This reaction video to the classic jazz standard My Funny Valentine as covered by the brilliant artist Angelina Jordan is an experiment I have waited for some time to carry out. I always wanted to know what it would be like to hear Angelina Jordan perform without seeing her perform. So I did this Angelina Jordan Reaction two times, one without the video and one with the video. I hope you like my reaction to Angelina Jordan covering My Funny Valentine even though you might not agree with my conclusions. In this case I prefer listening to Angelina Jordan without the video. I think I get too distracted by the imagery to really appreciate and catching all the details in this extraordinary performance of My Funny Valentine by Angelina Jordan.

Pontus, sixteen year old, Angelina took a song that was written in 1937, covered by over six hundred singers, changed the arrangement and put forth the perfect, consummate and mic drop performance that IMO, can not be sung any better, except by Angelina, of course.

“So much going on in the vocals.” Amen! Yes, this is one for the ears more than the eyes. Just extraordinary, otherworldly singing and vocal beauty. Those last few phrases, and as you say, that last note, just mind-blowing. Best singing of the word “day” ever, at the end. I knew you’d be bowled over by this one!

three years ago, I wrote, that I'm looking forward to the day she turns into a woman, predicting an even more outstanding voive and personality. But honestly, I did not expect her to be so good at the age of 16. For me , the best female voice of present time, and very likely far into the future.

Good evening Pontus, my name is Silas, I'm Brazilian and I'm a doctor, at age 63 I like jazz for many years, but Angelina in this specific song, works with two human senses, vision and hearing, the song My Funny Valentine, was composed in 1936 and when you see Angelina filming in that antique shop you transport yourself to the past and that is fantastic, and like in Japanese cuisine, a dish to be refined has to work with the taste, the smell and the look of the food these three senses together make that food an indescribable pleasure. In this song Angelina used her genius to explore our senses. So for me My Funny Valentine only has two versions that I love: Angelina Jordam's and Sara Vaughan's live from 1969. Thank you

Pontus, you may be the only reactor that mentioned Angelina's potential acting career. From day one, I saw this potential and IMO, probability, that Angelina's career will not be limited to singing. Just like taking on an iconic song and turning it into her own, Angelina may very well see acting as a natural extension of her performance skills. Such a thought, arguably the greatest singer in the world today, and a once painfully shy little girl finds additional fulfillment on the silver screen. With the connections that Republic Records has, this may happen sooner rather than later. Now, wouldn't that be so much fun to see her in a musical, a drama, or a comedy?

A proper experiment Pontus, similar to what I experienced after discovering Angelina. As I spoke about in my podcast episode, during the first few months of watching Angelina videos, often my brain would ache because I couldn't understand how such a voice with remarkable vocal talent could be coming from such a young girl. Once I bought a pair of good headphones and started listening and not watching the video, then my Angelina experience reached new heights. Great job with all the links to Angelina and to the podcast in the description of this video. I encourage all angels to introduce Angelina to more people when you are able.

Angelina's voice never ceases to amaze, whether a coach, seasoned pro, enthusiaast, or a non talent like me. I don't know how I knew that Angelina was that special from the first song I ever heard her sing. All I knew was that my being stood at attention, this voice was performing in a way not normally heard, at least by me. Been hooked ever since. Very nice excerpts from season one of "Wrapped In A Warm Blanket". Kudos, Pontus, much respect.

No matter how familiar you are with Angelina, there's is always a wave of surprise, yet familiarity, one gets when she sings the first few notes in a new recording. It's as if you are automatically snapped into that special world of hers. I can feel my blood pressure go down the minute she opens her mouth. She is medicine. I agree with you in this video, the visuals are beautiful, as is she, but they don't add anything to the music. I do love to watch her sing, though. It's enthralling!😎

I appreciate the videos, even the live onstage performances because it adds another sense to the entire experience. And, I appreciate finding the hidden gems that Angelina tends to leave in her videos, like the Screaming Jay candle, or the cellphone photo of her grandfather, which helps us understand her motives for her interpretations. Or, how easy and relaxed she feels and portrays when performing. I've been trying to understand why she has permitted her grandmother and others to chronicle her life and remarkably share it with others. It's almost indicative of a mission, one certainly not out of vanity but to somehow use herself as an model of how we can grow as humans.

The extent that Angelina's family, especially her mom Sara and uncle Michael, will go in order to make sure she appears as a proper young girl, is perfectly illustrated by this presentation. Had she done it 'live' in this setting, this viewing would have associated her to a that of a 'sultry' female performing the song, which is perfectly fine for an adult, but not for a young girl of 16 in her family's eyes. By over dubbing her vocals, she can still be viewed meandering through a collection of furniture and chandeliers while she appears to simply imagine all that's occurring in the video our eyes are taking in. There is no way for anyone to mistakenly believe she is presenting herself as anything other than a beautiful young girl, day dreaming as the lyrics play out.

