Seriously. Watched tons of videos on riding. Thanks for making me go to a parking lot to practice this stuff. I mastered the 3MPH full circles with the wheel locked all the way in. Both directions. Best tip for new riders, the back brake is essential at low speed so you don’t dump your bike over and brake your foot/ankle. These are the best videos for new riders. For real.

Thanks again Jerry! Your videos are so helpful. I live in Maine and recently moved from a Suzuki M50 to a 2013 Honda Goldwing 1800. I am practicing in a parking lot at the school, we don't have many motorcycle schools in my rural setting. I was struggling with low speed turns and once I started working and learning the "friction zone" as you suggested I feel more confident and in control. Also the straight line exercise is a great hint for improving slow speed control. Grateful for your mentoring, best wishes!

Hi Jerry. Question about this. You've discussed hydraulic clutches vs cable. I have found that my friction zone is very small. I'd say 1/4 to 1/2 in range. With hydraulic clutches, can that be adjusted to have a little more area in my friction zone? I might be incorrect in my numbers but I didn't actually take a measuring tape to it
@motorman85711 ай бұрын
You can't adjust a hydraulic clutch. But if you have a Harley touring bike, go to softbrake.com and get one of his clutch levers. Your clutch will then grab at the exact spot it should.

I came up with a technique to teach someone to drive a manual car. Take them to a parking lot or low traffic area. Find an incline or small hill and have them use the gas and clutch to hold the car perfectly still on the hill, inch forward a bit, roll back a bit, stop, etc without touching the brake. Once they learn to hold the "Delicate Balance," they basically know how to drive stick.
@rcnelson5 ай бұрын
It was mandatory for all my children to learn to drive a stickshift, and they all took their driving exams in a stickshift car and passed. But not until the last kid did I figure out the easy way to teach the procedure. Find an untraveled, flat road. Have the child completely ignore the throttle and with the engine at idle, very slowly let the clutch out.(The engine won't die.) Not having to manipulate clutch and throttle at the same time eliminates the big bugaboo of driving manual transmissions. Still idling along, have the learner gradually give the car throttle, then let off the throttle, depress the clutch pedal, and shift into second and so on. This approach worked so well I kick myself for not teaching this earlier, or being taught that way myself way back when.
@RecipeForMayhem11 ай бұрын
When I was learning to drive a manual trans car, I was told not to "ride the clutch". Essentially what you are teaching here. Are MC clutches more robust than car clutches to handle riding the sweet spot for extended periods of time? Thanks for taking the time to make your vids.
@motorman85711 ай бұрын
Cars have dry clutches. 95% of motorcycles have wet clutches that are bathed in oil to keep them cool. There are 2 ways to manuever a motorcycle at low speeds. Use the clutch and throttle or duck walk the bike. BUT, if you duck walk the bike, you still have to use the friction zone and if your making a u-turn for instance, you will spend more time using the friction zone to complete a u-turn duck walking than if you keep your feet on the pegs or floor boards and just whip that bike around at 8 or 10 MPH VS duck walking at 1 mph.

Since the friction zone is needed on a motorcycle to keep the bike up at low speeds, the designers cooled the clutch with oil. Can you still burn out a wet clutch? Yes, but ya gotta be a real dofuss.

Motorman....well, having never done it before....you encouraged me. However, this is what I found out for me. The clutch friction point turned out be somewhat confusing to me. I didn't even fool with the throttle. I've got a road King, and found a big parking lot. Here's what worked for me. I just got the cycle rolling at idle speed. Started rolling , making wider turns at first. It didnt take long before I was making full turns and figure 8's with no brake, no clutch, no throttle. I went a little faster and only used the clutch and slight brake to slow me down slightly. Then when the turn first started, let the clutch out fully and made the turn easy peasy. I did it for a couple hours, and will continue to practice from time to time. I could see if I was going to do the tight cone thing that the friction zone would be utilized, but, I'm not interested in cones at all. I can now do sharp turns, u turns and figure 8's comfortably, and smoothly..no biggy...I'm a happy camper. I'd have to say that momentum is more important than power. I haven't tried this yet, but I think as long as I got the bike moving....I could turn it off and make the turns just fine ! Thanks for all the help and encouragement .
@motorman8578 ай бұрын
You must master the friction zone (clutch/throttle) to be a skilled rider. THERE ARE NO SHORT CUTS TO THAT. If you have the clutch fully engaged you are not fully in control at low speeds. The more you practice the wrong technique, the better you'll get at doing it wrong.
