Hi Seth, I loved the review of this shoe. I was never really into NB as a sports shoe. I was recently on a trip to London 🇬🇧 where we walked around 18km a day through the city and parks. Big mistake I took casual sneakers 🤦🏻‍♂️ my feet where aching. The next day I was on a main street and passed a NB shop, I immediately thought about your review…I tried them on and it was love at first sight they felt like slippers. I also tried the Fresh Foam X Hierro V7 but they were no match for the comfort of the Fresh Foam X More Trail V2 (now that is mouthful). Can’t wait to take them on my first trail run here in Luxembourg 🇱🇺 … Keep up the good videos they have so much energy!

Bought both SG5 and Trail V2, and for me the Trail V2 wins hands down! Much bouncier and easier on the legs for those long runs. Works well on technical terrain as well I’d say. Selling the SG5s.

Ran in the V1 last year, not a bad shoe…very comfy and will protect your feet for long distances. That said, at that price point, I can’t justify picking the V2 over the speed goat 4 or 5, Ultra glide or even the Challenger ATR. Onward and upward

Great review. Agree with the assessment on these. A very comfy trail shoe for long days out in the bush. Just wondering why it has taken so long to do a review on these shoes? I'm sure they came out in August, September 2021. What I do appreciate about your reviews is that they are usually not very long after the shoe drops which helps with comparisons of similar new offerings. In any case I'm glad to see this shoe finally getting the kudos it deserves. Keep up the good work.

I have two pairs (one green and one yellow) for my very wide feet with high arch and hallux rigidus (severly arthritic toes). Love them. Olympus 4 and 5 have similar wide toebox and rocker, but the inside heel wears out very quickly. Speedgoat not wide enough.

i'm a little confused about the scores. It seems like "perfect" is 8 or 9 and really bad is 6 or 7... If the scale goes from 0 to 10 then why not use the whole spectrum in the reviews?

I also don't like that system but it's not unique to SJD. I think it has to do with the American school grading system where 90 - 100 = A, 80-89 = B, 70-79 = C (average), 60-69 (below avg), < 60 = F / Fail

I try to think “politically” about the scoring system. SJD is “beholden to no one” as he likes to say but in truth, if he was giving out a lot of 4s and 5s the free shoe spigot “might” dry up… so this allows him to keep what might be not great shoes in the same league as maybe much better shoes, but the price he pays is that when you say a shoe is “better” than another shoe and it beat it by maybe .1 or .2 that is basically a rounding error and not an indicator of a quality difference. Not a huge deal but def pay attention to individual ratings - when one attribute or another gets “hammered” with a 5 or a 6 that might mean look elsewhere if it’s important to you. In the end you just need to watch the full reviews, if you know your feet then you’re likely to get all the info you need.

@@michaellopour7409 that’s a great interpretation of the system. Been watching for a while and the way he speaks About The shoes really takes a lot to (his excitement/inflection/etc.). I think it’s a larger part of our culture. Most places ask for 5 stars if they performed as they should have. To me, that should be a 2.5- average. If they went above in a few wdd as us, MAYBE a 4. But most places should never get a 5. Look at the star system for chefs or hotels…5 star is literally the best in the world. I think this way of scoring takes out the nuance and makes it difficult as some one trying to pick a shoe (in this case).

Wow! I must say… I LOVE this shoe. I also own Speedgoat 5, and I think these NB shoes are way better. Very comfortable, no hot spots, and great traction. My fav shoe of the past 12 months by a mile!

@@chlapik1988 Hello, I just used these shoes for a 300 Mile section hike and really enjoyed them. Comfort and traction were great, the stack height might be a concern with ankle roll “depending on terrain”…at the end of the day I would recommend and purchase them again. I use them often for long trail runs and hiking… take care and have a great day. Another option is Altra Olympus 4 another great shoe.

Great review as always, Seth! Thanks for mentioning the country of origin for this shoe. This is an important criteria in the buying decision for many athletes. (I would buy shoes made in Vietnam, but boycott shoes made in China, due to their labour practices and represive policies against some minorities). I have the NB Fresh Foam More Trail V1 and, like the V2, it has a very comfortable ride but not stable on technical trails. Best for gravel or hard-packed trails. No undue wear or issues so far.

Seth. Regarding to durability.. fresh foam x lasts much longer than hokas eva compound. Hokas usually dry out and deform in a year, no matter how little or how much you use them. Ive used some nb ffx shoes daily for over a year and they still feel like new. Same pop and bounce

Bondi is somewhere in the middle. My 2 speedgoats also dried out. Who knows.. i just feel they are inconsistent with the foams.

@@kristianandres7647 nothing wrong. Just to be aware that is a less premium product that focus mainly on durability. I tested briefly on a Topo shoe vs MTN racer 2 that has Megagrip. Trek Evo has significantly less grip on the wet and is much less flexible on the hard stuff. I have it on my telemark boots as well. You can feel the material is much stiffer and probably more solid. Still very good but why not Megagrip on a such premium shoe?

@@antoinedaina355 good to know, I have the MTN racer 1 and 2 unfortunately while I agree the mega grip is very grippy, durability on the terrain I run is pretty poor. 300kms and lugs are 75% worn off of the MTN 1 forefoot. Will be testing out the the More Trail V2 soon, snows finally almost off the trails. I will say this, guaranteed the Vibram XS is far superior to the garbage outsole on the V1 it was absolutely terrible even on dry terrain.

You may also want to have a look at inov-8 shoes with graphene rubber. I find the sole of my TerraUltra G270 extremely durable with a grip not so far behind Megagrip. Cheers!

This NB More v 2 BY FAR is more forgiving on my legs, by far. The fit, however, is the key. If you feel confined in these on first try, don't think they will expand much because of that toe protect overlay.

