I'd refer to what Oda does as retroactive foreshadowing or Shrodinger's foreshadowing. He plants seeds in his story and then returns to them if the inspiration hits him. It's definitely more structured than Dragon Ball's "make it up as you go along" method of storytelling, but I'd also say it's much more spontaneous than people think it is.

Has sea stones come up again? I feel like it would make the non Devil Fruit users more relevant. Thereby creating a push and pull between those with DF and those without. It would have been cool to have variants of seastone, besides the hand cuffs and cages and boatlinings. Imagine a seastone whetstone so weapons can be imbued with its properties temporarily. I always thought that this concept was under utilized after the alibaster arc. I guess they were a Marine exclusive technology.

In regards to Mantra in Skypeia, I’ve always considered it to literally be observation Haki. But since Skypeia is a different region of the world, it’s history gave a different context to the name compared to the people on the ground. Kind of like how British people call the same things as us something completely different. Like an elevator vs a lift.

I don't think Oda planned it all along, One piece was originally intended to be much shorter than it is. I think it's a case of him rereading his story and realizing he had a lot o good elements he could get more use out of, shanks glare probably inspired conquerors haki, mantra clearly inspired observation haki, and he probably realized that Logia users were bs op so he made armament haki to combat them.

My counterpoint is that having Luffy having to find the one thing to be able to beat every Logia he faces would be pretty "convenient", and I know for a fact you would be the first one to point it out if that were the case today lol. "Oh, Luffy just happened to find x resource to beat x villain, how _Convenient_ ." I think that would get old if that's how One Piece operated today. It would boil down every fight to Luffy getting lucky, it was cool/funny the first couple of times, I think it ran its course.

Midichlorians ( I.E. genetics ) determined how easily you were able to commune with the Force to carry out your will meaning someone with a greater number of midichlorians was able to perform actions with greater ease ( less willpower ) then someone with less midichlorians. I would assume that Oda had a plan for at least Conqueror's Haki by the end of Water 7/Enies Lobby when Shanks arrives on the ship, as he uses it less like the trope of intimidation and more as some mysterious power. Observation Haki is not what lets people speak to creatures and write in poneglyphs, that's the "voice of all things". If it was haki, then way more characters would've heard Zunisha. I would also say that, knowing how Oda foreshadows, he probably wouldn't introduce mantra as some random power and just never touch on it again. The skypeians weren't genetically predisposed to haki (I think). It was just that the skill of observation haki had been known and taught in the sky. Sure, haki uses willpower, but learning is what allows you to utilize haki, not just willpower. The colors of armament haki haven't really been explained, but the best answer I've found is that only black blades like Shusui are actually black and all the other haki is clear. But, after the timeskip, Oda began to use black to signify the use of haki. The Ace vs. Blackbeard fight is weird, but in Oda's defense, part of the reason Ace took the punch was because he was drawn in by Teach's ability. Sure, haki users could make Ace's fruit irrelevant, but that doesn't mean they can actually get a punch on him.

I’m not Oda, but I feel like Crocodile’s story works with his world. Crocodile was a cocky youngster, but was wrecked by Whitebeard when he got to the New World. In desperation, he became a Shichibukai and returned to Paradise to not get destroyed by a bunch of high level Haki users. And I don’t think it’s much of a stretch for the man who would become pirate king barely beating him after losing twice.

When luffy first hit croc in the final round he thought he had haki check his dialogue before luffy mentions the blood... Ace like any decent logia user used base observation to sense where attacks were coming and use his logia df body to move around it. Blackbeard df is just op and Teach knows a thing or 2 about haki as he mentions it every time he meets luffy. Ace def had base armament and observation he was in the new world for 3yrs... Skypieans just have an affinity to mantra aka observation haki...Rayleigh mentions some people have advantages in certain areas of haki

Nope. Turns out that's just a general"you learned to use it" version. There is one that is like "Invisible armor", as Rayleigh put it, which we have seen in the series with Garp, the Boa's sisters, Sentomaru and the Admirals. Heck, when Rayleigh is explaining it, he shows it off with deflecting an elephant's attack by barely touching it. The Black Haki could just be for flash, but it's just the beginners version in a sense.

