For 10g more i prefer the Mini champ. Orange peeler/box opener, 2nd blade and nail cleaner are handy for me
@EBuff754 жыл бұрын
I carried the Executive for years. In college, the orange peeler worked really well for unlocking simple door locks on practice rooms, study rooms, etc.. Just reach into the crack between the strike plate and the door and then pull back, using the hooked part of it to snag and retract the latch. Sort of like using a credit card, but much easier. Also, the tip of the orange peeler is a flathead screwdriver.

Although it literally never ever gets mentioned, my favourite SAK is the Bantam. Essentially a trimmed down cadet which combines the bottle opener and can opener into an incredible single 'combi' tool which works great for either task. It's a single layer SAK weighing in at just 29g (1 ounce) which is 11g lighter than the SAK minichamp (also one of my favourites and on my keyring). It's an invisible knife which never leaves my person and I completely forget it's there.

I picked up the 2020 limited edition version in memory of my mother that passed away just a couple of weeks into 2021. She was much loved by everyone that knew her but she was my roommate, closest friend and confidant. My mother was Chronically ill and had been close to death several times over the last decade of her life but finally her illness came to an end on January 15 2021. Interestingly enough just 2 weeks after the passing of her father someone I greatly respected and considered a good friend. So in memory of my mother especially but my grandfather as well I picked up the Victorinox Cadet 2020 limited edition version in Indigo Blue it is and will always be a special piece of my pocket knife and EDC collection.

The Tinker was my first midsized real SAK that I bought in high school after I got my first job. Carried it everyday until I lost it on the ship in the Navy back around 2002. Just now bought another one (though I have about 8 or 9 other SAKs now). Forgot how great it was with such a simple set of tools!
@pudimdecana51 Жыл бұрын
I couldn’t quite wrap my head around your observations: first you say the pioneer x is too big, and shows that prefers a custom that is about the same size (thickness of the scales), then you say the cadet is too small… well, there is no in between (except maybe the Evo series, that have broader blades, at 85mm length, but with thicker scales and no alox). These custom scales are very cool and the addition of the pocket clip seems a nice touch. I really forget about my 2 layered SAKs in my pockets, especially when hanging with a pocket clip. They don’t bother me at all.

I've been a pocket knife EDC dude since probably around my freshman year of high school and I'm 38 in May. I was given the Victorinox Swiss Card not long after the release from my sister for Christmas. I love the Victorinox card and use it frequently but the tool I use the most from the Swiss card is the scissors. I've used the tiny writing pen and the little knife but I frequently return to the scissors. The Victorinox Swiss Card is probably the EDC item I keep with me that's the oldest EDC tool that I own. It would be either the card or a Kershaw Chive, the Chive was my first quality pocket knife. I love both tools but the Swiss card is in my wallet and goes with me everyday.

I always carry a victorinox, I got a huntsman from my grandfather and an SD classic from my other grandfather. I have since put the huntsman in my toolbox as I never had a use for the saw or the corkscrew and the SD classic still lives on my keychain. Now I carry a rambler in my watch pocket everywhere because I always need to use the small screwdriver, I also just bought a Tinker Deluxe because it has the small pliers and the big screwdriver which is exactly the toolset I need every day, I make jewelry and the pliers are perfect for bending wire, rings and squeezing beads, absolute 10/10 tools.
@ROE13004 жыл бұрын
So, based upon your comments and favorite knives you mainly use your SAKs for trimming loose threads (scissors) and cleaning/filing your nails (file). I use mine mostly while camping so my favorite is the Camper. I have uses for the reamer/awl, saw, and main blade. The secondary blade is useful for fine carving/whittling. The corkscrew holds an eye glass screwdriver, soon some tinder for fire starting, and can help increase the size of a hole bored by the reamer. Currently there is a ferro rod that replaces the toothpick. The tweezers are useful in removing splinters and ticks.

I now carry a cyber tool lite in a pouch on my belt, far too big for the pocket. I use pretty much every tool on there, with varying frequency, during my work day. I have a modified Huntsman that I use as a carving tool. I've built up a substantial collection of models over the years though.

I've carried a Tinker for years and I love it. I actually really like the secondary blade. I sharpen it at less of an angle to make it razor sharp. So the main blade is for boxes etc and the small blade is for fine cuts that I need a super sharp blade for.

I've always carried the Fieldmaster or the Huntsman; but more-so the FM because I prefer having a screwdriver over a corkscrew. and I don't mind carrying a knife with some weight. While I do carry dedicated blades, if I had to chose out of all my knives, I'd carry a SAK! My dad has carried one all his life, I think his is the classic red Fieldmaster, an it's served him well. I took it from him when it was gunked and the parts were stiff, but it was nothing a little soaking in water with dish detergent, brushing, drying, sharpening, and lubricating didn't fix! After that got his SAK nearly back to working like new (minus the inevitable wear marks that come with years of use; which I could have sent to Swiss Army for a total repair with new scale and dissembled cleaning, but I wanted the satisfaction of feeling accomplished lol). The smaller blades are for finer cutting work. For a knife enthusiast the blades are nothing to run home about, but it's good stainless steel, and in the hands of a person who's good at sharpening and honing, the blades easily fix. I would like if SAK opened up a "Custom Shop" where you could customize your SAK from ground up, your tools, size, scales, finish (stainless steel, blacked) ect. Would cost you much more but you get the SAK YOU want if none of their premade models match your fancy.

