meaning this can only be done with a scope 100%, But lining it up by eye and ear especially,; can get you there, look at Wally tools he makes a good azimuth alignment tools protractor with a mirror will give you better azmuth alignment where you can see the reflection of the body of the cartridge and the cantilever alignment he makes a good one. When putting a new cartridge use the arm manufacturers overhang specification then just a protractor. Here's some cheap feet for you or anybody ! You need better isolation and ideally draining the motor and main bearing but we were going to that. Firstly ideally and very simple a box that is same size or is bigger than your turntable constructed out of wood or similar 3" high fill it with blonde sand kiln dried sand 2-2½ inches thick place a board on top of the sand ideally 18mm minimum thick. To make a great isolation foot can be used with the sand tray or on its own, get some packs of jelly break them into four squares but not individually! paint the jelly with waterproof PVA glue watered down about 10% leave to drive for 24 hours, is prevents the jelly from drying out and getting hard. You can just place the jelly under the tt feet or put them in some furniture sliders with a felt bottom. One of the best isolations you can get. If you've got a heavier ttable you can melt the jelly into a container and make it taller.

@@PursuitPerfectSystem well the manufacture they are avid? they should know! but there is a chart on the internet and all you need to do is to know the length of the arm and it will give you the overhang needed. the overhang is taken from the tip of the stylus to the spindle in the middle centre. You can get a piece of wood or similar white stiff card, marking out with a precision ruler the overhang drill out a hole for the spindle a comfort fit, have a pencil mark on the side of the peace for its given overhang, You can see this from the side when looking across the cartridge stylish tip next to it. Well done Terry lovely video. But you should have keeped your first cartridge fitted and try that one first with the new power supply. Then changed the cartridge. Please remember cartridge is the last thing to change always. You started right with the heaver platter, next would be the power supply. Which you have now done. So the next thing to change is the arm. When you've done that, then you can try different cartridges. Yes vinyl playback is very expensive. I better way to have started is is to have gone with rega the P6. All the best Terry. You are a vinyl master already.

Terry. Careful of the upgrade bug. It has a malevolently addictive bite. I would agree for this model of TT the power supply upgrade was your more impactful upgrade. A cartridge change will only alter sound. People focus on it because it is more in your face, even if you went to one that cost less the sound would still change. For the better? That is a matter of taste. The power supply alters two areas; however, these changes are subtle. A more stable speed and reduced wow and flutter is not as apparent, but you should notice a singer's pitch is now more consistent and accurate. There is also a lot to be said for whenever you want to change the speed, not having to muck about with removing the platter and transferring the belt to a different pully. I used to own a TT where you had to do that. It sounded great but I hated the hassle. It took a few years, but when I replaced it, I made sure the new one had electronic speed control.

I take a somewhat different approach. To me, a vinyl-centric system is not primarily about value for money, but rather about value for sound. Like this. The fixed head and pivot tonearm is the point where the sound is introduced to the audio system, and where the first distortion is fed in - namely tracking error. And this distortion never goes away. So, for any given cartridge, it is there throughout the chain. My choice thus is a zero tracking error tonearm first, then cartridge. And some cartridges really have a different sound under zero error conditions. And yes, the difference is easily heard. Obviously not the cheaper route...

Try swapping the motor over and have it in the front ideally close to the left corner post of the frame as much as possible. This is better operation it eliminates jitter on the counter lever of the cartridge, the ideal position is to have the motor parallel to the arm about halfway so seven inches in inline, any movement to the left and in the front will help. You could try the side on the left but don't think this would be better. I'm surprised haven't told you this to stick the motor there, and put it on sheet of blu tack you'll want to fasten it when you found it's position no movement is important. How do you find the E3 because it takes a bit of time to break in about 60 hours I think. A fantastic cartridges the goldring 1042 350£ try one of them they are one of the best cartridges you can get under 10000

Avid recommends the metal platter upgrade, before even touching that cartridge. According to them, the platter upgrade provides the biggest bang for the buck. It is about $650 for the platter upgrade. Also, Avid makes their own protractor for the Rega arm, which is on the plug and play. Another upgrade or more of an addition, is the Avid acrylic cover. It's about $105 US dollars.

Also, the Hana el would have been a better choice for that tonearm. There is no vta adjustment, the Hana is very close in height, weight, and tracking force (2 grams), the limit of the counter weight, as set up on the plug and play Rega arm. The anti skate is also not adjustable, another reason to stay with something close in parameters to the Rega Carbon, which is what is on that arm.

In the old days, it was like for whatever the whole turntable cost, about 25% of that price or so you’d put into the cartridge/stylus assembly, so if you had a 200 pound (or dollars, etc) turntable you would get a cartridge that was 50 pounds or so, but if you had 1000 pound turntable, you get a 250 pound cartridge or so, generally. Edit: And the phono preamp was usually part of the preamp or integrated amp, but occasionally was external at the cost extremes of the equipment.

Thanks Terry. Yeah, it's hard to quantify the notion that just swapping out the power supply will provide better sound quality as it doesn't appear to be a part of the signal chain, but it really does. Something like this is definitely for those who are all set with their choice of turntable and are set with their choice of cartridge. It just makes sense in that case. For anyone else, there's always the option of looking at alternative turntables.

