I enjoy games that start us off with a heavy commitment of time dedicated to something like oxygen here, and then tech that makes it become less of an issue over time freeing us up to spend that time in other areas. Sounds like this game hit it right with you considering that but then presenting the solution to fix it.

Actually reminds me of No Man’s Sky, with the scanning, bold colours, sound effects. Even the GUI font is similar. The Voice Actress is familiar too…

So yea i was inspired by Splats video and i played the game for like 4 hours now. From what i can tell it is like if you took Don't Starve, made it SCI-Fi, added bunch of other things and slapped a story on top of it. And well... that is actually a pretty great thing!! Collecting materials feels the same. Fighting feels the same, its not best but its workable. Progression seams similar as well where you have to collect some rarer materials to go up the research tiers. Obviosly items are different since it is different setting and aparently there is also some more complex baseduilding. There are also Quest giving NPCs.. and well the game has a lot going for it. There is also that constant pressure of early game being a bit tough time pressure wise, you run around mostly making sure your oxygen and food stays healthy. I have some gripes though. I would actually like to read the story elements in peace, but game does not pause so if you wona do so you have to pay some oxygen task for it.. so in a way if you wona play optimal you would skip all the story dialogue... which is a shame. It is voice acted and all. Also Voice acting just cuts of if she comments on something like being on low oxygen or similar. It is an early access game so i am sure they will polish there gripes and i am expecting we will have a pretty amazing games in our hands if they finish it. So fingers crossed! After my adventure abrutly ended by walking into an anomaly I decided i will record my next try and i will upload an hour long video of non cut gameplay every 2 days. In case it wasn't said already, you can fill your oxygen up all the way at the gas vents by just holding down left mouse button when you first click it

That actually sounds like a glitch to me. Why would that even be a thing. Why not give back all the oxygen right away from just a single click.

@@ruvadar i tried it out and my oxygen went to 100 and started flashing and stayed at 100 for 2 minutes even after i moved from the bouble. I managed to get it going down instantly again by clicking on a new bouble. Just clicking. Also there is like a LOT of these oxygen vents and they do replenish with time so yea air is trickling out all the time but after you harvest the majority of it the litle that remains should not be of any use at that point anway. And if you let it alone for a day or so it builds up again and can be used again. That is my interpretation anyway. But anway it is just a game if somebody wants to remove the mechanic alltogether and just relax and play i guess its fair game. Until they patch it anyway which i think they should. Thank you for mentioning it though it is good to be aware of it :).

I agree like 100 percent. I actually called it: "Beyond Contact, Science Fiction version of Don't Starve with NPCs and Story Elements? Yes please!". Because thats just what it is, like a SCI-FI version of Don't Starve. Obviosly it has its own thing going as well but comparison is hard to avoid.

