I am someone who beats myself up so much with trying to do research about something. This review has helped ease my mind with making a decision on a new headset. I've been looking at the DT 1990 Pro for a a few weeks now, as an upgrade over my 4+ year old HD599. I think this upgrade will be good and I think I will be happy with it. Especially after watching this review.

thanks for your review - you make some very fair and interesting points. I recently upgraded from my DT 990 600 ohm to a pair of used DT 1990 Pros. I never knew about the inner slider cracking but yup, one of mine has a notch of plastic missing, I just noticed. A replacement is about £11 here in the UK so at some point I might replace it, although now that bit of plastic has removed itself, it seems to have stabilised so I don't feel any great urgency to do it. As an older person, my hearing has suffered natural drop off of higher frequency sensitivity, so whereas a pair of DT 880 Pro 250 ohm that I auditioned for about a week felt like they were snarling my ears off and had a rather muted, dry and tight bass, the 1990s by comparison, whilst bright, even by comparison to my 990 600 ohm, are nowhere near as punishing as the 880 Pros in the treble. Also, the relative increase in bass over both the 880 and 990 is very welcome. I actually love the sound of the 1990s just as they are. Overall, the 1990 are significantly more resolving in detail, which as an amateur synthesizer musician, I find very welcoming for studio work, but I mainly bought these for analytical listening and gaming and they're marvellous. For anyone who loves any of the earlier DTs (770, 880 or 990) and is considering these, I'd say they are definitely an upgrade, and definitely worthwhile as and when funds allow. As far as filtering that peak at just under 9KHz, I would sooner do it in the digital domain, if at all. An add-in, in-line, fixed narrow band attenuator of the analogue signal (basically a couple of capacitors) such as the one you've shown is an option, but I would consider it a sledgehammer to crack a nut solution, and it risks doing more harm than good, plus, as you say, processing the frequency response curve of audio equipment risks removing some of the magic that makes them so special. A more common mod is a thin layer of acoustic foam or a single ply of cheap toilet paper. If someone were to audition the 1990 Pro in store, and find the treble peak just too much to live with, then I think there would be a value to checking out the DT-990 600 ohm (or possibly the 250 ohm version) as it has that similar Beyer sonic signature, but with a considerably less pronounced treble peak, albeit with a bit less clarity and a bit less bass, but it costs a lot less money at less than half the price. Something else worth a mention with Beyerdynamic headphones is they can sound pretty harsh (quite nasty, tbh) when brand new out of the box, and definitely benefit from a good running in period - I've seen some folks talk about 200 hours!

Thinking about picking up a pair of these after hearing everything great about them. I'll give 'em a shot with Reference 4, but I gotta say, the thought of a pass-through filter is actually really neat - definitely something I'd consider.

I've had a pair of DT 1990 Pro for 2½ years and had zero problems with the headband. I recently bought the Dekoni Elite Hybrid pads, and I prefer them to either pair of stock pads.

That's great! I have thought about trying those. I am leery, as I have not cared for how Dekoni's elite velour fabric has felt on my skin in the past. Also, I am picky and really just do not like the aesthetic as well with them on (at least in the photos I have seen). The passive filter is a similarly priced solution for sound improvement, but I keep the feel and look I already enjoy. To each their own though. I am glad you have a winning solution!

@@gamingaudioguide9292 Hi i got question. My headphones will arive in 2 days so i can test stuf for sure. Right now i have audio-technica ad900x open where right side stop working so after resarch i decided on 1990 pro. I use asus xonar stx II soundcard that have build in amp so there should not be problem with power but i read a lot about pads for them and it looks like everyone have diferent opinion. If it was like 5 people saying one thing and one something else then ok but i'm lost. I spent lot of time on pc and i need comfort so stock pads most likely will be removed . I know there are 3 brands brainweiwz, wicked cushions and dekoni and most people recomend dekoni. If i buy dekoni pads do i need that filter. I play sometimes cs go and watch twitch + netflix. I don't make music. Btw are they still best for 500$ or would you recomend something else.

I loved my 1990. only thing that bothered me was the Right earside where i always got preasure somewhere on my ear. Other than that it was one of my most beloved HF. I mean i EQ´d them so the trouble didnt kill me. At least they arent as harsh as the 990 which are also pretty good EQ´d. I think the 990 are 85% of 1990 but maybe the 880 are closer hadent the pleasure to compare them yet.

