Thanks for presenting Eco Restoration on Facing Future. I recall seeing the Eco Restoration project several years ago, and am pleased it's going well. Long may it continue. It's only the beginning. It's a good beginning.

We must realize that tipping points have been passed and that we cannot stop these changes at this point. Honesty must be a part of our understanding that we came to the table too late, far too late...
@maddogwillie1019Ай бұрын
Really Jane, we need to make wise choices before it to late….hell wise or not we have made the choice…and doing nothing is it… we aren’t even going to consider other path… COP wasn’t a failure, it did exactly what it was setup to do…each country got the make the same unrealistic goal as the big boys do…that way no one’s to blame… The car is off the cliff and the ground is coming up fast…and we still have a large % of the population in America that are arguing there is no cliff. At this point the best a person can do is come to terms with the reality that we have left future generations a life of pain.

The greatest difference between humans and other animals is greed. We are driven for more, more, more. Better, better, better. Easier, easier, easier. Our intellect is a result of trying to satisfy that greed.
@GruntKFАй бұрын
Not all humans behave in such a manner, it depends on the frameworks we've adopted. Many of us adopt the frameworks of the dominant status quo, which are rather backwards indeed, but it is no fault of humankind but the systems they are beholden to imo
@ecocentrichomestead6783Ай бұрын
@@GruntKF While there is variation for all traits, including greed, humans built those systems. While there are some that aspire to live on very little, most humans have greed to a noticeable degree.
@GruntKFАй бұрын
@@ecocentrichomestead6783 well sure, but if one has only ever seen an elephant doing tricks in a circus one could conclude that elephants naturally perform tricks. we have greed because we are socialized to and are materially rewarded for it by a dominant status quo. if you change the incentives (for example, sufficiency rather than competition for one) then behavior changes as well. all behavior is driven by incentives
@ecocentrichomestead6783Ай бұрын
@@GruntKF It's an evolution thing, but that takes some teaching to understand. Greed is why we left the trees. We were looking for something more.
@ia8018Ай бұрын
@@ecocentrichomestead6783 when we left the trees we were not humans, therefore, greed is not a human thing but a living being thing.

It has always been up to us. When you keep going to these pointless meetings, you empower those who are in charge of it and in the pocket of fossil fuels.

They want to burn my Forest down. I need some income not for myself but for local people to remove trees and store carbon and prevent fire without actually having to have fire. I don't want your money but I would like it if somebody gave a handful of young people some money to restore this previously clear-cut Forest. Under my supervision we would selectively cut down trees that are prime to deliver fire to the canopy. In the winter off season they would use that wood to build homes and other structures for the tribal people who have been so abused by our society. This is my goal and this is what I'm working on but the forest service wants to have "a prescribed burn"(ie wildfire) instead. I am certain that with your help I can sequester hundreds of thousands if not millions of tons of CO2 while providing resources to people who have been burned long before the rest of us.

I do find it telling that the oil industry lobbyists advocate for COP to be ended. Leaving it in the hands of individuals is never the answer. Collective action is all that works. That has always been the prime strategy of the oil industry and linked industries like plastic, to externalize costs. Putting the responsibility on individuals only leaves things open for them to do whatever they want, by buying governments. From local level to national - The right approach is to empower representatives that are willing to take the right actions. Who will not let themselves be bought by industry.

We are, and will be for many decades, in the grip of predatory capitalism and mindless consumption. As I do for my 3 children and 3 grandchildren, I feel for all of the young people alive now as they have been left with a legacy of greed and misdirection that has not allowed them to see clearly where they are being led. As skeptical as I am about the remainder of this century I am nevertheless thankful for everyone who is trying. Hopefully, the 22nd century will be a stand out for sanity in business and government.

It was always up to us. Even if it was "the governments responsibility", it is up to us to vote in the party that will take on that responsibility.

Conference of the Parties (in this case) is a meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) There is also a Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity; so far there have been 16 of those.

All fine, but fortunately population will start un decrease too, that's the demographic trend. Less consumption and less people...human population size does matter in a finite planet. Also we will have to make do with dwindling fossil fuels so population size does matter! We have tw learn to tighten our belts more than usual in the meantime if we want generations into the future to enjoy our remaining planet!
