Great idea! I still have my first machine too. Husband gave it to me for our first Christmas back in 1978. It’s a Kenmore and a real workhorse. I have 9 machines in total - from a hand crank to a treadle to the Kenmore and up to my computerized Janome. Each has its own personality, I swear :)

Thanks for the video, Beth. I too sew batting scraps together. I use my thread stash and bobbin stash that are close to running out when joining the batting. I also use old thread spools that I’ve accumulated over the years. The batting is hidden in the quilt, so no one knows the batting is sewn together with different colored threads. And I love getting a spool of thread down to nothing. 😊

I've got one of those indestructible Slant-o-matics too, and I love it. Mine is straight stitch only, however. I join pieces of batting by hand with herringbone stitches several inches long. To get matching straight edges, overlap the edges of the two pieces as much as necessary and cut down through both of them - perfect match.

( I call it Frankenbatting!) A great foot to use on newer machines is an edge stitch or joining foot. It works like Moses parting the Red Sea of batting keeping the zigzag perfectly centered as it the edges have a tendency to spread. For those with a serger, a 2 thread flatlock works great too...it allows you to both trim uneven edges of joined batting and then open it up and have it lay flat.

I am so lazy i spraybaste little bits and bobs to the back of the topquilt but this way you could actually store your franken-batting. My problem is that my sewing is so all over the place I really can't pre-prepare my scraps because who knows where they will end up! My "loose" batting gets jammed on top of my full bags and I try to use it in order of smallest to biggest to save my biggest stuff for the largest projects where it might matter whether it's queen or a certain size.

I have been doing this for a while, but I always wonder if the seams come apart when the quilt is washed. Most of my quilts are donations, so I can't ask the person who gets it. I sometimes use Heat Press seam tape, too. Thanks for your videos. They inspire me to do something with scraps that I never thought of.
