It didn't take me too long to realize that my PLCE Bergen was nothing more than 4.5 kilos of sleeping bag carrier. (Kit only weight 12 kilos) into a Bergen weighing 4.5 kilos meant my content was only 3 times the weight of the actual Bergen. On top of that, my Longback PLCE didn't offer the amount of comfort I wished it had, even after the modifications.
Switching & ditching technique meant I could shave a massive 7 kilos, and add comfort to my back and shoulders, without compromise the actual amount of kit otherwise placed inside a bergen. The only down side to this way of packing your kit, is that I have lost the ability to move quickly. However I have methods to counter this issue, which we will look into a little later in this series.....

It is interesting how the amount of kit carried by RegularReserve Armed Forces has increased by 50% over the last 35 years. Even if you chat to people who have been involved in civilian camping for decades they say the same thing. The days when used to camp out in a Argos sleeping bag, and use two bin liners as waterproof barrier, seem to be distant memory.

Adds the ability to travel lighter with more comfort and faster if required, carring the same kit. However the down side is it looses the ability to pack the doss bag quickly....all the best bex

Bex, just as an idea, I presume the NI pack was set up to go with belt kit. Those items like the water bottle and jet boyle would have fitted into your belt kit, lots of possibilities. I like the idea with the bivi rolled up. Just out of interest, maybe sometime you can show us a belt kit with the NI pack. With a good hip pad, I always liked the belt kit. The bergen doesn't seem to have advanced with a good waist belt but still it's a great bit of kit, thanks

There are several concluding parts to this coming up soon, one is with a webbing platform as mentioned in the vid. I neither carry water in webbing or the pack, look out for how too on the quick tips soon, and the (Jet Boil) weighs next to nothing in the Ni. The (hip belt) on a bergen are actually (kidney pads). Wrap the pads directly under your lower rib cage, and OVER the TOP of your illiac crest (hip bone) it is buckled up directly over your belly button. Hip pads are squared off and come around your hips and sit a hell of a lot lower, kidney pads, (well sit around your kidneys) hence their strange shape compared to a hip belt. you will be able to drop nearly all the weight off your shoulders completely. I still often see recruits cut their pads off and grunt the weight on their shoulders, thinking they are hip belts that don't work lol. Agree on the woolly pulley, the new polyester equivalent is not as warm, or versatile. Lighter yes but the woolly has more uses and also warm when wet (mine is old and all wool). I also have newer one which is 80% wool, which is twice as big as I need, and can be used as a sleep shirt or overall when things get colder, allowing layers underneath or just the pully. Wool has so many advances, and as a medic who once nearly died on the Brecons in a storm told me, wool will always beat man made. I put a tent bag that calculates to 91L in the main compartment it took some force to get it to the bottom. It goes right up to the start of the snow bit you could still pack more on top if you wanted to fill that part making it more than a 90L compartment, thats without counting the 2 pockets in lid and the pocket on the front making it 100L for sure. Then you add the 2 rocket pockets and it's well in a 120L.

Definitely my cup of tea...good timing as well. I'm currently aiming for a sort of bugout/travel/wildcamping kit that could cover most three season situations, i travel a lot(or did!) so it has to be portable and not too out of place in a high street. Ideally a mix of surplus and normal gear that fits into a 30-40lt pack. I have Munro pack which i have added webbing to so i can add pouches, tie/bungy kit on etc, not to disimilar to what you you just did...trying to keep it under 9/10kg though, minus food and water ? A muted colored rain shield should provide you with the "Grey-man" effect you desire. Holdals are great for an urban environment , in place of a pack. Food shelter and insulation are your primary items, if you don't over think it, you will be warm dry and well fed with just these basics....thanx for subbin...bex

I use a Belgian M97 ruck and it's a brute. I never really cared for lightweight stuff. They say you can onpy pick 2 from: lightweight, cheap and durable. I'm a tight git and hate buying things 10 times. Also couldn't you roll the sleeping bag in the bivi system, assuming it isn't down?

DPM kit is generally more robust, which is where i think the weight difference starts to add up, but there again ... stealth camping/fishing etc ... doesn't really rack up the wear and tear like military usage.

The Dpm has that PU waterproof coating on the inner that adds the wight. I know when I fabsil-ed a canvas tent it added a hell of lot of weight. In two minds weather to keep any of my PLCE bergens, now I have found Berghaus 90+20.....bex

@@bexbugoutsurvivor i'll keep my current modded plce shortback (for winter use) ... i have an all arms bergen i'm going to sell, .... but i do have a berghaus ROC i'm planning to modify (and use as an overnight bag) ... my primary ruck is a wisport 75L ... old father time (going soft) has caught up with me and i eventually decided to modernize and have some comfort, .... sold my beloved large alice, sold my RM Arctic pack, sold my SAS Bergen, sold my marpat ilbe, sold my dutch army lowe alpine, sold my air support bergen, sold a couple of pimped out plce long-backs, From having a huge line up i'm down 4 bergens now. (will eventually have 3) I do have an air crew bergen .... will most likely sell that after i've used it, their not designed with comfort in mind or so i'm told.