DONT STARVE NEEDS A SEQUEL, STAT!!! Hamlet, was cool …but; 1. Don’t Starve: IN SPACE! :Obviously what you hinted at…instead of don’t starve being limited to a world with teleports, make it more like NoManssky but smaller universe, than that game. Craft spaceship to leave world and visit new ones, with randomly generated plants and animals - with each world having your basic core of each, and then like 5-10 other sources that can be randomdigitized’ stats and mats. For instance, randomly generated tree with mats being wood+fish….just make an animation that simulates a wiggly fish, and they hang from the tree, in game. Or a creature with a turtle body and a flower growing out of top, killing it yields meat and sticks and a flower. 2. Character/Swapping: Need to have a game system where using a certain character, allows doing something in game that no one else can do (but this will require a new craft-able thing maybe called a ‘Transmorforpicator’! Let’s you change your character into another character. Of course have them locked and need to unlock, using gameplay. 3. Updated mobs + flora and minerals, but keep most already there. Just add extra like Hamlite’ a fleshy colored metal. 4. Add new weather conditions and storms, updated with the randomized, for creating cool new worlds. Hey, if I can do it, and I’m not a coder, I’m sure any software designer can make a cool world generator. New weather could be like, silica rain, that damaged buildings not reinforced with a silica shell (craftable item that will be introduce…. That can be “added” to an exsisting item or structure. Or possibly “Hamlet Fog”, a smelly sweat&bacon tinged fog, that turns the air into a thing that transforms you into a pig for a short period, unless ‘Gaseous Maskeous’ is worn. Fish Tornados, moving through landscape, that removes coatings from structures, sends fish flying all over, that melt in the heat and creates “death clouds” that require gas mask. ‘Green Snow’, just use exsisting snow graphics but change the hue to a greenish tint, the snow covers everything like winter does, but happens only every 4 days, slows characters, mask required after melt, etc….just make cool stuff. 5. Daytime/Nightime. Introduce different time changes on different worlds, most will be normal day/night…. But have some that have a TWILIGHT period, able to introduce new creatures, flora, minerals, weather…or DOUBLE-DAY, when the two sins of a two sun system focus their energy on one day, burning everything not coated in whatever substance game designed add. Even require a double day suit. Perhaps wood doesn’t burn on some worlds… 6. Hobby/Talent: introduce a hobby system, much like RPG classes, except you get them all (all in game classes). You level them up through successfully using the class skills, and experience points. Hobbies like Scout (like Boy Scouts, general survival skills), Biologist, Chemistry, Alchemy, Woodwooker, masonry, dancing (increase movement and combat skills), singing (gather pets class), Astronaut (increase spaceship travel and scanning new worlds), Scientist (scan worlds, and flora/crits/minerals), Miner, Axeman, etc. 7. New Creatures, Flora, Minerals & Chemistry. Like fish that breath little fireballs, kangaroos with guns/lasers), Elephotomis (Elephant and a Rhino), Burtle (turtle and a bird), etc

I think they may have nailed the No Man's Sky aesthetic too well. Instead of seeing it for what it is, I see it as No Man's Sky on one planet with no ship.

I love this artstyle! Also, I'm always happy to see sci fi games like this that don't take an hour to get going and overload you with lore. I love games with deep lore, don't get me wrong, but I don't want to have it all thrown at me up front.

I think Dark Souls set the standard for dealing with lore of staggering depth and not overloading the player. I'd say they even went the opposite way--just enough to set the scene, but cryptic enough to where you're unsettled by what you don't know. Naturally not the ideal for EVERY game, but absolutely perfect for that series. Very well thought out.

The problem with not shoving down lore down your throat is that if you really like the story then you'll not be able to experience it to a fuller extent if the game deliberately tells you "just enough". There's a fine line and you really need to know the audience and be creative about the storytelling methods.

The crafting from chests sold me. Its one of my favorite minecraft mods. And the only other game I know that kinda auto grabs stuff so you're not having to carry it in your inventory is the survival its. And its only a partial feature

Ima bit confused. Seems to have a back story, why is it "sandbox"? Reminds me a bit of Subnautica without the water so far. Will there be any combat?

Yea progression has a similar feel to Subnautica. Its Sandbox until you decide to progress the story by going to next objective. The feel is different though since it is isometric obviosly. There is combat, enemies do not fallow you around so you can easily avoid them at least early on. Not sure for later on but there are definatly things to swing at if that is what you wish. To me this game is mechanic wise most similar to Don't Starve but i like the estethics of it way more. And it seams like there is some complex base building later on so it might diverege there. Oh and it has a workable story at least in my opinion. Anyway if you are on the edge I will put out an hour or so gameplay every two days so check it out if you like. Search for "Beyond Contact" (DUH!) on my channel :). Have a nice day :D.

@@TheNeomare I was really sure, sandbox means no-story-free-roaming-around-the-map. Glad there is a real story though. Don't starve was really boring, I never got the hype. Bought it for under 5 bucks, still regret it. But maybe its one of those games you gotta play in CoOp!

But by your definition it is definatly not a sandbox then and i would tend to agree with that definition. And in my book it is a huge plus because i like stories :). Don't Starve was a decent game. As for the hype haha thats the beast of its own. Played it a bit nothing to special. Have high hopes for this one though :).

Not sure if this will help any people who are interested in space crafting theme games, but I played No Man's Sky for the first time this week (after years and years of patches and free updates); and I must say it really ticks the space, mining, building, research, travel, explore, craft, mysterious plot, and tech tree boxes. But it meets all those criteria with like an A+++. All the while the plot, advancinh tech and story keeps you moving and exploring new places. I highly recommend fans of the crafting genre to check it out
