Counterfeit is a function of profit. The larger the profit margin, the greater the counterfeit. The most effective way to combat it is to reduce the profit margin. A lot of comments here by people who don't understand how businesses work and complain about prices. Manufacturing costs are not the only thing that factor into the price of a product. Fakes are cheaper because they just copy. Brands need to pay designers, R&D staff, engineers, etc. to create products. They need to pay for rent for corporate buildings, office staff, and IT infrastructure (work e-mails, computers, pc programs, etc.). They also need to pay for marketing (paid media, events,etc.). Easy to charge half the price of MSRP for a fake when you pay overseas workers less than $500 a month. I understand some items are overpriced but its supply and demand, we like scottys and collect them because of the exclusivity. If no one bought it, the price would go down.

This is good to know, but also just shows how intentional it is to keep people out of golf. None of these products are worth their price point. Period. It’s just like fashion brands. Gucci jeans are no better than Wrangler and will likely fall apart 3-5x faster, but sure, why not pay 6x as much for no reason? Maybe make things affordable and *news flash* you’ll make even more money because more people can afford to play golf and have good equipment. Also funny when the knock offs perform as well if not better than the “original” 🤣 Clubs are likely the biggest issue if they’re missing internal tech. Otherwise this is just showcasing how pretentious the golf industry is… and how much they’re milking everyone for.
@ahastar114110 ай бұрын
I mean the examples he gave were premium products on the market. There's plenty of good affordable used equipment out there, so buying new is really more of a luxury than a necessity to begin playing the game. To your point on new clubs, the missing tech is what makes real clubs pricy and counterfeits cheap. The one thing I'll note in your example is you are comparing a high end fashion product versus a cheap product. People buy the fashion product out desire and want not because its needed. No one needs a scotty Cameron putter and the price reflects what it is, a premium luxury product. There are cheaper more affordable putter brands on the market. I would be willing to bet that as crappy as gucci jeans are, fake gucci jeans or fake wrangler jeans are probably much worse as there isn't even an attempt to maintain the brands integrity. I would argue that attitudes to new or bad golfers and cost of instruction are more of a road block to new people golfing, than the cost of brand new equipment.

@@ahastar1141 yea I hear ya but I’m generally around my buddies when we play so I don’t usually worry about it. But if I go somewhere unfamiliar I will bring out another cover if I decide to use a nice Scotty that day

lets be honest...the fake one might cost 50cents to make...the real one cost 65cents....the upcharge is insane in these things...s.cameron pays a factory in china to make 30,000 head covers lets say...after that order is done same factory that has all the machines and materials set will then make 30,000 more, maybe use cheaper material and change fonts to cover lawsuits. most products made in a Chinese factory do this. the fakes are basically the same with corners cut. how much do you think it costs to make a golf sock for a putter? its no more then a few dollars each, if that.

Does "fake counterfeit" means it's real then?

People in the comments here trying to make excuses for fake products astound me. I can maybe understand the argument for head covers or grips, but for clubs and shafts, no way. The reason a driver costs $500 is not because it takes them $490 to manufacture, but because a manufacturer has to put thousands of dollars into development of each club. Hundreds of hours into research and development of materials, shape, technology, etc means that all of that money put up front to design the club needs to be made back in sales. Then you add retailer mark ups, sponsorship deals, and everything else, that is what causes a club to be a certain price. If you want a cheaper club, then buy used/from a manufacturer that doesn’t put as much into the above items, don’t buy a fake Scotty Cameron just to flex to your friends at your $20 muni that you have a Scotty. You all need to get over yourselves and stop trying to flex on a budget, you’re only screwing yourself when your Chinese driver puts all 12 of your brand new Pinnacle balls into the trees.

It’s truly amazing that counterfeiting can become so in “your face”, the day to day items that we golfers buy are in their hands. Best to buy from your pro shop.

does anyone need to pay 10 times as much for EXACTLY the same grip? maybe these novelty club producers should produce something significant and impossible to counterfeit...like real golf equipment. you don't see counterfeit persimmon woods and forged blades, do you? and i have yet to see ANY putter worth 1000$...scotty cameron is a rip off joke.
@tonysmario81710 ай бұрын
but i do see a lot of hackers with thousands of dollars worth of novelty golf equipment...does it really matter if the clubs are counterfeit? not at all. golf is a ruined sport, full of greedy capitalists and cry baby novelty pros. it's the most boring rendition of itself in history. while everyone gets rich!!

I could justify industry prices for these products if they were made by Americans paid proper American wages.

You would not have lost $500 because you would have paid $69. But you would have most likely got what you paid for.

Never buy club’s second hand and you won’t have a problem.

I buy all of my clubs second hand, and haven't had a problem. As with new clubs, buy from a reputable dealer. I've bought almost of of my set used from Callaway (including my Ping irons).
