Hello KZbinrs! A special hello to my fellow PRELOADERS! For those of you that aren't PRELOADERS yet, hit that subscribe button and become one. You may be asking yourself, who are PRELOADERS?
PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
What does PRELOAD mean?
PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.
Welcome to Practice Session #8.1! This video covers 8 exercises and 1 bonus exercise to practice which will help improve your confidence, which in turn will make you a safer motorcycle rider.
Tom and I had a great time and was blessed with great weather. This video was recorded on Tuesday, January 20, 2020 and was the first practice session ever held at night but it had to be done! I couldn’t let Tom ride 1,000 miles back to Texas without doing what he rode here exclusively to do. So if you want to check out Tom practicing in the first night practice session ever and well on his way to becoming the BOSS of his motorcycle, get a snack and come on in!

Wow! Tom is a motivating example of persistence. No quit in that man. And thanks, Robert for keeping it real and showing the “mistakes”. When you practice hard you will make mistakes and that’s how you improve. Tom may have dropped it a few times but now he is a better rider than the guy who has ridden for 20+years and never dropped his motor. Pushing yourself hard in practice with drops will result in much better road skills and a better chance of no drops when you aren’t practicing.

I watched the entire video..."awesome"... I noticed that after Tom did several left side U turns, he would go past you and do a turn around to come back to you and they looked GOOD in about a 24' (3 parking spaces).. So maybe he needs to practice in the 3 space distance more times than go down to the 2 space (18') space. But, regardless it was a GREAT practicing experience for him...me as well...Like you said at the end of the video TOM is a real standup guy...God bless him and bless him with a safe ride back home...

Robert...thank you for the persistent explanations for the benefit of us preloaders. Dip and lean...folks consistently struggle with that technique (including me). Can you describe more often (over and over) while people are practicing, what we need to do to counter that bad feeling, how to perform that lean, and how to be successful? Tom has more experience than most and he had to work hard to master this. The extra help will definitely help those of us practicing without being there with you. I am sure seeing/hearing how important the clutch/throttle/speed/lean/look is an important combination. I am not sure that I would like to fall over as often as Tom is brave enough to do. Two questions 1) is there an exercise we can do that practices the lean? I think we may all have different ideas of “lean” 2) how much physical manhandling are the preloaders doing? Thank you for doing all this wondering knowledge sharing.
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Dallas. It’s my pleasure. What I will say is that bad feeling, at least for me, never really goes away completely. However, the severity of it dissipates and that comes from practicing mastering the friction zone along with incorporating the rear brake. Most importantly, you MUST learn to TRUST and BELIEVE that as long as you provide sufficient power to the rear wheel, the motorcycle WILL NOT fall. This is why I believe Exercise #2 & Exercise #3 are so important because as soon as it feels like you’re going to fall, because you’re already Preloaded, just open the clutch into the friction zone and you will feel the motorcycle pick itself up. This is vital to getting over that “bad feeling”. The bad feeling goes away when you KNOW that all you have to do is open your left hand a little and the motorcycle won’t fall. 👍🏾
@dallasw1143
@dallasw1143 4 жыл бұрын
@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle Thank you for the explanation. One more question, it relates to "lean" technique needed in some exercises. Exercise 2 & 3 are turning the handlebars, what technique(s) do we use to "lean" the motorcycle? It looks like we ALL struggle with the "lean" and maybe need some more understanding. At lease, I would like to know more. Thank you again!
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle 4 жыл бұрын
@@dallasw1143 simply put, once you learn to trust and believe, you literally push the motorcycle into a lean. You’re literally letting the motorcycle fall to the side that you need it to lean, but it won’t fall over as long as there’s power to the rear wheel. So while the motorcycle is leaning, the only thing keeping it from falling is sufficient power going to the rear wheel and that’s attained by staying in the friction zone while also using a little rear brake simultaneously.

Stand up guy right there! Two things I hope you can comment on (if you did, sorry I missed it) - 1 is body positioning on slow turns. Lean vs. not lean and head location. 2nd is - I noticed in your overhead shot, you're reach to handle bars seem much closer to your body, so your turns you're not really "stretching". I don't have ape's (2018 street glide) but I feel like I have to really stretch to reach outside handle bar doing tight turns - like almost have to lunge forward a bit -- I don't know that's correct or if I need to adjust my handlebars back towards me. Basically, if I make a left turn, my right arm reach is really stretched out. I'm not doing 18' uturns lol. I'm practicing and following you. LOL. Any input is helpful.
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Darlynn. Thanks! So regarding body lean, I’ve found that it depends on the rider and the bike. Some people counter lean and some people (myself included) don’t. I don’t find it necessary during slow speed riding. Regarding the handlebars, if moving up on your seat doesn’t solve the problem, I would have your bars adjusted closer to you. I’ve experienced doing 17’ u-turns with 16” Apes and it does feel a little concerning when you have to fully extend your arm to make a turn. Especially when it’s the clutch hand.