This is my 92nd time listening to this MASTERPIECE and each time I experience a new level of perfection by our ethereal prodigy extraordinaire, Angelina Jordan. When you listen to the A cappella portions of this performance at the very end of the song you are truly experiencing the genius of Angelina Jordan’s PERFECT PITCH. Sinatra, rest in peace Angelina Jordan, the Bare Foot Queen has taken the crown and there is nothing like her in the universe. When I first heard her perform this I put it on pause and brought up Sinatra, Bublé, Streisand, Fitzgerald and Vaughan's version of this song to compare it to AJ version, and none of them moved me like this version. It is so hard to comprehend that Angelina from 7 to 16 is the greatest story telling being in my 74 years of experiencing great vocalist and I can't wait for the rest of the story.

How did you manage to hold out for a month and a half before listening this song, Pontus? Wonderful reaction of course. Angelina has always been extremely moving when she sang this song, even with vocal skills yet to be developed, but this time she exudes a sweetness, balance and harmony that make this interpretation absolutely superlative and timeless. Her re-reading of this song is truly magical and fascinating for me, she is growing wonderfully and we are lucky enough to see her improve more and more. I fear that in Norway in July it will be the festival of great emotion and tears for us fans. 💛 🧡 ❤️

Carrie and I completely agree. Just did the A/B comparison with you. The audio-only version is a profoundly different experience. We'll go video-less for a while to enjoy these myriad nuances as you described. Must admit that Carrie was a couple months ahead of us on this one. The video is brilliant. Perhaps it is the definition of 'Brilliant'. IMO if you gave an iPhone and a half hour to George Kokur, Vincent Minelli or even Busby Berkely, like your poster in the background ('Babes in Arms' - Great Judy & Mickey movie!) I doubt they cold make a better video, color grading and all. Then there's the subject herself. She's brilliant. Every day she's our Valentine. Thanks for this video Pontus.

Great reaction Pontus. Two listens is not enough though. I’d watch and listen to this from a hidden camera under one of the sofas, behind her, drone footage, Goodyear blimp image or as just another face in the crowd at her concert. Could she do anything she wants with her career? YES! Acting as the daughter of an important world figure that is kidnapped and rescued by James Bond. Shield would be a fantastic choice for the theme and the movie title. She could be a writer, model, producer, director, or head of a charity for children. So many possibilities, but as long as she keeps singing that’s all I need. Thanks again from Alaska.

Pontus, "Hello, again!" I "listened" and "watched" your entire video and I had second thoughts about responding to it. But, it took courage for you to present this idea to us and so I will try my best to comment about it. I'm going to create a situation which will describe my feelings about the visual version. But, before I do I have to say, the "listening" version did, in fact, do exactly as you said. There is so much going on vocally in the song, every note Angelina sings is totally absorbed by a listener and, in a word, her performance is magnificent! Okay, here's the situation I created to express my feelings about the visual. A husband and his wife are sitting in the living room of their home, waiting for their daughter to come down the stairs from her room. It's the night of her Senior Prom and mom and pop are very happy, nervous, excited, etc., You get the idea. Okay, she appears at the top of the stairs and starts to slowly walk down into the living room. Mom and pop both get to their feet, smiling, crying, etc., You get the idea. She looks gorgeous! Her dress is new and she almost seems to be someone other than their daughter. We can fast forward now except to pause for the moment when the young man and pop exchange "glances" and a few words. To describe that moment as being awkward is an understatement. Off they go. Mom and pop sit back down on the sofa. They are quiet in thought until pop utters the following. "Honey, she looked gorgeous, but I didn't like the dress too much." Mom seemed startled. "What?", she replied. "Her dress is perfect. What are you talking about? How can you say such a thing?" At a loss for words, he replies, "I don't know. Just something about it." She continued, "Aren't you happy for her? Don't you want her to enjoy the evening? She looked absolutely beautiful!" He took her words very personally and knew he had to get things straightened out. "Honey, what are you talking about? I love my daughter with all my heart. I will do anything for her to make her happy and always be near whenever she needs me. Honey, all I'm saying is I just didn't like the dress so much. Of course I will never tell her that. I'm sorry, Just being honest with you." Mom nudged up to pop, gave him a kiss on the cheek. "That's okay, dear. You don't know anything about dresses so I'll let you get away with that." She smiled. She went on, "Let's watch a little TV. Then, we'll go to bed a little earlier than usual?" He replied, "Are you kidding? My eyes will not be closing until my daughter comes home. And, I will not admit to her I was waiting for her to come home. I'll tell her I couldn't sleep and just came downstairs to have a snack and something to drink. And I'll ask her if she would like to join me." She smiled. "Okay, what are we going to watch on TV. Don't tell me another basketball game?" They both laughed......................... Pontus, the video was very interesting, definitely something very different but I have to admit I am always somewhat uncomfortable when I watch it. Example: Toward the end of the song, when Angelina walks to the back of the store, she turns around and then sits down on a chair. I don't believe she landed on a soft cushion because it looked like she almost bounced up off the chair. And, how about the camera angles during the video? Depending on the shot her eyes appeared blue or dark. I'm going to bet it's 50-50 on which her adoring 'angels' prefer. All of this, in my opinion, compromised her efforts because all the attention was not on the music. I very much appreciate the uniqueness of the video but I prefer listening to it.