I just pulled out my 1990 pros from storage today and have been enjoying them quite a lot these past hours... Lately I have been using Audeze LCD2C for music and games. Putting the 1990's back on after about 6 months with the Audeze set was kind of shocking at first.. That treble is so revealing (at times a little scary) and the rest of the frequency spectrum is really on point. When i first purchased the 1990s, I wasn't enjoying the "Beyer peak." After some deep googling, I found information on some alternative earpads that are very comfortable, and tackle the issue of the treble peak. I replaced the pads with Dekoni Elite Velour, and I'm still happy I made that upgrade! Anybody else listen to this video with your 1990s? I noticed how the microphone angle changed on the voice in different parts of the video giving it a completely different character through the different segments (or perhaps it was different mics and rooms too?).. When the graphs came up i really noticed how the SSS sounds got harsh and even had a bit of a whistle to them! These headphones are not for your average user IMO, but I like them a lot!

I've had these since mid-end 2019, and I agree with basically everything the video up until the EQ portion at the end. I personally just used the infamous reddit eq for it with B pads for the longest (btw my pads still seem firmer than a rock) until recently going back to stock A's for a refresh and trying a few different eq's. I tried to mimic your passive filter FR and I think it is definitely the way to go... I do have elite velours coming in I want to try since they are the most beloved for this headphone too, can't wait. Would just like to add warranty support is very quick and helpful. They had mine fixed up under warranty due to my cat eating one of the ear cup wires and repair costs out of warranty appear to be more than fair for anything more serious. Thank you for the video as it has helped prevent me from buying some LCD2's :)

I love everything about the DT1990 pro, build quality is insane and the sound quality is great except the harsh treble which is easily rectified with EQ. But they are THE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE HEADPHONES I have ever had on my head, I was unable to wear them for more than 30 minutes. It really was a huge disappointment having to return them, of course with anything YMMV if they fit you better than they fit me you cant go wrong buying these they are a great set of cans!

I have a pair of DT770 for about 5 and a half years now... one of the drivers is at the end of its life. Me and my wife have worn these headphones on a daily basis, seeing about 16 HOURS per day minim of use. What I'm trying to say is that the headphone itself (excluding the dying driver) is almost brand new - no scratches, deteriorated wire or outside case, nor broken joints etc. ... I'm really surprised that the DT1990 after only 1 year look like that: broken left joint, deteriorated wire :( A bit of a let down. But who knows, maybe you were more rough on them than we were.

I've been stuck on choosing this or the Sundara for my everyday headphone use - I play tons of games and constantly listen to music. I tend to play comp. games such as CS and typically need that imagery and stage advantage. Do you think it's worth that extra 250$ to go for the DT 1990 Pro or just save that cash for something else and go with the Sundara? I'm going to go with that entry yet nice level of amp / dac with the Schiit Modi and Mangi 3+ (or maybe a liquid spark(?)). Hopefully you can answer my question but if not it's all good! The earpads have a lot of influence over the bass and treble. The default pads are just absolutely terrible. If you want a fuller sound with better bass and still having a good treble response, but without it being overbearing, you must replace the stock pads. At the very least the two leather variants from Dekoni blow the stock away. I'm still using some twelve year old JMoney lambskin pads that I previous purchased for the DT880s. Sadly, there hasn't been anything released since that sound as good. The Dekoni pads are a distant second best, but still blow away the stock pads. I will definitely look into the filters though. Sounds like a really good solution.

Im coming from the DT880 PRO, and now got the DT 1990 PRO and i have to say i never heard something like that. Its absolutely amazing quality and have only used the defualt pads. Its perfect to me. Seen a lot of people say its to high end, but it has to be very subjective to the hearing. I love it and am very surprised about the sound quality. The bass, mid and highs are perfect to me its just crazy!!! :D Probably also depends on what kind of gerne one listens to and also the production quality. Coming from the DT 880 Pro to the DT 1990 PRO is like, coming from a 720 pixel display to a 4K OLED display!

