Why You Should NEVER Sew "Scant" Quarter Inch Seams: • Why You Should NEVER S...

I watched the painter's tape video because my piecing does not always go together well. I decided to start with the test of sewing 2 2.5" squares together using the same markings/foot as I always do, sew with 1/4" SA, press, and measure. My seam was perfect and my piece measured 4.5" exactly. So no changes are needed equipment-wise. However, since the issue has been highlighted, I have discovered my inaccuracies have to do with inconsistent cutting and taking my eye off the needle while sewing long stretches. Always somthing to improve 😊

To help alleviate pleats, I’ve found it helps to sew with the baggier side to the bottom. The dog feet help to pick up the slack. I do have to disengage my integrated walking foot first.

I started out with the painter's tape ledge. It made a HUGE difference. I have since found a purple sticky seam guide that I now use. It can be cut so I have a piece over my bobbin case 'window' then a separate one on down towards the edge of my machine extension table. I have a top loading bobbin and never need to remove it. It is repositionable so if I need to take it off, I can simply reapply it. I have found that the 1/4 inch foot and any marks on the throat plate do NOT help achieve the 1/4 inch seam. Once the fabric is being sewn by the needle it is too late to make adjustments. I believe it is important to feed the fabric in straight using the tape ledge or seam guide. Just my experience. On a side note, I am waiting for your follow up about Gammill? You had promised an extra video giving more info.

Your "1/4" seam will change depending on the thickness of the fabric you are sewing. That's why every tine you change fabrics you need to strip piece three 2 1/2" strips together then measure the middle piece. If it doesn't measure 2", you need to adjust your seam allowance accordingly Thicker fabrics will result in a seam allowance that is slighty less than 1/4". Regarding two pieces that are not exactly the same length, the longer piece should always be on the bottom as the feed dogs will take up slightly more fabric. You may also need to pin and ease but this will help. To cut down on stray threads, run your rotary cutter over any long seams before pressing. Obviously this will not eliminate all threads but it can cut down on many.

My pet peeve as a longarmer is seeing "folds" where you should see only nice flat seams! Usually, I can tell that the quiltmaker pressed from the back, did not turn it over and press again from the front to be sure all was flat. When I can stick my fingernail under those folds I get frustrated! I want to just say "oh well", and quilt along. But I don't because I want the work I'm doing on this quilt to look nice. Please press those quilt tops from the front to a) look for stray threads, b) look for bad tension and/or missed seams that will pop open, and c) no folds at the seams!

I saw the video too with the painters tape and thought the same thing about front loading bobbins.

While I never sew over pins, even very thin ones, IF I were to do it, I'd make sure to insert them perpendicular to the seam, not at a slight angle as you did in this video. You provide great advice every week (thank you!)--please show new quilters how to minimize the chance of the needle hitting a pin.

Agree with the shades of colour with different batches. My husband worked in the carpet trade and the manufacturers said that the next dye lot could be 10 degrees darker and 10degrees lighter, so you could actually get a huge difference. Always best to order exactly what you need from the same dye lot before the carpet was laid! Threads - ugh! You clean them up, you sew the quilt top, you iron it and find the little threads have sneaked out and multiplied again - drives me potty! LOL! Good tips!

Being a Bernina dealer, why didn't you mention presser foot #57N? It has a built-in edge guide to keep to 1/4" seam, instead of buying those magnetic guides. I get less errors such as pleats when I thoroughly starch fabric for piecing, before cutting. Especially for blocks that need precision. It's like getting laser cut pieces after you cut them and are stiff so no pleating or sliding around. Also, for the most accurate piecing lightly gluing the pieces together helps with the slipping and sliding and pleating. I did this for making a border of flying geese that was 48" long, and no trouble at all. What's going on with Gammill response?

Extra fabric? I follow the 'bigger on the bottom' rule and sew that seam 'fat' side toward the feed dogs. That helps. I also use my walking foot almost exclusively...this helps also.

The other advantage to the tape is a straight edge to keep the fabric straight while you sew.

And keeps it straight well before you get to the plate or the needle - no last minute adjustments. I never have to take my tape off.

I'm surprised the same color re-order is so far off on some fabrics. It's more reason to get enough plus a little the first time.

Why oh why do people push the scant 1/4. It just seems like you’re asking for trouble.
