She's at her best when she's relaxed and animated, and roars at certain parts, while also hitting those impossibly high notes and holding them. This is my favorite version of this - they should have had a full clip of her singing from the film as well. Instead they cut to James Caan walking around....no man is worth interrupting Betty Buckley for.

You're so right about the scene in Tender Mercies. It kills me each time I watch the film, and Betty's magnificence is so sadly interrupted.

Really? It is just be of the worst versions I have ever heard. The version on the movie soundtrack is so much better. This version is an imitation of a musical stage coach approach. They way she talks much of the lyrics is terrible. And then she just shows of her voice on the rest. And it is horrid in my. I can understand why some may like that part but there is zero subtlety. She is a great singer. But there is a reason why she has never done particularly well outside of playing stage musical roles.

James Caan? And have zero recollection of him being in the movies. He doesn’t appear to be listed as one of the cast. Or are you talking of a stage version?

The movie OST version isn't her, it's Lane Brody for some reason....

Robert Duvall was the actor who played Mac Sledge - not James Caan...

I just watched Tender Mercies. Was so weird because right before the movie I googled Betty Buckley because I was thinking about 8 is Enough. Then I hear this lady in the movie singing Over You. I didn’t recognize her at first but I was blown away by the song. Wow. Goosebumps and tears. So beautiful Betty. Just like you ❤

I was fortunate enough to see her perform Memories ,in CATs on Broadway. It was memorable even years later.

First time I heard this song on a jukebox I was so impressed. When I discovered it was Betty Buckley, the mom from "8 is enough", you could have blown me over with a feather! What Pipes! What Range! What a great, Super talented lady.
@KansaiTeacher2 жыл бұрын
Yep. She is amazing. but I bet the jukebox had a way better version than this.
@tommykirwan6764 Жыл бұрын
I don't remember if the jukebox had a better version. I certainly don't find ANYTHING that I'd change about this Live version. The way Betty Buckley sustained those high notes for SOOO Long is incredible enough for me. I only see/hear a Great Singer belting out a Great Song - in front of a Live Audience!👍👍

Tender Mercies is such an amazing underrated movie. It may be too slow for some but I loved its message and acting from Duvall. Truly a hidden gem if you have the patience for something a little slower watch it! It’s amazing.

I agree - wonderful, wonderful movie. Watched it (again) about a month ago with my husband. It’s the slowness, the quietness that makes it so powerful.

She performed her own songs twice on EIE. She had already had success in 1776, as Martha Jefferson, on Broadway (in 1969) singing "He Plays the Violin." That was 8 years before she came to EIE.

Betty Buckley broke hearts with her tough as nails portrayal of a CW singer in Tender Mercies. She is a master at chewing the scenery as she goes head to head with Robert Duval.

Is this the version that was on the radio long, long ago? I tried looking it up on Spotify and the only version I can find is by a Lane Brody and I’m pretty sure she’s not the one I used to listen to back then
