One Way To Find Out How Much Sleep You Actually Need (animated)

Better Than Yesterday

Better Than Yesterday

Күн бұрын

One of the problems in today's society is that we're purposely getting less sleep than our bodies need. Usually it's because we have to go to work, or go to school. And this is bad, as we're sacrificing our health in return.
Because of that, getting enough sleep can be a huge hidden advantage for you. Imagine having your brain function more efficiently than of those around you. That's what the right amount of sleep will get you. Better mood, better focus, ability to think clearly etc.
But getting sufficient sleep for just one night isn't enough. You need to get enough sleep every single night to reap these benefits.
Now you might be wondering, exactly how much sleep should you be getting.
The standard prescription is 7-9 hours, but how do you know where exactly you personally fall in that range?
First you need to understand that you, as an individual, are completely unique.
And the amount of sleep your body requires also depends on many different external factors.
That means there isn't an exact amount of sleep you should be getting, as the amount actually changes from day to day.
In this video I'll explain how to find out, how much sleep YOU PERSONALLY need.

If you have to set an alarm to get up at a certain time, get a timer for a bedside lamp. Being awakened by light is gentler than being awakened by an alarm clock. If you are in deep sleep when the lamp comes on, it probably won't wake you up. So set an alarm clock to go off 10 minutes later. That, of course, will wake you up, but thanks to the lamp, you probably won't be in deep sleep when the alarm clock goes off.

Nice idea, might try some day. As it is I am awoken by IPhone sound of bird chirping slowly getting louder rather than a Jerk awake standard alarm.
@alwaysuseless
@alwaysuseless 4 жыл бұрын
@MissVasques .. The SLOWLY getting louder is very cool. Of course, a timer is way cheaper than an iPhone. I have a lamp on both sides of the bed. If I got a timer for the other lamp, I could set it for 10 minutes later and never set an alarm clock. I couldn't sleep through both lamps being on.

I use a lamp only with no audible alarm. I use a bright, daylight bulb (white light like the sun) on a floor lamp so it lights up my whole room. I have found that I feel much better waking up this way and after just a couple days, I began to wake up a couple minutes before the light would turn on
@alwaysuseless
@alwaysuseless 4 жыл бұрын
@Daniel Nicholls ..This sounds good too. No pun intended. I would especially like your method, if the artificial sunlight slowly got brighter. Of course, one could just leave the shades, blinds, or whatever up, if rising with the sun were your aim. The problem with that, though, is it's better to sleep in a pitch dark space, and the street lamps and other outdoor lights make that only possible with all blinds, curtains, etc. drawn. I actually use cardboard between the glass and the blinds cut to the exact size of the windows.

This is the worst approach ever in the world. Once I went to bed on 21:00 and wake up at 01:00. Then staying awake for the whole night and become sleepy again when it's time to go to work (08:00). Only when I go to bed later than 00:00, usually I am able to sleep till morning.

For anyone willing to try this: start on weekends and notice when you wake up naturally, and then on first weekday set an emergency alarm at the latest possible time, prepare ahead of time for work ( prep breakfast, bag, work, outfit, plan whatever you need) for the fastest bed to office/class. If you wake up before your alarm, then get up right away. If you don’t , that means you need to sleep earlier. Make sure you don’t do this on days you went out of your routine (example: hanging out till late, revenge procrastination, deadline work or study). Eventually you’ll start getting sleepy at a regular time if you maintain a regular wake up time. Include exercise or physical activity in your day as well.

I have been waking up without an alarm for only 5 days now, but I can already say the positive impact of doing so is disproportionately higher than what I could imagine. @@advenco344 I used to be able to postpone my alarm endless times, and in each of the 10-minutes intervals between two consecutive alarms I was able to fall back to sleep quickly and fully. This means I was losing a lot of time and also feeling unhappy because I would normally wake up tired (even if, in terms of duration, I was probably getting enough sleep) and rarely get up at the time I wanted. Now I am consistently waking up feeling more energised and always able to get up right away. As I said, I am also doing most/all of the things suggested in the playlist to which this video belongs (including going to sleep / waking up at regular times and exposing myself to sunlight as soon as I can) - but, if you had to ask me what I feel, my feeling is that leaving the alarm out had an early and detectable impact. More precisely, I feel that the sleep cycle issue (at around 6:00 in this video) might be the most relevant element in my case. But even the first thing, mentioned at 4:49, I guess.

