We had a very similar issue and it turned out to be a leaky Racor. We replaced it and have never had any other issues. It was a bad seal but the plastic had actually deteriorated around the edges preventing even a new seal from sealing. Good luck!

I hear you say you regularly start the engine when at anchor. As a live aboard sailor for 40 years, I strongly believe that you should never do that. Even when in a marina or at anchor for months. Don’t. Why? Because unless you run it hot for at least one hour you get Vapor in your system. Which does not damp out when you stop it. Hence it causes unnecessary rust in the engine. Giving problems later on. Our engine is now 25 years old and normally starts at first attempt every time. Over last fifteen years we had practically no problems. Okay a starter blew out. And now we had a double lightning strike destroying some parts. After all it’s a boat. But we hear of many people starting once a week and then switch of after 10 minutes… they all have engine problems. Have a great flight /holiday.

Smart move given the circumstances. Hope you make it safely and on time to your midwest destination given the predicted weather. Not sure how your engine electric conversion is going or if your plans have changed. Here are some thoughts 1) take the time to really fix the starboard engine so it is reliable, but weigh the cost vs new as in Item 2 2) There are 40+hp marine diesel motors out of China/ SE Asia for around $3K plus shipping. A mono sailboat (on Ytube) got one 10 yrs ago and it worked fine and came with harness. 3) several yrs ago Ytuber Tuck and Linnybin/now Sailing Chaos got a 13hp HF gas engine and used it along with original transmission plus a 12v water pump to cool exhaust to power their 30' sailboat- Jury rig yes but it did push the boat for around $400. You might consider one of the 10hp air cooled diesel engines costing around $400-500 and using safer diesel fuel. Apparently your cat can be pulled at a few knots in calm conditions by a 10hp dinghy, maybe a 10hp diesel installed in port hull could be your backup. 4) same Ytuber as above put in a 7-8kw electric motor and controller, attached to his regular transmission for an inexpensive $1500 from a marine electric conversion co- perhaps the same one you are considering. One of the big expenses for electric motor conversion is the battery bank so consider the 48v 16kwh complete battery kits with 200-250A BMS going for around $1700-$2000 using 304ah lifepo4 cells.

I find it hilarious that you are of the "ostrich head in the sand" school of mechanics!! 😅😅😅😂 I'm with ya sweet, one it show faith in his work (kind of) and two is there's no sweating the repair until it doesn't work. Your so right for blown town before something else blows up or falls off. Boat life Bitches!!! Good luck and be safe. Love the show but stop buzzing that man's head, is he auditioning for auschwitz concentration camps movie I don't know about??? Love the shows.. Safe and Happy Thanksgiving e

Your DIESEL engine got wet enough from the rain and something got wet that is why it wouldn't start? Given the minimal electronics on a diesel engine, if your diesel engine did not start, you should count your blessings that it did NOT start because your boat must have other major issues if that much rain is getting into the engine compartment to stop it from starting. You are safer at anchor with that boat with only one engine that ran, now it doesn't. I love how you guys have managed to do what you are doing on such a low budget but there is a point where what is working and not working on your boat, and overall condition of that boat scores poorly against seaworthiness of it and the safety of your family. Especially with young Rivers onboard.
