This was taken from an old VHS compilation from the 1980's. As you can see the original Paramount logos are intact as are the title cards. This is one of the classic Betty Boop cartoon in which Cab Calloway appears

AWESOME find. I knew this print with original titles was issued on laserdisc in 1990, but I never realized the same print was issued on VHS too. The Fleischer Story and at least one PBS documentary used the opening to support a contention that Betty Boop is Jewish (probably because her dad looks like he's wearing a yarmulke). But not only is hossenfeffer (what they're trying to get Betty to eat) a German dish, but rabbits aren't even Kosher.

Originally released in January 1932, and the only one to feature Betty's "Germanesque" parents. Cab's movements were "rotoscoped" (traced onto animation sheets) for the "walrus ghost". Very few Max Fleischer/Paramount theatrical prints are known to exist, as almost all of the master negatives were acquired by U.M.& M. TV in 1955, which refilmed the titles (originally without Fleischer's credits- he was forced to sue them to have them reinstated) and spliced them directly onto the negatives.

That's Cab Calloway. (And I bet you thought Michael Jackson invented the moonwalk.) If you'd like to see him sing the entire song as, more or less, himself rather than an animated walrus, you could rent the Blues Brothers movie ... it was made about 50 years later, but yes, that's him playing Curtis. As a bonus, he's being backed by (among others) Tom Malone, Lou Marini, and Alan Rubin.

@RockinEd No, that's not what happened at all. It's just that when the VHS release was made, they used a neg that was not altered with the U.M. & M title changes. When it was released in THE BETTY BOOP SCANDALS OF 1974, the title was enlarged to the extent that the original Paramount-Publix signature was cropped.

Does anybody know if this was restored with original titles on the Blu ray Betty Boop collection?
@ohnogloop28999 жыл бұрын
+Marvin The Jazzman They scanned the negatives for the Blu-Ray release; in which the UM&M titles were spliced in for. This version, however, as you see in this video, likely came from a slightly detoriorating 16mm print, which for the likes of others are very rare nowadays and fall into "private collectors".
@RayPointerChannel13 жыл бұрын
@fromthesidelines My, you know so much about this. You are undoubtedly the Fleischer expert! Especially so about "restorations." Pardon me, but a restoration would have removed the frame jumps and splice lines in the opening titles. Simply returning the Paramount "trademark" is not enough to qualify as a restoration. Also a true restoration would have avoided the DVNR effects. Would you happen to know what that is as well? Perhaps you could elucidate on that.
@RayPointerChannel13 жыл бұрын
@ParamountCartoons Yes and no. The situation here is what I described. As a point of reference, it is best to credit the source for such information that does not come directly for your own personal knowledge or resources. Since so many dupe negs were made, it is not entirely accurate to say that such things are completely true. In the case of the Screen Songs, only one so far exists with the original Paramount open and tag, AIN'T SHE SWEET, with Lillian Roth.