He was probably referring to him, and I also agree with the author of the video. I think all of those AutoEQ/Oratory1990 profiles go overboard with filters (especially above 10kHz even though they know their rigs are not so accurate above 8kHz usually). For example for the DT 1990 Pro just go over to audiosciencereivew - Amir did the review and made an EQ profile that is also Harman compliant and achieves better sound quality with less filters at least in my experience.

I've never had that issue before with open headphones. I have heard a few people talk about it. I had the Blue Yeti when I first started and it wasn't an issue. since then I've used dynamics instead of condensers and that is never an issue with a dynamic mic (unless you have your gain way too hot).

Well I can’t speak for the Drop 177x Go but the Dt 1990 are insane! I got mine 2 days ago and you can hear everything clearly where it is coming from, at least in Rainbow Six, CoD MW. The thing with these are that they are open back, they don’t isolate outside noise, which gives them more of a 3D sound and better orientation (at least that is what I read). The Build quality is impressive and the sound is just awesome on Music. Also: Right now I just use a GoXLR mini as a DAC and AMP and it is not really suited for it.

Hi, im new on ur channel and see now a few videos from ur headphone reviews but I’m a lil bit confused now. What do u recommended for Headphones now for games like Warzone, I only use headphones for music listening and gaming but more importantly is it for me, that I want to have one headphone with I can play games and to listening music great. I hate it a lot if I die in a game cause I don’t hear exactly from where the enemy’s coming. I want to hear, is he over me or under me is he left or right, better to say, where the fucking hell is he exactly. In one video from a last year from u, u say that the denon 7200 are the headphones to go, what u say now after a year? Have u a better headphone to recommended or are the 7200 still the way to go to? Oh and what I forget is, they need to be closed back headphones.
@gamingaudioguide9292
@gamingaudioguide9292 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the 7200's are still one of the elite gaming headphones but I do have a hard time recommending them. Many people find the top headband uncomfortable and you really have to replace the ear pads for elite performance. in your case, they are not a good fit as they are semi-closed and leak a lot of sound. The walnut is just not very isolating. For affordable closed backs you have some options depending on what you want to spend. I would check out the reviews I did on the 177X Go, 770 pro, MDR 7506 and Hyper X Alpha S. They all are closed and do movies, music and games well. The 770 pro needs EQ for most people though so the treble isn't so fatiguing. Thanks for checking out the content!

they can be a little tricky. first - if you are struggling, walk away for a few minutes rather than get too crazy with them lol. second, make sure they are warm. the vinyl surround is more pliable when warm vs cold even just a light touch (emphasis on LIGHT) with a blow-dryer set to warm will make them a little easier to work with. then start at the notch on the metal and use that to guide the outer edge. let me know if that doesn't help.

@@shanemaguire23 make sure in-game you are using "binaural sound". Don't use Comtacs - they are bugged. The cheapest headset in game (gssh or something like that) and sordin do best for footsteps. In Windows, under sound settings, make sure you have "spatial sound format" off. Make sure the device is at 48hz (same as what most games are mastered at). after that - how is the sound in the room you play in? if using open headphones, you would be surprised at how much a mini fridge, loud pc, electric heater, people talking in an adjacent room- any of that can really cover up small audio cues. If you have any of those things and can't change it, that's when you go for closed. Lastly - if none of that helps - they are likely listening at louder volumes. :)

@gamingaudioguide9292
@gamingaudioguide9292 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you mean. An older serial no. or older, as in the pads are worn? If the former, I have not found there to be great variance in serial as another tester has. I have measured 3 units, all within a reasonable degree of one another. As the pads wear, you will have a less peaky treble experience in most headphones as there is less reflection going on. However you also loose bass a bit, as there is then less air to push between the driver and your ear. You also tend to loose just a tad of imaging and stage as the driver gets closer to your ear. These variations are very hard to notice, especially for someone wearing them daily. In sum, if the treble bothers you new, you should use EQ or a passive filter. When the pads wear to the point of pancaking a bit - you should replace them.

Buying through a reputable distributor will alleviate most concerns. Beyer's service is okay in the states but pretty slow overall. The cap at the end of the headband is a normal weakness and pretty easy to find multiple instances of on reddit. Of course, none of this is to say I wouldn't recommend them.