Its my personal theory that very basic armament is invisble and not particuarly strong and is what zoro used on alabasta and what most of the kuga pirates use and then you can either train it in two different way ls the black vulcanization or the stuff sentomaru uses. Oda has planned some things greatly in advance but I think he is most skilled at incorporating previous story elements into whatever is currently going and I strongly believe Haki while not being the most seamless example is an example of this. I always taught armourment haki not being visible pre-timeskip was because it had not been formally introduced to the readers even when Oda had to decided to make it a thing

I think Haki was explained more as the characters we follow learned about it too. The early examples of it are when the Straw Hat's (or when it was just Luffy) are unaware Haki even exists. They weren't even strong enough to use it at the time either, which could make it harder to perceive. As for the Mantra thing, its explained more recently, but Haki use is influenced by culture. The former Yakuza boss explains its use in Wano compared to the rest of the world. It makes sense Skypiea had its own Haki culture.

@@ReddTurtl That's not how a retcon works. In Skypeia Mantra was intiduced but further on in the story it is than explained that it is also called Observation Haki in the Blue Sea. That's an example of expansion of a concept one introduced. It is completely believable for a seperate society like Skypeia that had it's own isolated culture and words never used in the Blue Sea to mean different things. So when we learn of the true value of the ability it makes more sense and has a better foundation to draw upon. Tbh that's a good way to setup a concept you want to use down the line and Oda could do that specifically because of how Skypeia works in the world of OP.

Haki has one additional advantage you didn't mention. Because one of the themes of One Piece is the importance of willpower and not giving up and Haki is the literal manifestation of one's willpower it gives weaker characters like Coby and Usopp a moment to shine.

I think the reason luffy could hear the sea kings and Momonosuke could hear the gigant elephant was not observation haki but rather "the voice of all things". I dont think they are the same. But what do I know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Regarding observation haki that I found weird with Katakuri (and now Luffy) is that they can see the future with it, but when we learned about haki (and mantra) both that ball dude and Boa sisters also "saw the future"? They know that luffy will kick from left or whatever. Is future observation just that they see longer ? Like 5 sec insted of 1 sec? Bit unclear IMO. Man the pre time skip logia fights was lit. Normal observations haki is instictive movment out of the way of an attack simular to spider swnces or ultra instinct. Future sigh allows you to actually se glimpses into the future which allows you to do things like prevent an attack in the first place from happening or warn someone else of an attack

Haki was developed over the coarse the story and refined to a usable system as the characters in the story learn about it and Oda develops it over a couple years. the idea was planted quite early and naturally with Shanks at whitebeard's, Mantra and Zoro vs Daz bones. As unexplained phenomenon that followed a pattern of sensing shit, empowering shit, and taming/knocking out shit in with different usage I fail to see how haki is a retcon at all. still a good video nuff said.

You've made a lot of fair points, to me it always seemed like something like haki was a natural step, because there had to be a explanation about why characters like mihawk were so revered even though people supposedly could just slip through his sword swings, but these are fair criticisms, it's introduction could've certainly been handled better

Honestly I wouldn't mind One Piece continuing forever. The world itself is so interesting. We don't necessarily need Luffy and Co to enjoy OP.

It's been heavily implied multiple times by major characters that Luffy has already traded a ton of his lifespan for what he's achieved and overcome, so he'll likely die one way or another shortly after achieving his goal, much like Roger did. He's also remarkably asexual so we won't be seeing any Boruto-style sequels. And I think that's good. I'd rather have Oda finish it as soon as is reasonable and come up with something new and similarly good than milk One Piece until it's garbage.

@@moozooh The world of One Piece feels like a universe that could go on forever. I wouldn't mind subsequent spin offs. The story of The Straw Hat Pirates should have a definitive conclusion and merely be set dressing for later stories similar to Roger.

@@GabeSweetMan If the One Piece universe is to be explored further, I would much prefer something done to it by a different author like what Urasawa did with Pluto for the Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy) universe. It both fits in naturally and elevates the established narrative with a unique and self-contained story told from a different perspective to a different audience. This is a most excellent way to execute a spin-off. Otherwise, a new fully-fledged universe beats a spin-off any day.

