Nice tips but I struggle with staying at the baseline comment. I have been playing for 3 months at the beginning/intermediate level and I find that most people at that level that move closer to the kitchen miss their shot; my baseline game is decent from my tennis background so I tend to do better; and this goes back to common mistake #4 - trying to do too much, volleys are difficult. And I find baseline playing to be more fun.
@georgefairfax65082 жыл бұрын
Because you play pickle like you played tennis your game will always be weak. The player at net always has the advantage
@BetterPickleball2 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel you're right tennis players have an advantage when playing from the baseline, and yes the volley is a more difficult shot. If your intention is to just have fun and stay at your current level, then by all means, stay at the baseline. If at some point you'd like to move up in levels that strategy makes it impossible. But that's the great part of this sport, we all get to choose what we want from it and how we enjoy doing it. Have fun out there!
@henrystrauss168 Жыл бұрын
You won't find many people who want to play with you if you stay at the baseline, as, the strategy is to "Stay tethered" so to speak, with your partner and you can cover more of the court. When you stay at the baseline there's a huge hole where the ball will come right through and your team will lose the point. Its just not good pickleball strategy.

@BetterPickleball3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon, welcome to pickleball. It's similar to USTA ratings. Most players are self-rated until they play in a tournament when the rating is adjusted based on their record. There are certified raters who will rate at a club level. This helps to put players on courts with players of a similar level. Here's a guide to the ratings which you may find helpful usapickleball.org/tournaments/tournament-player-ratings/player-skill-rating-definitions/

I don't understand the last point you made. If I stay back, then I have all the time to decide what to do. If my opponent is right at the net, she has less time to react to what I hit. The game at the kitchen line is so fast. Please explain.
@BetterPickleball2 жыл бұрын
Hi Indie, I know it sounds strange but it's just the opposite. When you are at the back the players at the net can attack a ball that's above the net and hit hard it at your feet which gives you less time to react. When they are at the net their feet are hidden from you and you can't hit the same type of shot. To get at their feet you have to hit a slow high shot. In addition, if you stay back you have more angles to cover. Another look at the picture might help. Hope that helps.

@BetterPickleball Жыл бұрын
One of the interesting things about Pickleball is that you really don't need to utilize the wrist joint as much as you think you do. In fact, it's often when people get too "wristy" that the shots go into the net! Try using more of your shoulder joint rather than your wrist to move the ball and see if that helps alleviate some pain!

@BetterPickleball3 жыл бұрын
At the under 50 pro level it seems to be changing although it’s subjective since there aren’t any official stats. Hitting multiple drives and keeping them in is challenging. Most players in the 3.0-4.0 would benefit from ducking after the 1st drive. People will be surprised at how many go out.
@LatiNoble3 жыл бұрын
@@BetterPickleball Yes! The shallow return really is the reason we’re seeing less of a short game. My coach has become quite the stickler for penalizing shallow returns and not driving 3rd shots that are from short returns. Another reason for less dinking is the importance of letting out balls go. This skill forces “bangers” to play a dinking game, which they hate.

I agree. I’m thankful I learned the game 8-10 yrs. ago when I lived in WA state. 4 yrs. ago I returned to SW Indiana and was pleased to hear that PB was being played here. So far, what I have found is 75% or more of these players are simply former tennis players. No one actually taught them techniques or how to play the game properly. I guess the correct term for them is bangers? They want to stay on that back line and hit it hard back & forth at each other. When I see this, I’ll hit a bunch of short shots or cross court shots.
