She was able to portray very different characters in her 80+ year career. Here, Sue Ann was ruthless. On the Golden Girls, Rose was kind and very naive. Elka on Hot in Cleveland was blunt to the point of having no filer. On games shows as herself, she was warm and kind to both the celebs and the audience members. However, all characters that she played had perfect comedic timing. We shall not see the likes of her again. God Speed Betty (1922-2021).

Betty was extremely lucky that she got two major roles on hugely popular TV series in which she was able to play two completely different characters - one conniving and crafty and mean, and the other clueless and decent and nice. I remember watching this show every Saturday night for the first 3 season. Going off the College ruins your TV viewing habits. Why did it never occur to me how strange it was that they had bookcases built into the steps leading to "Mary's front door". What a novel idea. You see it a lot in "Tiny Homes" today. One of the best written, best acting and just an all around great show. It was sad to loose four veteran actors of this show in 2021. Aging is a factor. Most of the actors who died in 2021 lived a good rich life well into their 90s. BW being the exception who almost made it to her 100 birth age. I hate to drum up the old adage-"They just don't make sitcom's like this much anymore. I know as we age we long for what we perceive as a better time or a less complicated time. I may be wrong.

Mary Richards was the product of a conservative, polite, Presbyterian upbringing in Roseberg, MN in the forties and fifties She was introduced to feminism as an adult with a couple years of college and already in the workforce for a good eight to ten years. MTM changed her hairstyles quite a bit until she settled on a style later in the show. She used to do the Priscilla Presley thing of dyeing her hair black, wearing it long and big but then opting for a far more natural and very flattering golden brown shade. Her peach cardigan here paired with the very pale gray slacks and a button front blouse were classic casualwear in the seventies.
@pamelahofman17853 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure she was dying her hair dark. Her hair was very dark earlier on the Dick Van Dyke show. Then later in the MTM show, the lighter color was probably because she was going grey underneath the dye so the dye over it didn't make her hair as dark. That happens a lot when people get older. I know friends, (I'm 60) who dye their hair with the same color year after year, but their natural color is getting greyer and greyer so the dye doesn't get as dark over what it's hiding.
