There has to be a preface of saying “I’m not a fan, I don’t like her singing, dancing, hair, or teeth and I actually prefer to listen to Jlo play the washing machine, but I kinda liked this one song.” Like, who is this for? Are we worried about praising a hardworking black woman too much? Don’t wanna give her too many compliments? Something about that just rubs me the wrong way.

Yes, Karen and I've been telling everyone this because I think this album isn't getting enough attention. Honestly, I haven't been a huge fan of anyone since I was a kid, maybe Beyoncé back in her "B'Day" era. But this album has so much depth! Songs like "American Requiem" reflect on the CMT awards incident within the context of broader issues facing the country. She also weaves in personal experiences as a daughter, mother, and wife, showcasing her growth and healing in all these roles in songs like Daughter, . Musically, it's a blend of country, rock and roll, rap, and even opera (my favorite part!). Fans see connections to her prior album, 'Renaissance,' suggesting a continuation of Black history themes. As a lifelong Black country music fan, I especially loved the surprise cameos and vignettes of Country legends welcoming her to the genre. I'm buying this album on record because I think we'll look back at it as a milestone in music history.

Beyonce has embraced her Black identity and how she's teaching the World the richness of our culture. She pays homeage to those who have paved the way, while simultaneously embracing and bringing up the next generation of artist is brilliant.
@bdhu20019 ай бұрын
This whole album is in response to how she was treated at CMA. American Requiem is telling them about themselves. She researched and it took over 5 years for her to develop this album. The album is full of history and reclaiming music that black people/ slaves started, but were kicked out of once it became popular. Blackbird was written by Paul McCartny to give black women/girls hope during the Civil Rights movement . He saw how they were being treated. That’s why all the singers on the song are black women. The others are four black female country singers. Let’s just point out that Country radio has an issue with playing black artists so Beyoncé told everyone about her new venture during the Super Bowl then dropped two country songs. The Bey Hive activated and most country stations played her music. But to top it off, her album is presented as it’s own radio station with country legends presenting her music. This Album was meant to be Act I. This was Beyoncé’s response to how she was treated at the CMA. The requiem funeral procession was trying to let us know that Country Music was rooted and started by blacks. If you look into the history, it started by people putting on black face for minstrel music making fun of the slaves with their banjos. Then people who are credited with starting country, came to black street artists to learn their craft. Once it became big, black people were pushed aside and they started gate keeping the genre. Same thing happened with rock & roll, jazz, blues, and many of the genres that are considered to have been started in America. Thus, Beyoncé is reclaiming all of the music that we’ve been kicked out of that we helped create. It’s why this album delves into all those genres and ends with her buckin breaking down walls and asking if we can hear her now. Then she says that we are the ones who have to clean ourselves of our father’s sins to end the funeral procession .
@coles13119 ай бұрын
African Americans aren’t the sole creators of Country music. They definitely contributed especially by introducing America to the banjo but Irish, Scottish, and English immigrants were just as important in the creation as African Americans. Blues and Rock n Roll are 95% fully African American creations but not country.
@bdhu20019 ай бұрын
@@coles1311 Please read again, I said helped create. Read the full thing. Music is evolving and American music comes from all the cultures that came to America. I said the Banjo and the man who is credited for creating Country music got that from black people. Hank Williams Sr, said everything he learned was from a black street musician. It’s not about taking credit, it’s about no one should gate keep others, who also had a part on creating it. If you look at history of music in America, there are plenty of times where entire songs were lifted straight from black artists and then played on white stations with white artists playing them. Just letting you guys know that Beyoncé is giving a history lesson and historical perspective, not just music. The term Cow-boy was a derogatory term. It meant “go get that cow boy.” Because that running around and wresting with the animals was left to slaves and later black folks. Later John Wayne and westerns came around to change the term into rugged he-men. As I said the banjo was made fun of and used with black face in minstrel shows, but people enjoyed the music so when they got rid of the black face , they kept the banjo and began to segregate the music.
@coles13119 ай бұрын
@@bdhu2001 I’m well aware of the history of African American music. I feel like now people are mistakenly classing country in the same category as blues and rock n roll in saying that’s it’s also a genre that white people stole from African Americans. White people definitely stole Blues and Rock n Roll with most not even giving credit to the black artists at the time. I don’t think country is the same. Every country music history book I’ve read has mentioned the importance of African American’s in the creation of country music. The main painting in the Country Music Hall of Fame has a depiction of an African American playing banjo on it. I understand that there weren’t many famous African American country artists until Darius Rucker but there were only a handful of African American country artists until the last 15-20 years. Darius Rucker and Kane Brown have had consistent success in the genre. Hank Williams Sr. definitely progressed the genre the most but country was already started by the time Hank came on the scene. The first country recording is credited to be in the 1930s in Bristol, TN. America’s racism was the main cause of the points you’ve made and it’s a shame that period of time happened, but I think Beyoncé has been getting too much credit with this one. She’s not pioneering or opening any closed doors because African American country artists have been around for 15 years now, Charlie Pride was an African American country star in the 1960s and current country hall of fame member. I don’t think the ones who actually broke the barriers and opened the door are getting the same credit as Beyoncé. Beyoncé was always going to come out of this scenario on top simply because it’s 2024 and the new generation isn’t as close minded as past generations, it’s also at a time when country music is at its biggest in decades with shows like Yellowstone making country culture the new hip trend.

