Good Guide. But honestly, the best way to start is to go Beaver. Wood (lumber+planks) is always, always the most important thing in the early-mid game and still important throughout. Having Beavers means you harvest more, and you get a bonus in the production of planks with the right buildings. Frankly it's unbalanced as hell how big a difference it can be. Also if you're willing to risk it opening a dangerous glade first usually pays off. You can much more readily pick your buildings and assuming you picked rocks to embark with can usually snag whatever you need for the dangerous event from boxes if you don't have it already (in a pinch, like it requires money, make sure you have a trading post and can summon the merchant early to sell gears or some other expensive item).

Thank you for the feedback and tips Migolcow! I totally agree Beavers are a must on most maps. There are a few where some special modifiers reduce their effectiveness or make cutting wood more dangerous but for the most part their are the go to starter pack species :)

Good guide, but I have only one complaint: You didn't build a Trading Post. I think it is one of the first buildings you should build because it is very cheap and easy to build, and it starts the merchant count down. Maybe you are not in a position to trade NOW, but the merchant usually takes like 8 minutes to arrive from the moment you build the Post, so it is a good idea to build it for getting the merchant sooner.

Hi, yes, you are correct a trade post is a welcome addition, and I probably should have included it. It is also very varied and like gambling as you never know what you can get, so for the total beginners at the game I thought that it didn't provide much value compared to complex food, resolve and how to house settlers as well as solve glade events. But yeah, for another guide I should definitely include it. @@perafilozof Thank you. I've been playing AtS for a while now, I'm not an expert by any means, but I can beat the game in Viceroy difficulty. Still, I didn't know about the woodcutter's lodge options you show in this video. What I'm not very confortable using is all the Rainpunk mechanic. It seems overly complicated for just some tiny bonuses. I would like to hear your thoughts in regards to that mechanic..

@@dificulttocure As for the Rainpunk I have been avoiding it personally as I think it will be updated and changed a lot before final version so I didn't want to spend time on a mechanic that will be changed anyway. Once they say it is in it's final version I will start using it and make a guide about it.

I get really frustrated when I get a glade event that requires something I can't produce and I go through like 4 plus blueprints trying to make good choices while failing to find the actual item I want.

Hi, first try to trade for it. Second try doing an order with that item as a reward, third don't feel like you have to be able to solve everything. Trying to be a compleationist in this game is not going to do you any favors.

Is this still valid? Had read others suggest we should open as few small glades as possible so I usually open at most two, but I'm still learning!

Hi, good question. It is very situational, but to grow you need resources and room. On the other hand opening more glades increase the forest hostility rating which makes it harder to play. So the advice is to open glades when you need to grow or lack a resource or food and to invest in ways of reducing forest hostility so it doesn't give you huge penalties during storm season.

I think harpies have to be unloked in the smoldering city so if you just started the game, third species is always known, is it not?

Yes you are correct, but this guide isn't limited to the very first settlement you ever make. People play, stop for a while, and need a refresh course when they pick the game up again.

About the blue line (the threshold) where resolve starts generating reputation. Why and how that line jumps to a new level? Lizards are very easy to be pleased at the 1st level (15), but not so easy at the 2nd (22). So in order to gain maximum Reputation from Lizards on resolve 15 (before the threshold changes to 22) I must collect them as many as possible before pleasing them with complex food ?

Hi Dezmond, there is a game mechanic involved there: For every 1 full point of Reputation gained from a species, its Resolve requirement increases, up to maximum 50 Resolve after 5 points. This is done so that you have to finish some orders as well, not just use reputation from high resolve.
