Dutiful is a better term than Compliant IMO. Ones are not compliant, they are dutiful in their approach to other people, just because that is the greater good, not to appease or win acceptance as compliance would imply. They will be dutiful even if that makes them unpopular, e.g. picking up litter around a dirty park bin even though they have been scolded by their parents for touchingother people's dirty litter. They have decided it is tye right thing to do which means their inner critic will bully them into doing it no matter what anyone thinks. On an important related tangent, I also believe that the evidence is conclusive now that we are born as morality-deriving beings, not taught to fake it til we make it feel like our own, as the learned morality theory held. Moral feelings about situations are based on the ratio of compassion and disgust you naturally produce, combined with whih background factual data you are processing situation with. E.g. if the data (can be true or false data, it feels the same) that you have taken in for the time being, is "the Bible is dictated to scribes by a being who understands and knows everything and is always purely good" then "I ought to obey the Bible even if I don't understand the reason for some of the rules, I must trust them cos they understand everything and I don't" is a logical reaction, not based on mindlessly copying others' feeling but on independently deriving the same feeling from the same data as they did long ago, cos human brains work similarly. Non psychopathic humans are born ready to react to certain types of data input with the two emotions that cause morality in our brains: compassion and disgust. Disgust gets triggered in older children and adults - both human and chimps - by familiar stimuli in unfamilar contexts or arrangements. Hence right wing morality is focused upon eradicating unfamiliar ways of doing familiar (whatever that was in their early life experience) things. The relative strength of these two emotions determines whether we have more left wing or right wing moral reactions to social situations when the data input is identical. Hence some whose data changes, to "the Bible is not all dictated by such a being" react with relief that they can start supporting same sex romance, as they always felt pained by not understanding why the all-knowing one claimed it was harmful without saying why, while others, who on brain scans show a high degree of disgust reactions and lower compassion, never felt conflicted about it. The disgust and compassion strength ratio is genetic and can be changed by brain damage or severe attachment failure in infancy from chronic abuse or neglect. Not what we are told to feel being told how to feel has no impact. If you feel the same as your parents about morality it does not mean you are an inherently amoral being who had to copy others until you somehow felt the feelings for real, that is such a sad misanthropic way to see yourself and all babies. It is just because they used the same factual data (true or false data you did not know, it was just what you had) as you, and had a similar genetically determined ratio of compassion and disgust. You did not mindlessly copy their emotional reactions as a blank slate born lacking morality, contrary to the very upsetting popular misconception that we were all born without morality like psychopaths and just arbitrarily copy compassion until we feel it for real. We are born moral and caring and loving, plus chaotic other instincts like self-preservation and territoriality that make us act the opposite at times. We do not learn either our pro-social or aggressive emotions, they are all instinctive. Parents and religious leaders need to stop telling us that we are born psychopaths that need to be brainwashed into experiencing pro social urges, cos it negatively affects how we approach parenting when we see babies as essentially psychopaths needing reform. Wow epic thesis of a comment there but please take that as a compliment, I felt compelled to share where I disagree cos it is interesting and the delivery is engaging.
