I often say, “Exercise #4 - Right / Left Turns From A Stop” has the highest failure rate of any exercise on my practice course. This is why we don’t start with it. We start with the foundation. “Smooth, Short Starts and Stops”, “The Slow Ride” & “Trust & Believe!©️”. If you want anything or any relationship to be strong, you must start with a strong foundation! I know it’s tempting to just jump on your motorcycle and ride, and I know we take a lot for granted when it comes to motorcycle riding… It’s more important than you think to practice slow speed maneuvers on your motorcycle. Do this for me please… Set up this exercise. The gate is 5’ wide and the lane you’re turning into is 7.5’. Do it with your motorcycle straight up and down. No lean at all and keep your feet on the footboards or pegs. This applies to ALL MOTORCYCLE TYPES. If you can do it consistently, that’s great! Put that in the comment section. If you can’t do it consistently, put that in the comment section as well. Let’s talk about it. You may think the place to start practicing it is at this exercise, but it’s not. Go back to the foundational exercises. Trust me it will be easier to absorb and apply the necessary techniques to do this CONSISTENTLY! Break out of the mold of the average motorcycle rider! It’s not about being the BEST… It’s about being the BOSS! Preload!!! And Keep It Loaded!!!! © kzbin.info

13:30 - I love that!!! "Stop saying sorry." We must get over the natural, instinctive habit of verbally and mentally beating ourselves up. There's a difference between acknowledging our weaknesses (we ALL have them) and working on them versus being down on ourselves and beating ourselves up. One path works THROUGH and OVERCOMES the challenge, and the other festers on the obstacle. Great stuff Rob!!!!

I watch these videos and try practicing at least in my every day riding, I ride to work and where I park its sloped so I turn and back the bike in, will try this more, so lined up better and not so far to back the bike. I have been doing the smooth stops or practicing them since I have several 4 way stops to get home.

Been practicing for a few years and have it down to a 5’ into 5’. This 5’ into 7 1/2’ is one of the most relevant and “real world” exercises and should be practiced frequently by every rider.

So much of this seems to come natural like going into the friction zone But I just came in around a little practice and I realized every situation is different right foot left foot? I found my right foot was constantly covering rear brake left foot on the ground up until I am in entering the friction zone.

My biggest challenge is uneven surface. pull up to an intersection and there are rita from busses, 18-wheelers and just common path traffic. Driveway has bumps and dips where i turn 90 degrees into the garage. You worked/rode in NYC, not perfect roads and streets that’s for sure. Did/do you conquer this with just shear strength? or how?

I have a voyager as well. Even with the Ivan’s tune on it, it’s such a pig at slow speeds. I’m wondering if a better clutch would help? It seems to have too little grab too late. With the geometry it has, it tends to want to fall over like it did for the rider in the video.
