I wouldn't worry about the slight overhang, they're just 20 gallons, and the bottom rims of the tanks are well glued in with those plastic edges. If you're going to have soft water, best to use soft water plants, as hard water plants generally don't adapt well to soft water. Since you're using substrate, go with substrate feeders. It's also a good idea to cap the soil with and inch or more of sand so the nutrients don't escape (unless you're doing water column feeders). It might be difficult using such soft water without fertilizer and co2 injection, since you're not able to get co2 from decomposition with a deep substrate setup (of course some plants are more survivalist than others), and you'll definitely need kh if you go that route, as the kh helps greatly to buffer any excess co2. Since bettas like top cover, floating plants or plants that grow all the way to the top of the tank and become emergent might be the best option, as they can get all the carbon they need from the air.
@GeekyGeckoCreations3 жыл бұрын
such pretty and unique fish didnt know there were so many species! :D
@deadfred8213 жыл бұрын
For your overhang, I’d grab a sheet of plywood just long enough to cover both tanks outlines, paint it with glossy coats & place it under both tanks. Matching the color can blend it while contrasting can give a little accent. Painting one side black & the other side another color could give you the opportunity to test which looks better. Of course; you’d want to do this before filling the tanks with water…😅

Worked out fine for a year, now I'm dealing with algea for the first time.

No kh in your tank is very risky. Not only is there a danger of large ph swings due to photosynthesis if you have a lot of plants, but if you use a co2 injection, you'll poison your fish because there's no kh to absorb and buffer the co2. "Alkalinity also represents a carbon reservoir for plants. Alkalinity has been likened to a 'bicarbonate battery' that stores co2. During the day, plants draw on the battery and deplete the water of bicarbonates [which causes ph spikes in water with particularly low alkalinity], Alkalinity goes down. At night, though, the 'battery' is recharged with fresh co2 from the respiration of plants, fish, and bacteria. Alkalinity goes back up." - Ecology of the Planted Aquarium, Diana Walstad. I've heard Bettas can do quite well in hard water, especially because many of them are bred in hard water and sold to aquarists, and so these bettas are quite well adapted to it. Even soft water plants tend to do better in hard water aquariums because of the added mineral content, despite the fact that many cannot process bicarbonates (likely, soft water plants predominately live in soft water in nature because they get out-competed in hard water by hard water plants which are better adapted to processing bicarbonates in place of co2). I use muratic acid to bring down my ph. Despite the fact that my water is hard, is has a bit less kh than I'd like, so I add seachem neutral regulator, which may only slightly soften the water but increases the kh a good bit. It also slightly increases the ph to around 8-ish ('neutral' my ass), but I add 4 drops per gallon of acid and that brings it back down. The carbonates and bicarbonates will absorb some of the hydrogen, so you may need to add a bit more after it sets for a while, but you can eventually stabilize your tank once you've figured out how much acid to add with your top-offs and water changes. Muratic acid has been used in the aquarium hobby, particually for discus, for a while. It's perfectly fine, and very cheap. You can likely get a gallon at your local home improvement store. It's often sold as a concrete etcher, since it breaks down the concrete by reacting with the lime (which is why muratic acid is also the best chemical to use to remove hard water stains).

To help out with the fungus try cherry shrimp. Killifish breeders use them to eat the fungus off eggs.
@SimplyBetta3 жыл бұрын
Oh that's a good idea, though the cherry shrimp wouldn't tolerate the acidic water conditions. Maybe caridina shrimp!

@@SimplyBetta i have my cherry shrimp in 6.5 ph water they can go lower to 6.2. I learned this from killifish breeding. There is another method too. Make sure you drip acclimate the shrimp first.

@@SimplyBetta try this as well if you are going to tumble the eggs again. www.amazon.com/dp/B00025646W/ref=cm_sw_r_u_apa_glc_fabc_XCDCQ4XZHFZDQ8RYV63Y?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

@Simply Betta , hi! I was just wondering how many female bettas I can have in a 40 breeder with about 10-15 rummy nose and about 5-6 corys. Thanks!
@dragon6irl3 жыл бұрын
I would do about 9. Too few and they never stop fighting. The thing I've learned with sororities though is if it goes south you need to have a plan on how to separate all of them.

Hi Taylor, hello from London, England, I just wanted to say that I love your your videos... you are so funny and expressive,... like your hair algae video it was hilarious and really had me chuckling... you should so be a comedy actor. Thanks for making the fun and formative videos... did you sell your house and move yet or are you still in that process as I’m looking forward to seeing you build the new fish room!

Why so crazy Taylor? Altho we love it when you get crazy, you know guys eat a lot! We get hungry! I'm retired, but when married, I was like "Shari, make me a sandwich please! I said please- plus, if you don't I'll eat our children". See? Normal behavior. Be well :)

Are those Ikea shelves strong enough to hold your tanks? I have a 25 gallon and those exact shelves but I'm too scared to put it on there.
@SimplyBetta3 жыл бұрын
I would bet money that yes, it is plenty strong enough. This ike shelf has like 4 evenly-spaced vertical supports and it's pretty heavy duty particleboard, more than the manufactured tanks stands you can get at petco. That being said, I'm not an engineer or anything maybe I'm totally wrong!
@Chriss_Fishes3 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't necessarily be pretty, but putting a piece of plywood underneath the tanks would help spread out the weight across the shelf.
@SimplyBetta3 жыл бұрын
Yeah a few people have suggested that - maybe when I'm near a home depot next and I can just lazily order a piece!

Grab a board the right size and put it under the tanks
