I would say the スパ thing is actually more than what you describe here. I'm sure he wanted to be ambiguous too, but more importantly, think of the way the onomatopoeia works: the ス is the sound of the blade moving through something, while the パ is the sound of the blade stopping against something. By having just the ス, the implication is that the blades are sliding back into his hand, keeping the mystery of what his powers are while also having a sound effect that makes sense.

As a chef, when I first heard the sound effect used in the anime my first and immediate thought was that it sounded like someone dicing food very quickly in an echo-y (dramatic) room. I'd say it worked too.

That's just because they didn't use the sound effect they should have, they could have used the sound of a blade being unsheathed or some kind of metalic sound. While i do love manga, the sound effects they use are a crutch due to lack of sound, that's one of the strong points of anime, it has sound, this is just an example of bad sound design not a problem intrinsic to anime (it should be the other way around, it should be easier to convey sound with actual sound than onomatopeya)

@John Ford Yes, the first arc (around 50 chapters or so) is very different from everything that comes after. The art obviously gets way way better as it goes along as with most long running series, but so does just about everything else as well, especially in regards to plot and character development. It might sound like a lot of work just to figure out if you like something, but I'd say 120 chapters (out of the current 600 so it's really not that much) is where you actually get an idea of what it's gonna be like. I'm mostly recommending it because the Kingdom subreddit gets a lot of bleedover from the OP one, seems like there's a fair bit of crossover appeal between the series.

TLDR BGE has a nerdgasm for sound effects written down. Implying actual sound effects are inferior. Then uses an example where the audio is garbage. If they knew the power, they should have simply had the sound of a sheathing blade.

Oda likes to use onomatopoeia in creative ways all the time! In one scene between zoro and sanji sanji says he's gonna put razorblades in zoro's food. Then later on zoro is eating his box and the other characters have onomatopoeia that is like "munch munch" where zoro has one that is more like "Crunch crunch" the sound of razor blades getting crunched, but he keeps eating on, with nary a care in the world. I believe this happens in chapter 653

Renato Valdivia This arc has a lot of parts going off at once and lots of branches from earlier on in the story like Giran and the Doctor only coming back up after 100-200 chapters. As much as I like reading weekly I’d say wait until the climax of Shigiraki and Destro happens because it’s so much information being brought up in intervals that I would wait for a reread. There’s also good catch up threads on Reddit too with all the small details.

Pretty interesting shit Nate. I really wish it were easier to get my hands on RAW scans so I could check out stuff like this, but apparently Japanese people dont pirate mango... ? I mean, there is the occasional site with scans, but no centralized resource like we have for mangadex or kissmanga. Maybe manga is so dirt cheap over there that they dotn even bother. Or maybe manga companies go full on copyright nazi on anybody attempting to scan their shit Funnily enough, I just got done with a chapter in my JP textbook dealing with Onomatopoeias, and Osamu Tedzuka who first used them in Manga.

Just read 22nd volume of Berserk and 94th chapter of One Piece. Luffy rising from destroyed Arlong Park was pretty cool, even if not something exclusive to manga format. Guts' battle with Zodd was a fucking mess, but in a way that felt actually not so bad. Both those hunks of meat were moving so fast to that smith boy, that we could say this messiness is just his perspective. And this mess, this particular type of mess is something that could only happen in a comic. I'm pretty sure the real reason for why it can be so confusing is just Miura forgetting that what makes sense in his head doesn't have to make sense on the actual page, but author is dead, yada yada, end result can be pretty interesting to think about.