Sound like we are a very similar path. Have sold or selling most of my PLCE 100, and am head over heals in love with my Berghaus crusader 90+20 mk1, carries everything my plce 100 can but with comfort (who'd have known...lOl) My trekking kit is pretty much dialed in now, with my REI 55 flash, thermarest Xtherm and my Vango Orion 200, base weight of just 7 Kg, Winter kit, same but a berghaus and my sleeping bags mix instead of my down quilt. Old father time has been a bit of a git hasn't he ?...lol Hence my light weight trekking kit as apposed to my heavier bush kit. Just got the Jay Jays bergen left to sell, which will afford me my DCF (cuban fiber tarp 300 grams).... The older I get the less I need, but most viewer just like seeing the videos of heavy kit, and me sweating over it I think...lol Stay safe..bex

A very useful video. Thanks. For me surplus gear is tough and budget friendly. My dad gave me 3 of his old British army ponchos. They're not the lightest, but they have a place as a quick shelter from the rain (but I just don't tend to use them that much). A basha is a much better solution, but do you have any advice on how I could perhaps get more out of those old ponchos and improve their waterproofing?

The older canvas ponchos (capes) are designed for two ponchos to be buttoned together, making a tipi type shelter, where two members of the same unit buddy up their ponchos and sleep. This depends on the type of ponchos you have. The Brit 58 pattern rain capes are perfect for this, and a stick can be used to prop the shelter up. I have tried water proofing with "fabsil" but vintage kit is often heavy and bulky, so for practical purposes a modern basha is more than enough.....bex

Suffered the weather for this one. I'd love to see tips on using the genuine NI patrol pack as it doesn't have horizontal molle straps like the newer copies. I've used some t bars to convert the front verticals to horizontal, but it's not perfect. It enabled me to attach a molle pouch to the front. I'm sure a lot of people find this issue with the NI pack and I'm sure you've got some solutions. You always do! 😂

My MTP NI has the front ladder to accept molle, but I do get it that many prefer DPM and don't want to make the change. Nice video Bex. Can I talk of something off topic, but relevant to us that can provide for ourselves that has me concerned, just need an opinion. The world knows there is a huge ship blocking the Suez Canal and could be for some time, also there is now a huge traffic jam of bulk carrier ships in the Red Sea, out into the Indian Ocean. How much fuel (Petrol/Diesel) is there in this country ? How long can it last ? How much of it comes from the Gulf area via the Suez Canal (which is at a stand still). Any shipping traffic avoiding the Suez Canal would take an extra 2 weeks to get to the UK, via the Horn of Africa and the Atlantic, instead of Suez Canal and the Med shortcut. With extra fuel being used as the lockdown rules change on Monday, so more traffic=more fuel. I am wondering if this could cause us problems, as all of Europe will be the same with their fuel situations. It may be wise for everyone to get their vehicles filled and keep them filled, just in case there are "Difficulties".

There shouldn't be any petrol or diesel carried by ships. Only crude oil travels via the Suez in both directions. Not sure of the numbers, but its in the millions of barrels per day. The oil is refined into fuel in the country you buy the fuel. Each country will have a reserve of oil back stocked. I am aware of several attempt plans to refloat the vessel. Currently digging under the ship (dredging) to refloat is pretty standard. There is also a cargo vessel on route right now, to off load the containers too, should this fail. A last resort is to dig a bypass around the ship, to move the back log of vessels, which would take the longest, and is tasked to the military, or even dismantling the ship in situee. Both the former are weeks worth of effort, by which time oil reserves will be nearly depleted. Crude tankers are now diverted to follow off coastline, to maintain a steady flow of oil, but adds weeks to the journey. Its only my guess, but judging by the last fuel shortage UK, we will be rationed with fuel with in a few days, so keep your transport topped up, and only travel for essential needs (IMO). Public transport will benefit first for fuel, in order to keep vital commuters employed, (take advantage of public transport) save your own fuel. To add salt into the wound, cargo being transported via the suez canal will affect us too (food, clothes, white goods, medical supplies) you name it.) The reroute of supplies will ensure close to normal service, if nobody bulk buys (but we know every one will tho) STOCK UP WITH TOILET TISSUES.....Seriously buy long sustaining foods such as rolled oats, rices, etc....Chances are we may not even notice the extreme efforts currently under taken, and things will just tick along.....Always plan for all foreseeable out comes, including bugging out with everything you need, should localized looting and rioting occur, (DON'T ARM IN) you'll be out numbered, but this is good practice for any eventuality (remember no one came to help, when hurricane Katrina happened) it was down to self rescue and the community working together......Sleep well...bex

@@bexbugoutsurvivor Thanks Bex, you are thinking the same as me, I just needed some sort of clarification, especially when you mentioned the last fuel drivers strike, as my Daughter, a Nurse was issued with a priority fuel pass for the local petrol garages. I am a prepper, so was already squared away for the medical emergency when that hit, as where I live between Saddleworth Moor (Pennines) and Glossop (Peak District), so prepared in September/October last year for bad winter, as I do every year. I was legally housebound for months as I am on the Critically Vulnerable list, so was shielding. I used my preps as a real world exercise, as I wasn't going anywhere for months to find any holes in my preps and made them last over 6 months without getting more shopping in. I did find some holes and now sorted them out and completely restocked for another 6 months if needed. I am sorted for alternate power needs, off grid cooking, etc. so can quite happily lock the door and bug in and bag packed, if I needed to bug out either into the local hills, where I can be quite comfortable for a while foraging, etc as the Pennine foothills are literally the other side of my back garden fence , over 1 little road around our small estate as the division , I can be on the Pennine Bridleway in less than 1 minute from my front door walking or to a friends out of the way. I have (full kit) in both DPM & MTP, I too love the 90 wooly pully and olive softies and hairy marry wool shirt, but as you will see in the weigh off video coming soon the difference is noticeable. If DPM is just a personal colour preference rather than kit choice, then stick with it...ATB...Bex
