Like Luffy told Moria all the way back in Thriller Bark "Rubber always bounces back." But real people aren't made of rubber. The toughest dudes out there are basically mochi; tough, flexible, and stretchy but they'll break eventually. 10/10 video, Katakuri a great antagonist, better than Rob Lucci
@RonquixoteDIII6 жыл бұрын
Beatmaster971 tbh I think Rob Lucci is kind of overrated. He's a punch clock kind of villain and though he has good traits and doesn't waste time his personality lags behind others like arlong, crocodile, eneru, moriah and doflamingo. I'm not one to think he's terrible like some others but he works more as a roadblock than a character.
@Beatmaster9716 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call him overrated necessarily but I see what you mean about his personality. He's almost a punch clock villain but he was really excited for his second round against Luffy if I'm remembering correctly. But he definitely was more of a roadblock than a character

Katakuri is so relatable as a character. He is a man of exquisite contradictions. On the one hand he is the perfect ideal fighter filled with praises, while on the other hand he is a big-mouthed goofball in his private time. He was forced to meet this ridiculous expectation since the years of childhood. The most badass trait he has is that he never cared about other opinions of his "pelican eel" look. The very reason he decided to hide it is for the sake of his sister and family at large. I don't consider him a villain per se, but a well written antagonist.

The arc was bloody brilliant. Two families in conflict, Charlotte vs Straw hats, one a family of blood, the other a group of friends. Yet, the straw hat are far more a family than Big Moms family could ever be. And it all makes sense, it all ties beautifully in Big Moms shallow ideas and hypocricy. Under her, her family could only become what it is, a hierarchy of practically strangers that are constantly a threat to eachother, and at the top stands Katakuri. Seen as invincible, admired, his greatest fear being a show of weakness. And when that fear gets realized, the sister that admired him most dropped him like a hot potato. Opposed to them are the straw hats, a true family, that has seen eachother fall time and time again, loving, supporting, and trusting each other in a way that the Charlottes never could. Oda is a fucking genius.
@CuulG6 жыл бұрын
thats why we put the g before oda man
@SunsetSullivan6 жыл бұрын
At the same time, the Charlotte's do have good men and women among them- Pudding and Katakuri, for example, who are both struggle with physical, outward appearances. Both are beautiful in their own ways, from Puddings girlish charm and lovely body to Katakuri's manly jawline and rugged abs, yet both are marred by deformities that they wish to hide away, that being Puddings' eye and Katakuri's mouth. And yet, by the end of the arc, each has found a person who truly loves them for who they are, even knowing the truth. Pudding has found Sanji, who honestly feels that her third eye is beautiful. Katakuri has found Luffy, who, despite being his enemy, refuses to mock Katakuri for how he looks and treats him like an equal. I think the part that really got to me was in Chapter 902, when Brulee tends to his wounds. The way that she looks at him makes her look genuinely pretty for even just a moment, because in that one second she sees not a tough, battle hardened vanguard, but her own big brother, who fought tooth and nail to protect what matters to him. The smile she gives looks so pure and kind that it's almost startling to see from such a comically vile character like Brulee. It reminds me of a Road Dhal quote: "If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until you can hardly bear to look at it. A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely."

To everyone who's like "Katakuri should've won anyway because he's stronger", they don't get Katakuri as a character.
@trailblaze716 жыл бұрын
This fight was a masterpiece because of the clash of different values and ideologies. Katakuri is someone who changed himself so that he can be accepted by society but in contrast Luffy is someone who changes society to fit his character. It’s because of this reason that Katakuri has the utmost respect for Luffy because it reminds him of something he once was hence why he kept pushing him to get up every time he fell; because he wanted Luffy to surpass him and his ideals. If we (most likely) see Katakuri in the future, he won’t be wearing the scarf to hide himself anymore to show that he too has surpassed his limits, grew as a character and learned from his fight with Luffy. Katakuri is such a well written masterpiece of a character that only Oda can make and definitely the best OP villain of all time.

Katakuri stabbing himself to make the fight even isn't just shonen bullshit. Katakuri needed to know that he could beat Luffy in a fair fight. He sees himself as the protector of his family. And with a weaker opponent, it doesn't matter if he gets help because everyone knows that he could do it alone. But by this point Katakuri was uncertain if he could win on his own. So when Flampe helps him, it's not just shonen pride, he no longer is certain that he can win on his own. What will he do if he's alone? What will he do if everyone else is knocked out? He's the protector of his family. Big Mom isn't that concerned with any one of their safety as long as it doesn't affect her goals. So he has to make the fight even to reaffirm that he can win. It's not just about honor or pride, it's about him knowing that he's strong enough to protect against any threat.

When Mochi is beaten down, it doesn't bounce back into shape unless it's remolded by an outside force. Rubber does. Katakuri desperately hides his imperfections because they'll irreparably scar his status and reputation. But Luffy fails and bounces back so his reputation grows IN SPITE of his imperfections. _That_ is what Katakuri respected so deeply

Their last scene together honestly says it all how much Katakuri respects Luffy. After their long and exhausting fight Luffy musters whatever strength he has to get up, Katakuri sees it and stands before him. Asking wether after all that, he's still gonna come back and fight her mother. Luffy, without a doubt declares that he will, because he's going to become the pirate king. And Katakuri *completely believes him* and purposefully falls on his back. Sign him up for the Luffy fanclub, cuz the boi earned it.

it's also about how luffy learns from his antagonists. from crocodile, he learned he has to be smart if he wants to make it in the grand line. from lucci, he learns that he needs to always be searching for new ways to become stronger. from doffy, the big thing he learns is that following someone's plan and taking it seriously is very important because you never know what obstacles could come against you (which he learns the hard way by not following law's plan). from katakuri, he learns respect and mental discipline. he learns that he should never underestimate anyone and anyways keep in your toes. after the fight, you see a change in luffy. whenever he fights, he doesn't do his old "i'm gonna kick ur ass!" stuff. he says a few seemingly out of character lines, such as after he loses his vivre card, he immediately forgives himself because he knows he needs to move forward. when the snipers come, he IMMEDIATELY attacks them. this shows that he is now always prepared to foil an enemy like katakuri did with gear fourth the first time. i dare say he learned that aspect from katakuri. he asks "who the hell are you?" which seems out of character because usually luffy is not one for questioning things. my point is, after the fight, luffy has learned that he really needs to take control if these situations as quickly as possible, which he does. now, he isn't holding his crew down by being selfish and reckless when he fights. i think sanji learned that too, since now he feels the need to make it up to his crew for all they went through to save him.

Ever since I saw these videos, I wanted to watch this for a year, but I was just too slow on the manga and wanted to experience all this first myself.. Now that I'm caught up, all I can say is, I'm happy One Piece exists and this is one fantastic video. Even if it took a year, I'm glad I waited, spot on about Katakuri's character development. These moment to moment characterizations in One Piece that leave a dense mark and air of presence for these characters, it's really something else, this is the real shit where you get pumped up both physically and emotionally and get sucked into a fight.. It's all about the characters in the end, the fact that we care so much for Katakuri as well, if not more so in this situation and the promise, was an excellent closing.. I am still fucking pumped, I just finished reading all that.. Also, much respect to Pedro, one of the most unexpected moments in One Piece, at first didn't know what to expect from him, then Oda showed his stuff and he was a dynamite throwing swashbuckling lad. How, Fucking, COOL, IS THAT! I don't think we've ever seen in One Piece an actual guerilla fighter like this! I love it. I Just Love One Piece.

This video was amazing.. He isn't the best character in the show but he is one of the best villains and the way you described him was beautiful thank you so much for following up on your video