I agree set with the TT Cartridge I think exploration of them might come after as you might prefer something else if there is some change to the base of the sound, but either way its all fun

Funny how records have taken on a second life. I’m of an age where the inconvenient and scratchy experience of records went by the way side to be replaced with the far superior CD. Now the exceptionally more convenience of lossless streaming. I do remember the 70s with some fondness, playing dads albums on his Onkyo 3 in 1. Turning the volume up to 11 while he was not home, to the annoyance of the neighbours.

Question, did you listen to a Rega p3 or p6 before you decided to purchase the avid, and are you using a phono amp. Next, hurry up and stick a Goldring 1042 in that arm, you will then have a grin from ear to ear, and the sound will not come from the speakers but from the band standing in front of you in your room.

Belt drive turntables allow the drag of the stylus on the vinyl groove to ever so slightly slow on heavily modulated segments , reducing impact . The greater torque of powerful direct drive motors , aided by continuous speed sensing & regulation is a superior way to maintain exact speed with a dynamically changing load . Vintage cheap DD tables gave DD bad audiophile reputation . Modern DD can be better , but not at the entry level .

Oh for back to the days when you would literally pay one Penney, $0.01 for a cartridge when you bought a new turntable. Upgrade at time of purchase for $1.00! It got around "Fair Trade" price fixing. Discussed elsewhere? You have no idea how cheap the cost was on some of the cartridges back then. As a rep for a number of major cartridge brands back in the day, I had some that listed for $50 with costs

Moving the power supply and thus altering the belt tension definitely does alter the speed, you can see it with a strobe like the KAB and you can change it from being too fast to too slow and with patience can get it spot on.

Oh dear, looks like you are on the slippery slope going down that rabbit hole. I have been there and it’s difficult to get off. I do experiment though with budget upgrades that’s why I clicked on this video.

@@PursuitPerfectSystem I am lucky in that once I got the sound quality that I wanted back in the 80’s/90’s I was able to stick with it only needing to change things that wore out or when new technology came along. I think the term is buy once cry once. I now content myself with little budget tweaks here and there more out of something to do rather than outright amazing upgrades.

Looked long and hard at the Avid Ingenium. I do not feel it represents good value for money. The tonearm and cartridge included are not good. The PSU upgrade is a must for me. Also personally don't like the cork platter. I do not know if its even possible to upgrade the tonearm but you've already paid for something that you aren't going to use. Factoring in the PSU, a £1500 turntable becomes a £3000 turntable without even upgrading the tonearm and cartridge. I think there are better options at this price point considering this such as the Michell Gyro SE. I already own this turntable and wanted another turntable for a different system.
@PursuitPerfectSystem
@PursuitPerfectSystem Жыл бұрын
I think your looking at it all wrong, I don’t think anyone would buy this with the intention of not using the arm and or the cartridge - it’s intended as a very nice starting point that might be enough for some people and over time they can improve it if they want. It also brings avid products more into affordability for those who appreciate the looks build and design. For those reasons it offers very good value for money
@Distorted-Vision
@Distorted-Vision Жыл бұрын
@@PursuitPerfectSystem The Ingenium isn't really designed for upgrade. But the cartridge it comes with is an Audio Technica AT91 which retails for around £24. Its about as budget a cartridge gets. The tonearm has fixed anti skate so restricts your cartridge choice.
@PursuitPerfectSystem
@PursuitPerfectSystem Жыл бұрын
Yep, you can change the arm I am 99.9% sure, AVID have just released 2 new ones and you can use shims for a larger sized cart on the included arm. You are restricted with some things with this arm but thats for getting serious about setup though so a diff arm would be needed for that.

Multi thousnd pound turntable with a 100 pound cartridge?? The real problem with buying cartridges is that its almost impossible to audition them. I have a wonderful hifi dealer who I've used for many years who allowed me to take some expensive cartridges home for extended listening, but I believe this to be the exception rather than the rule. It is ultimately cheaper in the long run than buying solely on recommendation.

Great video, i really like your style. But for me it sounds like Avid sells you something half-assed, just to sell you more for "upgrades". For 1500£ you get a complete Technics 1500C for example. Which is a "more than you will ever need" turntable. Sorry but for me this is a scam . (Not you!) . Cheers
@PursuitPerfectSystem
@PursuitPerfectSystem 5 ай бұрын
Depends on how you look at it - 2 years in with the Technics you want better sound what can you do, buy a whole new turntable. With the AVID you can upgrade smaller bits that cost less and keeps the lion share of what you like the same. They could put it all on to start with but then it would cost more so its pros and cons

Enjoyable, but $100 cartridge is barely an upgrade and a big handicap here. Discussing $1500 power supply units and new tone arms in the context of a $100 cart feels a bit … pointless.
@PursuitPerfectSystem

It’s actually the opposite it shows how important they are and how much benefit they offer regardless of what is often assumed as the only important thing the cart. If your not hearing the full sound of a £100 cart what’s the point in spending more before the TT foundation is right. Don’t be a snob it sounds arrogant and dismissive and it’s belittling to people which is very rude.

What annoys me is that if you buy a Ferrari, you don’t expect to then spend more on a new engine, it should be designed right in the first place, this is where hifi is bit of a piss take, they make a product that’s not properly designed and then charge you another grand for what you should have had in the first place!
