This episode of Hate It or Love It explores 7 reasons why people online/IRL seem to HATE Taylor Swift, one of the most popular artists of the 21st century. In this episode I also included an apology to Taylor RE: the leaked phone call with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. Taylor was sabotaged there, that much is clear to me now.
One other note: I filmed the original version of the video a week before it was posted, but re-did it after the full call surfaced online.

Yes, she is EXTREMELY privileged. Not many people get a $ 2,600 guitar just for them to play at home when they're 14. Not many people have their parents be so supportive of them as to move to fucking Nashville to pursue a music career with no guarantee of success. She's always been privileged and comes from a family of both emotional and financial support. Thing is, she's never said otherwise. She's never played the underdog or said she came from nothing. In fact you often see her publicly acknowledging the privilege she profits from in life. And let's also mention that just because someone had an uncomplicated childhood or an "easy life" doesn't mean they're not hardworking. Taylor's work ethic has been solid and unbreakable from the very beginning. Mind you, this artist entered music biz without even being able to carry a tune (no, don't get all mad because I'm a hardcore fan but we gotta be real). However she worked on it for years and refused to not perform live, and she's significantly better than she was back then. This work ethic, along with her songwriting skills, intelligence and her parents' support, that's what got her to where she is. No amount of money will make you hardworking or talented. She knows her roots, just like all of us. Difference is, she's okay with them and for some reason some aren't.

Yes! People really over-exaggerate how rich her family was. They were more well off than most people and that privilege certainly played a big part in Taylor getting access to the opportunities that led to her success, but they weren't filthy stinking rich. They were on the upper end of middle class. Taylor and her brother still had a relatively normal childhood, went to public school, lived in a normal house, and everything. But it's not like Taylor was some heiress whose rich daddy bought her career like some suggest. Her father was a stock broker who helped Big Machine get off the ground by investing in it. But remember that this was still a big risk that could have very easily backfired. Taylor literally turned down a major record deal to take a chance with this small upstart label just so she could be able to write her own songs. If the slightest thing went wrong, Taylor's story could have ended right then and there. And even if Taylor's father helped, it wouldn't matter if Taylor didn't have the talent and tunes to back it all up. Plenty of rich girls probably buy their way to a record deal, but we never hear from them because they didn't have the tunes and the fan base to back it up. Taylor did. She ultimately had to have music that connected with people. It doesn't really matter how she got her start and who opened the doors for her. One last point, it's so weird how the term "industry plant" only gets thrown around with female artists. Whenever a female artist achieves great success, a lot of men feel the need to explain away that success with stupid conspiracies that I don't see with male artists.

I'm a singer and songwriter ,and I realized that it's ok to have someone not like your work, but it doesn't mean you hate or are jealous of someone. I count myself as one of the person that dislike Taylor Swift (hate is a strong word), but I DEEPLY HATE HER FANS. They're the most toxic fandom out there, even more toxic than the BeyHive. I had a few encounters with many of them on social media and they even tried to dox me because I said I didn't like most of Taylor's discography and said her voice was mediocre. They have attacked critics who dared not to give Taylor a 10/10, they have attacked her exes. First of all get your facts straight before you say anything, artists can grow artistically she always has had pop elements in all her albums her most country album was probably her debut, you don't need to scrutinize her every move ,you understand that right. she always has played with genres, her sophomore album fearless had a lot more pop elements than her debut, her third album speak now had a lot of rock influences, red was mosaic with a lot of different sounds and genres, like pop, edm, country etc and she became a mainstay in pop music with her 3 albums lover, reputation and 1989 all sonically and thematically different and now she has gone down the alternative road with folklore and evermore so to conclude she has always and will always continue to play with genres, and there is no reason for you to deem her as an "calculative" "money obsessed person".

Taylor being an "underdog" was never about her growing up poor and I don't see anyone claiming she was, it seems to just be a strawman argument used by her haters. However, just because she had wealthy parents, that doesn't mean she was handed her career on a silver platter. That makes it seem like some big record label picked out some random teenager out of high school and threw millions of dollars in promo at her to turn her into an overnight sensation. She was laying the early groundwork when she was 8-11 and was working at it really seriously from age 12 to 18 before Love Story turned into a smash hit when she was 19, and then she was still very busy working to capitalize off that success and maintain it for the years that followed. She was never a starving artist, but she still put a lot of sweat over a long period of time to get to where she is, just like in many underdog stories, because she never really got a big lucky break imo. Just steadily working her way up. Like when she got her first big hit, that was 9-10 years after she was when she started singing in karaoke contests and won a national childrens poetry contest. When she got her first #1 hit, that was about 11 years after she first started shopping around her demos to Nashville record labels.

She wanted to be a singer since she was 9 and her parents sent her to private singing and acting lesson by flying her to NY. Her parents even hired a talent manager to help her with her career and she got some minor gigs since she was 12. Her parents fired the talent manager because her career went no where. Later on her dad invested $300k at the Record Label Big Machine and shortly after Taylor Swift sign her first official record label at age 14. Coincidence? That's a lot of parents involvement. It's not natural for a young child to be a entertainer as such a young age. It's also illegal for any recording label in NY to sign a minor without a court order. Tennessee is a whole completely different story and easier place for her to get a record deal. Why else she was the youngest artist to sign into a record label? Also Taylor Swift complain they own her masters and her work and had her contracts to tied her to the label for years. What I read she had a 13 years contract. Like at age 14 she sign a 13 years contract with a record label. That's insane.