Great review Taylor. These knives are so iconic, and I believe every serious blade collector should own a few. The fit and finish for such a massively produced tool is remarkable and you can't beat the price for a Swiss-made product. I own a dozen or so SAKs and carry a Champ everywhere, I use it frequently and it's the "safe" knife when someone at works wants to borrow a blade for something. I have over a dozen Victorinox knives. My OG was a Camper. I carried that all through my high school and college years, including a year overseas where it was my only knife and tool for the entire year. Used it for opening cans, and bottles, and uncorking wine bottles. Used the main blade for cutting meat and cheeses. And the secondary blade for cutting and peeling fruit. I basically used every single tool on that almost daily for food preparation, except for the saw. I currently carry the mini champ alox. Before that, I carried a Manager, and still might return to it someday as it was a very good EDC mini knife.. And I carry a Pioneer in a pocket organizer in my car because, you never know when you might need a knife. And finally, I rotate among various knives on my desk, but mostly stick with the Climber.

I edc the compact and it's honestly perfect for me. The only tool I don't use on it is the parcel hook because the corkscrew is very useful for opening knots. the secondary blade I found more useful than the primary blade. I use the 2nd blade mainly for open boxes and cutting ropes/lines (doing dirty work). I have a Victorinox Hiker, the main blade for cutting foods/pealing fruit skins, etc. (doing food-related tasks), and leave the dirty stuff for the small 2nd blade. Opening boxes will always leave some glue residue on the blade, and often hard to wash away. The only reason I regret choosing the Hiker is the screwdriver, I will rather change it to a corkscrew instead. BTW, If you know how to open an oyster, you can open it using the bottle opener on your 91mm Swiss army knives(bigger is better). I used it to open at least a dozen of them when I don't have a proper oyster knife in hand.

I do the classic SD when I'm out (way out sometimes) in the field. For the weight there's nothing nearly so versatile: scissors for nail hygiene (can make the difference between swamp rot and comfort), knife is self explanatory, tweezers for thorns and cactus spikes, file for modifying equipment, and the end of the file is a basic screwdriver for adjusting my gear or camera equipment. Only thing I don't think I ever use is the toothpick.

25 years ago, when I was a kid - a "knockoff" didn't automatically mean "bad"! I had a knockoff with nice antler scales and I abused it and did all the things you should never do to your knife and it seemed almost unbreakable. I can't remember re-sharpening it at least once! Unfortunately some older kids stole it from me back in elementary when I got mugged by those punks who even took the patches that covered tho holes in my pants! They even cut those off with the very knife they took from me. I loved that knife man..

Have carried a Tinker every day for the last 30 years. Mainly because of the Phillips head screwdriver. Don't really use the main blade that much, I have my Boker Kalashnikov for that. Also have little Mini SAM'S in my Altoid Tin Emergency kits.

Best Combo IMHO: Spirit X with Explorer for Urban and Swisstool with 111mm Rucksack for the outdoors. Honorable mentions: Urban: Climber,Compact,Super Tinker,Deluxe Tinker,Alox Classic,Electrician,Pioneer,Pioneer X,Cadet,Rambler,Ambasador. - For the outdoors: Harvester,Farmer,2 handed Trecker or Forester (Rucksack is and works better overall.Newer models are only unnecessary more robust and much heavier, but don't work better,IMO same goes for the Rangergrip series). Huntsman and Fieldmaster are great for both Urban and the Outdoors. My top 5: Spirit X,Explorer,Rucksack,Alox Classic,Harvester. PS: Most SAK collectors are located in the USA, that's a fact!

That cuticle pusher is also very good to dig out earwax with if you have that problem.

Cadet or pioneer (no x) for me. Both alox, all the essentials and durable as hell.

The ball point pen? The straight pen? Changing out your "unused" tweezers for fire steel? Corkscrew tools?

I’ve carried a ‘classic’ on my keychain for over 30 years.

I use the secondary blade for opening packages or to cut something which is closed with tape. Because of tow reasons. 1 you can't destroy the thing in the package with the shorter blade. 2 the primary blade stays clean and don't gets stickie if you cut tape.

A 58mm in some form on key ring with a Firefly vs toothpick. Pocket a SAK w/saw & usually scissors, up to Champ. With Firefly or FireAnt & tinder. Live in rural earthquake area 18-25 mi to get home if possible. Great channel

The tinker is on my keychain all day every day. Along side a leatherman squirt ps4. Together it's everything I need.

They need to make an ALOX Tinker ffs. It's perfect, just I'm done with the chipping plastic scales and the custom metal scales are too pricey.

@@CaldoDeElote That's useful, but it does pretty much double the cost of the tool!

Having two blades on a Swiss Army knife means you can have one (larger) blade as a beater and keep and use the other super sharp. Cork sniffers hate the steel but it’s easy to sharp and was never designed to be your main tool. You’ll probably use your Swiss army ahead of your edc jewelleries.

4:46 "miniature pioneer X". I call it the cadet X and I've been dreaming of it since before the pioneer X itself came up... That gave me hope. And I'm still waiting for victorinox to make it :(

I think the romance of SAK's is greater than their reality. They're relatively heavy, inconvenient to carry and are almost always missing tools you want, while having ones you'll never use. I have a few and they just sit in my drawer. If they were (more) customizable, I think they'd make a lot more sense as EDC items. Thanks, for the detailed video.