@@coles1311 But you’ve added words to my statement. I simply said music that they helped create. You’re making your point on the wrong post. That’s all I’m saying. @coles13119 ай бұрын
@@bdhu2001 Well my initial comment was directed at your statement in paragraph four, “The Requiem funeral Profession was trying to let us know that Country Music was rooted and started by blacks”. The statement sounded like you credited the full creation to African Americans even though now I know that was not your intention with the statement. However I still feel that sharing context to keep whoever may read this thread informed is important. I’m not adding to your post to prove my point, I’m adding to your post to show the full facts of the topic. Your statements, “Reclaiming music that black people/ slaves started, but were kicked out of once it became popular”, and, “Beyoncé is reclaiming all of the music that we’ve been kicked out of that we helped create” is why I said Beyoncé is getting too much credit. Every one of these genres has already been reclaimed by black artists, giving Beyoncé credit for this is simultaneously stealing that credit from the black artists that actually broke those barriers. Lastly your statement, “Country Radio has an issue with playing black artists”, is also not true. While I’m certain there are probably some racists that hold power in country music, country radio has been playing black artists for years now as I discussed in my previous comment. I don’t have any personal vendetta against you, I just want to make sure that full facts of history are available to whomever may read this.

I've always known she was talented and I've liked her radio hits, but never really felt compelled to dive deeper. Gotta say the whole "country" angle was pretty genius "marketing" (the media was complicit in this facile framing - it's not solely a country album at all). There is a market for country fans who are fed up with the racist, nationalist, "try [being black] in a small town" nonsense that has plagued it for decades. That was what hooked me in. I love hearing about the backstory and links to her previous work. I am now compelled to check out her entire catalogue.

I have one CD by Beyonce that's on repeat play. "4". It's probably her ONLY POP CD with "Love on Top" in the mix. It's IMO her best CD. But this Carter CD may be my favorite. I'm a buyer.

Beyonce's Carter CD is NOT strictly purely C&W. She has some pop-ish songs as well as C&W.

Why do people feel the need to make a huge distinction of how much of a fan you are of someone? Stan culture has really ruined those simple conversations. Of course you are allowed to not be a fan of someone. The issue is when its not critique but bashing just to bash. Like people who claim not liking the Beatles is some sort of flex. Like they are one of the cool kids because of it. If you appreciate Bey as an artist, understands she is a talent and she somehow resonates then sometimes thats all thats needed.

No, No Ms. Kyla, we should not care if yt people like Queen B or not or want to co-sign. It does not give the imaginary, unnecessary, knot to her belt of legitimacy. I hope that black artist do not even pay attention to that because Queen B is like you and Dr. Karen. She came out the womb a Queen, she does her craft, creates content like a Queen does and she makes her people proud to be melanated just like when you two compare notes and convene as you do. The “THEY” have had 500 years to figure out how to join us (B1). Apparently they still haven’t (well, a lot of them haven’t, and some have). Let’s be clear, no one outside of our culture gets to co-sign our culture. That task is left to us. Ase’

Country music use to be called Country Blues in the south. Example is Memphis Minnie who is the Queen of Country Blues. Now if you are from Louisiana you would call it country blues or swamp blues. Example Papa Charlie Jackson was a country blues songster from Louisiana. If you are from the Midwest it was called country western, which reflected the country blues scene of Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Indiana, and Illinois. It wasn't called country music until 1949 when the industry saw it marketable. I call Cowboy Carter a declaration to the exploitation of black contribution to country music.

No butt shaken no screaming pretending it’s singing, no nudity no cult following or rabid fans. Just good music no synthesize sounds. Real musicians playing real musical instruments. No Alvin and the chipmunks sounding computer noise. Just Valerie June’s fabulous vocals and great music.

We are behind as a community because these conversations are still stuck 55 years ago doing civil rights when it’s the political system that needs dismantling. It’s still all about race instead of politics/ laws, even after Battalora came on the show and told us how it started in the laws. These are our leading thinkers. Progress shall be SLOOOOOWWWWW this way, if any is made at all. And after Rhianna gave Chris Brown Sean Carter’s herpes when Chris was 19 and tried to destroy that young man, and then she has had babies with that ASAP rocky character that doesn’t have the sense to know laws vary country to country screaming self-defense in Sweden, I have little belief in her beyond being very talented musically and in business. Rhianna linked up with a bone head. That’s her level. Like water she found it.

How do you know how complex I think it is? Tuh
@SheRisen1019 ай бұрын
Cowboy Carter isn't that complex for most black people. We understand that black people invented things and they have been claimed by others. We understand that others benefit more from what we create than we do. We also understand that the black people with money win, the white rich folks running country music is about to get way richer because of an already rich black woman. We are indeed happy for Beyonce because of how the ring leaders of country music did her. We also know that Mickey Guyton might not win like Beyonce, Oprah AND Tanner Adell. Just saying. Blackbird is ❤.

Millie Jackson did country music albums long before beyonce was born. Why do folks act like the world started in 2000? THERE IS NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN. When did bigotry come into music? No one owns sound. Except for maybe African drum rhythms with bass and a beat, cause that’s how we do 😂💃🏿🪘 I am not a Beyoncé fan. I like one song she had out. She is a good entertainer. A billionaire should put on a good and thoughtful show. Everyone loves her but black ppl made her. She should be conscientious of that in her art. More celebrities should remember the mule that brought them up to the mountain and let that reflect in their “creations”. Karen Hunter you are the best person in media. It has been over ten years on Sirius before that I listened to you back in the day in NYC. I think it was WWRL or WLIB?? (The station was only on from sunrise to sundown and the played the black National anthem in the 1990.) Not sure. 🤦🏽♀️ Anyway… Things have changed over time but your dedication to the human and social issues is the same. You are still my bff in my head and heart. Have you noticed that on the album cover of Cowboy Carter, the "white" horse is heading backwards while BEYONCÉ is headed forward with the American flag?!! Essentially Beyoncé is a flagbearer; by definition, a person who encourages an idea or value and starts to represent it ( cambridge dictionary). Apt metaphor for white/country music Ameriica and BIPOC!! In the words of Maya Angelou...And still we RISE!!