Been in the NB FF X more trail V1 for a year now and I like them enough to buy V2 as soon as REI gets them in, but agree about losing a couple mm stack height for better stability. My V1 is twitchy, I tend to twerk (roll) an ankle in them as I did in all Hoka's I've owned prior to better options. The NB FF X more fit my foot, Hoka not so good a fit for me, actually a terrible toe shape for my feet so no contest with V1 or V2 vs Hoka anything. Another issue I had with V1 was grip, it was a slippery trail shoe and not just on damp rock, but also on dry rock with a fine coating of sandy silty dirt days after the rain, I assume the new Vibram sole could help there, not sure because I have had Vibram sole trail runners that were slippery on wet rock, tree roots and wet wooden creek crossing bridges, in fact, to date the only Vibram sole trail shoe I've had with good grip on everything is the Altra Olympus 4.0 I alternate with the NB FF X more. Altra Olympus 4.0 has the same stack height as the NB but it is zero drop and the wide "footprint" orthopedic shoe toe shape provides stability in spades, I rarely twerk an ankle in them. I'm already on my second pair of them.

@@rogerbizarello9197 Hard to say, I think about the same. My V1 is shot so can't really compare it to my well-used V2. I feel the new V2 has a firmer feel but compresses well in use, but all my older running shoes end up feeling like flat tires in comparison to a new pair, even a new pair of the same shoe. The only NB FF road shoe I tried was 1080 V10, the testicle heel pocket was murder, set off a "dormant" couple of years healed Achillies insertion tendonitis condition which subsided when out of the shoe - I sent them back, but even with their lower stack height, I felt they were softer cushy than the FF MORE V!/V2 trail shoes.

why do trail running shoes tend to have a lower hell to toe drop than most other road running shoes?

I guess you're more likely to spend a longer time running in trail shoes, and given that raised heels of any kind are unnatural for the foot, the lower drop generally makes the experience more healthy. Over longer distances, I tend to get more tired in higher-drop shoes, so I can confirm that.

The "Chonk-stack" magic in the More v2 trail is real, people. I like this shoe 3x more than the Speedgoat 5. The SG5 is fine, but that short tongue and the weird mesh-stretch make them a little unpredictable over 15 miles on trails. This thing is plush, soft, but bouncy. Great grip, and you can just bomb over trails and scree - and you're protected. Amazing shoe. Right up there with Xodus Ultra.

I purchased the speedgoat 5 for an upcoming trail race.... felt like I was running with 2 bricks on my feet on first run......🤣🤣🤣me thinks more trail bashing needed!....as the trail race I am doing is mainly easy going fire track, think I'll use the Puma Velocity Nitro 2 comfy, light and puma grip felt equal to the goats on the easy stuff..... and hopefully stability not an issue....maybe this trail newbie will regret it and yearn for those goats 🤣🤣🤣

The fit on the V1 is definitely wider than the SG. It accommodates higher volume feet, which works well for me. The only disadvantage is that it makes the shoe a little more “clunky” at faster pace. But if you just want to go easy for long distances as Seth mentioned, the NB is a good option.

@@philippegagne268 V2 fit is definitely narrower than V1. SG 5 is a wider fit and the upper tends to stretch out with a few runs. That being said as with most New Balance shoes you can get the More Trail in a wide version. The V2 is substantially different than V1 the addition of Vibram and more locked in fit is a game changer. Just a bit of a bummer with the weight gain.

Couple comments 1st if you happen to live (like I do in eastern MA) near any New Balance Factory outlets you may be able to pick these up for much less $$. I bought the V1 for $99 while the retail was $165. You made no mention of toe box width. I own both the SG4 and the NBV1 and the toe box is far more comfortable on the NB and really a shoe made for less technical trail but for many many miles. I would never attempt the things I can do with the SG4’s in the White mountains with either the V1 or V2 NB shoes. They are just not made for those technical conditions. While the XS trek is an upgrade from the V1’s sole it’s no match for MegaGrip of the SG in technical terrain for grip and safety. These are really 2 different shoes IMHO. Frankly the tongue on the SG sucks. To short and no padding. I really dislike it. Very happy to hear about the tongue on the NB shoe. Not sure why manufacturers are sticking unpadded tongues in shoes. Terrible idea. I still have to own a pair of Speedgoats but for more mellow trails and my next ultra it’s going to be the NB v2 trail

What shoe do ypu recommend for rocky tech new england trails? I ordered some lone peaks and the olympus today from altra. I have very wide feet and suffer from blisters on my bunions. Holing the zero drop doesnt f me all up!

@@raynerussell7998 I have long feet (size 14) but not wide. I’m a big fan of the Hoka Speedgoat 5 with it’s perfect balance of cushion, weight, and traction. I’m not sure if the wide versions would be wide enough for you. Also really like the VJ Ultra. It has some of the best traction I’ve experienced. The other shoe I really like is the Solomon Ultra Glide. Traction not as good as other 2 but I really like them. You might want to try Saucony Xdous Ultra. I’ve heard good things about them. Sorry it is hard to recommend since I don’t have wide feet and everyone has their personal taste. I’m almost 50 and 185 pounds, so cushion is important to me.

Yea i tried the speed goats on in wide and they're still too narrow. I currently have the Nike wildhorse 7's and those are also too narrow. Hoping one of the altras work out.

Seth I’ve done over 400k in the New Balance fresh foam more trail v2 they got better & better as I used them, I’ve done a few reviews on my Chanel, 100% worth the money, thanks for letting us know the deromater test 44 my feet feel less beat up after long runs than the Hoka Stinson ATR 😮 🥳👍🍀🌲🏃🏼🏔😀