You mentioned this in the Po D. Cast as well but I really dont understand where you're getting this "clear Haki" thing from. You can see it clearly (lel) when Hyogoro, grandpa yakuza, goes "and this is how you do it... BAAM" and we get a panel of the (non)impact at the end of ch939, with his hand clearly colored black. The schtick of this new tier of Haki is gonna be "no contact", no need to add the "clear color" as well, which would only make things more confusing. Not to mention that this perfectly tracks with your opinion that Oda came up with Haki only later. As to how it works, I'm gonna make a wild GUESS: On page 939, right before the last panel, we see grandpa's face and arm and they're ALL black (yeah there are some white highlights but this is a manga, he cant just color his face solid black, he needs to make features stand out). But then in the last panel we see the black Armament stopping at his elbow. So I think this new level of Haki is gonna consist of the user going into fullbody hardboy armament, and then quickly concentrating all that Armament into a specific body part, in this case a fist. It could even be that the action needs to be performed in really fast succession in order to succeed, so Oda could retroactively cover his own ass over Luffy not noticing the black colour with Sentoumaru and Garp because he was still too much of a noob and couldn't notice it yet, or some bullshit like that.

Yeah one piece is very different from how it started. It even shows in the artstyle. Its 20! Its an old series! Its gonna happen! Oda had a grand plan in mind but the specifics of that plan couldn't have been planned out any better than it has been. I love one piece!!!!

As much as I agree to the fact that Haki patched the whole series (and fights like Magellan were extremely tense), without it the fight would turned out too convenient. Just think about Kizaru: we would have to either use mirrors or complete darkness.

Black Beards Logia clearly has different properties than normal logia's Im pretty sure he can't phase through attacks so ace wouldn't have needed haki to hit him.

Speaking of things redconed into the story, the Minks!, I don’t think any one was out here questioning humanoid animals like bepo, it just came of as classic oda “fuck it I’m put a catman on Basil Hawkins crew” one piece character design shit. Even if it was semi planned these types of characters only start to show up around sabodey+, and also everybody has always freaked at what Chopper is, wouldn’t someone of assumed he was just a mink at least once by now??.

As someone who’s been binge consuming One Piece for the last couple weeks it’s weird that I don’t feel as though it’s been retconed as much as you do. Perhaps simply due to the information overload but I thought the little sprinkles of pre Shanondy Haki were always mysterious to me ie. Skypiea and post Enies Lobby. Although the fact that Ace couldn’t use Haki at all throughout the series despite being on Wano and explored the New World is very weirdchamp. Like maybe one could say he didn’t have the proper Haki training but I don’t know

Oda for sure had concept of Haki from around Skypeia, but it wasn't developped enough, so to justify the plot holes from underdevelopment, retconned some explanations. I'm certain Ace hadn't learned haki, and haki doesn't guarantee a hit on a logia - Whitebeard vs Aokiji; or other weird intangible powers: start of Luffy vs Katakuri

I think the different names for the same abilities could just be regional differences. I don't think mantra (the skypian word for observation haki) is linked to genetics but is rather just a generally known technique in the area. If haki is something any character can do, it's absence is probably due to people not knowing about it in that area. Mantra came off as a cultural staple of the skypians, so they would probably all be practicing it from an early age.

this is the equivalent of correcting someone's grammar in the comment section, but i feel like you deserve to know. caribou's name in kana is "カリブー", so we have the ok to call him "karibu". you may have already know this and it's a habit that you slip on cause everyone does it, and if that's the case then oh well, oops. July 17, 2000 the novelisation of the Loguetown Arc came out , in the book there was a couple cut scenes "One of those scenes was about a fortune teller reading Luffy's palm and telling him he had 覇王の相, which translates, roughly, to 'aspect of the conqueror'. CoC, by the way, is written 覇王色の覇気, with '覇気' being haki, 'の' meaning something like 'of', and '色' meaning color, so the use of '覇王' in both hardly seems coincidental." This is the earliest mention of the power I can think in an overt way , some people say it's eluded to when Luffy Punches Crocodile and he says something along the lines of "HE couldn't have!" before he realises he'd used his own blood

It could have been fixed, by implying Armament only work in new world due to some natural causes. It wouldn't have hampered previous narration much and can ad alot in story development.
