I am a Rolex man but in April 2023 I bought my first Omega, the new 3861 sapphire sandwich with the new clasp and love it. I managed to get 20% off retail at my local AD so I was very happy with that. Don't buy for value retention, buy for how much you like it. Keep up the good work

Have been lucky enough to have 3861 and 1861, much prefer the 3861, the dial looks so much more interesting and appealing, the case is more compact and best of all it doesn’t have the shocking 1861 bracelet!! The 861 looks lovely too, that’s the one I would keep personally.

I like the discontinued 1861 Speedy, it’s perfect for me. Didn’t like the new one, believe it or not it was too perfect 🤷🏻‍♂️

A bit more vintage indeed ! Even in 2023, the pre-1997 Omega Speedmaster chronographs are the best quality/price option without any doubt! As new models cost 7K, these pre-1997 movement 861 models can still be found for 3K... My 1994 (25 years Apollo 11) Speedmaster was used as a daily beater from July 1994 to June 2016 without needing a service. So 22 years without any problems, the newest models still need to prove that kind of reliable performance... #MoonwatchUniverse

I love my speedy, I got the newer one. I paid four thousand dollars for mine, got it from a friend. It is amazing, and I like it’s simplicity where I just need to set the time and wind it, no GMT function or date. It is versatile, I can wear it with anything.

I had the old one (yours) but hated the bracelet and could never get a comfortable fit. I got rid of my old hesalite and got the new sapphire sandwich. As someone whose owned both i must say its superior.

The rounder edges on the old speedy can also just be from wear. I wore a Planet Ocean for 14 years 24x7 and all the edges were softened by just wearing the watch. When I bought it, everything was sharp but after 14 years the whole watch mellowed out and was supremely comfortable because of it.

I have the 1863 version SS.. I wouldn’t change it for any other version Including the new 3861 which felt delicate and lighter . I did however purchase the new bracelet to get that vintage vibe via uncleseiko who does a fantastic e version of it.. soon get the best of both worlds. I’ll Never part with my speedy.

Nice. Ive got an SMP300 Diver and when I become Chartered Im considering another piece. Keep coming back to the Speedy as it is a great counterpart to the SMP. Would love it on a black crocodile leather!

I got an Omega leather rally strap. It cost a pretty penny 3 years ago. I am guessing it costs close to 400.00 USD now.

I bought the 1861 on the metal bracelet and then added the OEM black alligator later. Much nicer on the alligator. Those male end links on the metal ruin it.

Good video sir. Just ridiculous though. I like these watches but why would you want to keep 2 watches that are basically identical? This is why I haven't bought one of these. Just silly tweaks to keep collectability going. My recommendation? Keep the older version...looks better...trade the newer one in for a vintage professional Rolex..far more collectable with some differentiation across the range.

I have had the sapphire sandwich for about 10 years. I’ve tried to love it but never could. I put a new bracelet on it but that didn’t help. I won’t sell it because maybe my son will love it someday. It just sits in the box.

It is unbelievable the poor value retention that most Omega watches have. Buying an Omega at full retail is almost as bad as buying a Rolex over retail.

To me, Ω is like a super hot girl who’s also a dirty, dirty slut. I can appreciate the beauty but never ever want to be attached to one. Maybe Rolex takes it too far. But, Ω could certainly take a lesson or 5 about the benefits of exercising a little bit of exclusivity.

Not an issue. Buying a watch because of resale should not be a consideration at all. People should Buy watches they love and watches they can truly afford only. It's like buying a car.

Maybe for people who can only afford to have one watch in that price range as their holy grail makes sense not considering value retention at all. I can't or pretend speak for every watch collector. That would be arrogant and stupid. With that being said, if value retention is the priority of a collector, I don't think Omega is the brand to look at .🤷‍♂️. Omega and Rolex make the majority of my humble collection. Although value retention certainly matters, it is far from being the most important thing for me.

Personally I hate selling things like watches, I'd only do it if Im down on my luck. I don't worry about value retention with any of my other clothing or jewellery purchases, the price you pay should be the price youre willing to lose, if it holds/gains value, thats just a bonus

@@caspar_gomez Not every collector is the same. I could never have 30 ...40...50 watches because I love to wear my watches. I have a rotation of 11 that I wear on a regular basis, so when I like a new watch one has to go first before I buy the new one. You are lucky that your taste doesn't change. Mine does. For example, I used to love chronographs. Now I love divers, so while value retention is not my priority, it still matters to me since most of my collection is in a range >$5K. When I buy a watch with a retail price of $7K for $5K and eventually I sell it for $3.5K or $3K, I can live with that. However, buying at $7K and selling for $3K is a big no for me. As you can see there is no investment there. In fact, it is a lot of $ lost, but my collection gets refreshed and that makes me happy. 🤷‍♂️. For some people is impossible to understand that what works for them does not have to work for me or viceversa...😄..🤷‍♂️. In addition to Omega, I have GS, and Panerai in my collection as well. Those aren't brands with great value retention, but I still love them.