I think the idea is to go to sleep as early as possible and have free time in the morning instead of the evening. Unfortunately nothing will be open, nobody will be awake, and nothing will be on tv. Also they don’t mention this but it’s also bad to go to sleep at different times so you’ll never be awake in the evening again. Society is, in a lot of ways, designed to make healthy living as difficult as possible.

Sometimes I have the feeling that no matter how long I sleep, I do not feel any more awake. E.g. if on the weekend I wake up naturally after 9 hours, I still feel tired and then I go back to sleep for two more hours, I do not feel any more awake than before. Actually, it feels like I am getting tired again if I stay in bed and only get awake by getting up and doing something.

A tip for those just starting this that I'll be using Try to make a sleep schedule where you willl attempt to wake yourself up at 4 ish at least 3 hours before your actual alarm would go off. Set your alarm as a backup in case you really have soomething you can't oversleep for but try to set yourself up so that you'd be awake long before that

@@sunshinenOJ Define early hours? Our bodies are based on an internal clock that we ourselves can set, though the sun does have somthing to do with it it is possible. All I’m saying in this comment is go to bed super duper early so that your 8 hours of sleep will put you waking up at like 4 even if you would actually only need to wake up at 8 to make it to work. That way you wake up naturally and aren’t at any risk of missing work and can still have the alarm as a backup

You should set your sleep pattern in a way that supports your daily schedule. There are plenty of ways to manipulate it and I already made a video on it. When should you go to bed is up to you. But try to find out what your sleep chronotype is. Some people function best in the morning. While others are what we call "night owls" and they are in their most optimal state late at night. There is no right or wrong time to go to bed, I did however come over a research that says that the most optimal hormonal release happens in the hours between 10 to 12 at night. Good luck!

"Wake up without a set alarm" easier said than done, I can't go to sleep at 7pm to be sure to wake up at 4.30 am when I have the morning shift. It works like that when you have always the same-ish wake up time, I have to work through 2 shifts, 3 now because of the pandemic. It's not realistic to go to sleep 8 hours before 4.30 am because that is so early that naturally I would always sleep more than that. not to mention the night shift. It's impractical, not reliable if you have to be on time, and not realistic. It works only if you, let's say, have to wake up every morning at 7.30. than you might want to go to sleep to wake up at 7, to have some spare time in case your body decides to sleep more.. In my case it's absurd, I could try it when I'm home from work for whatever reason. Maybe we'll get a better view on it

I would tend to say its at the point where you dont fall asleep again as quickly as normal. But thats really just a guess. I am having a similar problem due to other people in my house waking me up with noise. Sometimes if I cant sleep again but clearly didnt sleep enough, it helps to get up, do something (drink some water, walk around, last time I even ate something) and then get back to bed if you feel tired. But thats just what works for me. You have to find out what works for you mostly by yourself.

There's reasons why that happens. Sometimes insomnia causes people to wake early and sometimes it's because you wake mid sleep cycle. I'm in the same basic boat where I always feel groggy for a few hours after waking up unless I do something to get my body temperature and heart rate up. Later in the day tends to be a better time for me to evaluate my sleep.

They make alarm clocks not that start with a sound - such as gentle rain - and gradually the volume will increase so that you are woken up in an easy manner. I read many comments and found that many people say it's impossible to sleep without an alarm. So here's a trick: Block a time for your experiment that is during a time that you ~know~ is free for you, for example: block 8/9pm to 6/7am if your commitments are in the morning and vice versa. Pretend that this is one of your school or work projects. Make it fun by trying different variables, for example exercise for X amount of minutes and see how much it affects you. I speculate that people are aversed to try this because of fear of finding out the number of hours of sleep they need, and realize that can't fit it in their schedule (I just realized that I felt this way when I didn't try the experiment after reading about it a while back). We need to understand (which is different from knowing) that getting enough sleep will increase productivity in doing every other task. Y'all here's a fact: you think you're busy but you're not. I know it's hard to understand, but believe me. If you're in high school think back to your middle school years, if you're in college think about high school, if you're working think about college, and if you started a family think back when you're single: Almost always the previous chapter of your life was less busy than the current one you're in, but you didn't know it when you were knee-deep in responsibilities of the previous years. If you can't prioritize what's important to you now, it'll be hard later, and your previous experiences are proof of this. I myself will not put this off any longer and will try it this week. Once I know how much I really need (I think it's close to 7/8hrs) I'll convert it to the equivalent Triphasic sleep amount: which is sleep for 1.5hrs, 3 times a day (total 4.5 hrs) to replace 8hrs of monopolistic sleep.