@@ronjones1077 I don’t think that is a studio edit at that point. I used to work on projects similar to this and a couple of things stand out to me. Plus obviously the brick wall ending where the audio cuts out. I may be entirely wrong and we might see changes if it’s ever released commercially. But there again some people may not even notice it then. It’s just us sound engineer types that get wrapped up in this sort of thing.

I agree Pontus, I find the video is interesting, since I always enjoy watching Angelina, but I find it distracting from the music. My 1st choice is to see her singing live, but if it's a slide show or her hanging out in an antique shop like this, I can't listen as carefully to all the vocal details, so I close my eyes.

Hi Pontus, Enjoyed your reactions to My Funny Valentine. I have listened to it many, many times and still enjoy is softness, emotional impact, and artistry like you. Looking forward to meeting you in Norway this summer at her concert. Crazy, but I will be coming from Los Angeles, and am delighted to make the trip, see Norway, and experience Angelina in person in her original country. Looking forward to meeting you this summer. Thanks again for your very thoughtful and touching reaction. For me, I particularly love that ever so brief instance at the end when she looks directly into the camera. It takes my breath away. It is like she knows how much we love her and appreciate her as she continues to mature and improve as a singer and artist.

I always look forward to your take on AJ, and this reaction delivered as always Pontus. Every time I watch her latest version, I can't stop seeing that single, solitary emerald hanging from the chandelier as a metaphor for AJ herself. I may also be seeing things that are not there, but I think she is very particular about her sets. For example the colours on her Billy Jean set are reflective of those in MJ's video set. Taking this into account, take a look at the chair she is sitting on in her 10yo version and then of course the setting for the current version. Coincidence maybe...but I don't think so!

Yes, PO, this is one for the ears. I've heard this song numerous times in my life, and it was like "Ehhh, it's OK" but it really didn't do anything for me. Angelina's cover proved something to me, and that is, everything she sings is a SO much better. This song just makes me smile. And since she was young, I kept thinking "How does she sound so great at such a young age?" and now at 16 I find myself still asking the same question. I absolutely love her voice. My favorite Angelina song? Whatever I heard her sing last.

Thank you for the "with" and "without" video performances. I, too, prefer just listening, but Angelina is so captivating beautiful that try as I might, I was never successful in keeping my eyes closed throughout her performance. I feel certain in my own mind that Angelina had a purpose for creating the video, but for me, it was far too "busy" - about half the number of images and less movement would have led to less distraction, in my opinion. In the previous performances of this song, she has sung all of it. It disappoints me that she did not do the same this time, but decided to only include the verses that every other singer covering the song does. I agree with the comments of @Jim Donaldson and @Ron Jones that Angelina is so multi-talented that she will successfully master whatever she chooses to do.

@@Pontus-Osterlin Hehe. Her phrasing on the words "weak" and "speak" at 8:07 and 8:12 To go down low in the end of those words is HARD to do and takes a lot of control + register (which she ofc has by the bucketloads...lol) The same pretty much goes with how she sings "figure" at 10:38 Then I also particularly like her tonality when she sings "but" at 8:21 and 11:01 After "but" she goes straight to her head voice... Incredible. - SMALL details, but they make it sound SO amazing IMO. Tell me if you agree ?

What a great reaction Pontus. I really like your “experiment” too. Ironically the song you selected didn’t have any video of her singing (as a visual person, I usually prefer actually seeing her sing), but the experiment was useful and eye-opening nonetheless. I have listened to numerous reaction videos of this song, partly because I think it’s one of her best vocal performances to date, but after your experiment, I noticed that the video is in a way somewhat distracting, to me, anyway. Not in the normal way, though. I realized that subconsciously my mind uses the visual images as cues, and it makes me anticipate certain musical passages, distracting me in the process. By sharing your experiment, I realized that, for this video at least, I really could absorb my entire mind into focusing totally on Angelina’s beautiful voice. I really did get lost in the song more thoroughly. Thank you for that experience. ♥️ BTW, before hearing your reaction and analysis, it occurred to me that I actually shared an impression that you had. That last note absolutely stood out for me too! It joins a handful of Angelina’s songs (many of them, really) in which the best is reserved for the end… the entire songs acts as a emotional crescendo to the end - something that I actually look forward to. Songs that fit this pattern, from my perspective anyway, include: “I Put a Spell on you”, “Oslo”, “It’s a Man’s World”, “Shield”, and of course, “I’m Still Holding Out For You”. Wonderful job Pontus. ♥️👣

The subtle addition of this genius detail demonstrates the meticulous effort you put into your reaction videos. It's a shame for all of those who may overlook or miss out on the full extent of your handiwork.....I'm curious whether the poster was something you just happened to have on hand, whether you tracked it down to create a background for your video or is there some other story behind its inclusion?