Congratulations on the new Speedy Andy. I love the monochrome dial of my 1863 sapphire sandwich but can certainly appreciate the lure to the 'real' patina of the 861. Decide which/both/neither to keep based on the heart. Certainly for me right now I have memories associated with my w1863 that might be a tad too much of a push to move it on. Good video, Andy. The first time I saw the 861 was way back in the early-90s. I was in the US Army at the time. A Warrant Officer was buying on at our Post Exchange. It was the coolest watch I ever saw at the time. He educated about its incredible history, which I didn't know. And, I swore to myself I would own one one day. At the time, I was buying Casio G-Shock for $20. I could not afford a Speedy on my pay. Unfortunately, life got in the way and the Speedy remained a wish. But, in 2020 I bought one (1863 Sapphire Sandwich) and have been wearing it ever since. It is a brilliant watch.

Keep the vintage, tritium looks better than super luminova. I have done similar only went more vintage with a 1963 version. My dream watch.

Hmmm tough one. The line is so shit even when new that the creamy is the way to go. That bracelet is cool. But as other have mentioned replicas are so good now. Check out the forstner bands 1450. You can pair it with the uncle seiko clasp which is superior (US1450 end-links are inferior hence the combo). But yeah - why can’t we get a 100m speedy. That would have stopped my buying like 4 other watches!

Prefer your older speedy patina on the Indices give it the vintage look that collectors like including myself, who prefer the tapered bracelet and looking out for an early version to add to my collection of Omega watches the only setback with older or vintage watches is servicing costs.

I'm looking at a 3rd Speedy (1969) When you see a collector with multiables of the same watch in different refs, you get it or you don't. You can't go wrong with buying more of what you love.

I would keep the old one as it is 100% made in Switzerland, it looks much better with more pleasing proportions, case and bracelet, and it has far more character than the new one.

The case is worn out if you ask me. The watch would be much better on a new case but the trouble is that this will upset watch fetishists since the watch would no longer be "original" and therefore it will be worth less.

I made the same call on the 3590.50 and have never been happier! Picked up mine about 5 years ago! So much character! The only catch is that the hands are newer service hands with luminova, but other than that, it's spot on original.

Meine Speedy trage ich seit 1969 täglich. Sie hat natürlich ihre Schrammen in all den Jahren erhalten, das ist eben Patina. Ich habe per Zufall das Modell mit dem Fehldruck, kein Witz, Omega hat aus Nachlässigkeit eine Speedy Serie ,keine Ahnung wieviele Exemplare produziert wurden, herausgebracht, auf der eine falsche Ziffer aufgedruckt wurde. Ich werde meine Speedy nur hergeben.

I have same as your original and finding commenting on which one you should keep tricky. I wouldn’t have bought the 90’s one so would have your dilemma but now you have it, I think the vintage aesthetic makes it a little more interesting. I have a 1994 Submariner and it’s age is what makes it cooler in my opinion especially as I’ve owned from new.

If it was my watch it would go straight to Omega for servicing. They'd rectify the not so great polishing & sort out the movement for the next 10 years. I'd specify to keep the original hands & bezel & let them change the Heselite. Omega might insist on changing the crown for warranty although you do get all the old bits back... just thrown in a bag. Brilliant watch, but sooner or later, the previous polishing will bug you.

Nice! I went through a half dozen Speedy Pro's before settling on my 3572.50 hesalite sandwich in 2015. The only other Speedy Pro I'd trade it for would be a 3592.50 with the gorgeous gilt movement.

As usual I’m going against the crowd… yea I know, it’s a gift 😊. This watch does zero for me… nothing. I bought the 3861 Sapphire and owned it for 3 months. I tried to like it but that face with those clinical white hands is just soulless… boring. The movement viewed through the Sapphire back I will admit is AMAZING. So… flicked it. Oh yea, I love Omega watches BTW. I have 3 that are just awesome. In order of preference : Planet Ocean (master chrono 43.5). Speedmaster 50th anniversary Snoopy, Speedmaster “57. I have a couple of other (non Omeg) pieces that aren’t worth mentioning. And long term I see the PO & Snoopy as permanent., the ‘57 leaving, and a Rolex Sub joining. That will give me a killer trio.

It’s all about perspective! I actually prefer the newer version including the new bracelet, and there are some great deals to be had overseas e.g. £3.5k-£4.4k brand new with box, papers and international warranty! Nice vid nevertheless!
