I have rewatched the show multiple times and still do. I especially love rewatching this episode, particularly the moments between Tim and Jackson. Just two nights together and Jackson felt understood, comfortable and safe around Tim than with his whole family and trusted him so much in so little time. Loved their friendship. Also, it was interesting how imo the roles are somewhat reversed between Hawk and Tim here that for the first 5 episodes through the 50s, it was Tim who really wanted to be with Hawk and Hawk felt the same way and reciprocated but was more concerned with being vigilant and protecting himself. Here, it's clear that Hawk needed Tim like with how he kept tabs on him as Marcus said and gave him a safe haven in his hunting cabin and how much he wanted to keep him out of prison and stay so he'd be close by so he could be with him if Tim wanted him to. That's the reversal how Tim did his best not to fall so easily for Hawk again and left. Tim had grown since the 50s even though he did want to be with Hawk, he didn't want to come between him and his family. I do wish he stayed for Jackson though. Heartwarming how Tim's time with Jackson helped mend his and Hawk's father-son relationship.

1. The first 1968 scene concerns the Vietnam War, when there was a draft of eligible American men. The anti-war protesters are taking and burning draft records. 2. Hawk is trying to be a good father according to the rules of his class and time, but he labors under the huge handicap of never having had a positive relationship with his own father. The character of Jackson is one of the many felicitous additions to the original novel by Thomas Mallon: his storyline is heartwrenching and deepens the stories of Lucy and Hawk as well.

I wouldn't say that Hawk is a bad father. Yes, he and Jackson had trouble connecting, but at least we saw Hawk trying. And throughout the whole episode we saw that Kimberly loves Hawk and seems really close with him. If he was a bad father indeed, she wouldn't be so close with him. We also saw her in episode 1 at the garden party and she and Hawk seem to have a good relationship then (in 1986) as well. Hawk is a man of his time through and through, who was deeply traumatized by his own father and by the war... Generational trauma at its best 😥 Both Hawk and Marcus are quite a bit older than their lovers. They have both been to war and have established careers in their fields by the time Tim and Frankie show up in their lives. They have a lot more to lose than Tim and Frankie by comparison. It's not surprising that both of them would try harder to keep up the facades that they have built for themselves for so long.

I think what Hawk's trying to create in this episode is the missing emotional intimacy. He can't have that with Lucy and he also can't have that with his hook ups. And it's this intimacy that Tim's denying him here.

Notice how Tim prays for forgiveness of his impure thoughts about Hawk, but not about violating their marriage? What did Tim hope to come out of sending that letter to Hawk? He's a married man now. Lucy had the right to burn it..