I still find it weird that people made such a big deal out of her switch to pop. When has Taylor EVER made it seem like she was super traditionalist about restricting herself to one genre? Was it when she was opening all her concerts with a cover of Eminem's Lose Yourself back when her single "Tim McGraw" was making its way up the charts in early 2007? Was it the fact that the first act she opened for was possibly the most cross-over friendly country act of the time (Rascall Flatts) as well as idolizing other very cross-over friendly country acts like Shania Twain? ...Her first album was already full of very pop leaning songs like A Place In This World, Teardrops On My Guitar, The Outside, I'm Only Me When I'm With You... even Picture To Burn, Should've Said No and Our Song were relatively pop friendly by the country standards of the time. She did the cross-roads performance with Def Leppard in 2008. When she was using other artists' music as background music for her Myspace/KZbin vlogs, it was mostly Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Fall Out Boy, Kings of Leon and other pop/pop-rock acts. When she was doing covers it was also mostly pop and pop-rock songs, at least on her own tours like for Speak Now Tour. She mostly just covered country songs at country award shows. Fearless and Speak Now were very pop/pop-rock. I think they have much more in common with the guitar-pop/chick-rock of the 90s-00s like Natalie Imbruglia, Michelle Branch, Dido, etc. Country radio just gave her a pass because so much of pop back then was electro-pop so anything with real instruments could pass as "country" by comparison, and she still had a light country accent and brought a new audience to their radio stations. But I think it was always obvious that pop would be a natural fit for her.

Even speaking as a fan, I think the main reason why people hate Taylor Swift is because her persona does come off as fake and manipulative. She's just too perfect, too nice, too wholesome, too eloquent, too funny without effort, too "calculated" (even though I know she hates that word). Do you remember that kid we all knew in school growing up who always seemed too perfect? They were a total teacher's pet, really smart, really mature and kind? Remember how much you hated that kid? It's because you knew deep down: "Nobody is this perfect! What are you hiding?" Taylor Swift exemplifies that kid to the extreme, and she probably was that kid. I don't think she intends to come off that way and I don't think that she's fake. She does put on a persona in interviews and on stage, but so do most of us in our daily lives. She's no more fake than I am in my public life. But I do understand why her persona rubs people the wrong way. She just doesn't come across as authentic and real. She doesn't seem like a real human being. Compare her persona in interviews with someone like Ariana Grande, who is the complete opposite: inarticulate, neurotic, doesn't have a filter, and isn't afraid to be kinda bitchy when it's called for. Taylor just won't let anyone see her as less than perfect, and people get annoyed. That being said, I think Taylor is finally starting to let go of this expectation a little bit. Hell, she even let people hear her say "fuck" multiple times in her documentary, which was so surreal for me.

probably bcs she was raised by a "modest" family, her family was pretty conservative tho. i had that one friend, her life seemed perfect, her parents are so supportive with her coffee shop business, she was very down to earth, loved to help ppl around her, even if they are not close friends. quite smart too. but little did her friends know she was diagnosed with a chronic liver disease. i don't remember the disease name but it made her hospitalized for a month before she passed away. few of my former classmates hated me for hanging out with her cus they think she's "too good to be true". so i totally understand why taylor was hated for no reason, for being herself. many might say she faked her dance when she had fun at music awards but that's just her thing.

My relationship with Taylor Swift as an artist is very similar to mine with Drake (ironic since they’re pretty much the 2 biggest artists of the 2010s), I was never a fan of either but they put out some decent and sometimes even great songs earlier in their career, but as they began to get bigger and started becoming overexposed, they started to become insufferable to me (Scorpion and Reputation, anyone?) They’ll still occasionally put out some singles that I really like though (ex. Nice For What and Lover’s title track) (Edit: my comment aged very poorly, because damn Folklore is good, what I said about Drake still stands though)

Her father bought the place from a client, probably to give Mama Swift a place to ride horses. One interview Taylor gave back in the early days mentioned her having to break the news to her mom that she would rather play guitar than go to horse shows and compete as an equestrienne. I think she said she was 12 then.

Reading itself, though with still beautiful historical architecture, is a dilapidated city that’s very divided. The city is impoverished and has similar issues to some of the badlands of Philadelphia largely due to a Democratic stronghold. So least the west side still has some local small business. For me it's clear that she doesn't actually know who she is. Her perception of identity is completely based on what other people think of her (fans, men, other Hollywood stars etc.). She reinvents herself constantly, not for herself, but so she can stay relevant and continue to get the praise that keeps her going. She absolutely does not know who she is without the attention of adoring fans, or even the negative attention that keeps people talking about her. What possibly bothers me the most is that her fans act like she's some superhuman that can never do anything even remotely wrong. They viscously attack anyone who doesn't like Taylor or tries to hold her accountable. She has manipulated a whole hoard of people into doing the dirty work of defending her reputation while she really can just sit back and let her army attack.They really act like the only way someone can legitimately not like her and her music is because they are sexist (think about how ridiculous that is for a moment). This is the narrative they have been spoon fed and it's so immature and irrational. It's actually very smart of Taylor to set this up for herself, but also extremely manipulative to her fans. It's also clear she has been ripping off Lana Del Ray for years (and other artists). Her latest album solidifies this. At the end of the day, she is a talented person who could honestly be much better if she stopped living for other people. The thing about Taylor is, you can tell deep down she doesn't believe in herself and her talent enough to be her authentic self. Clearly it's working for many people, but that doesn't change that what the fans are buying isn't real, and it must hurt Taylor to know that what so many people love is a contrived version of herself, completely created for public consumption.

Shes actually pretty BAD in that area. I know great lyrics, and i've listened to the best. Dylan, Lennon, Pink Floyd, Neil Peart/Rush, Neil Young, Robert Plant, Kurt Cobain,..............She doesn't deserve to even be mentioned next to these people. Hell, i know people in my hometown that can write better lyrics. She deserves no high respect at all as a lyricist. Sorry, but gotta be honest.🤷‍♂ I can appreciate her working hard and TRYING to write lyrics. But that doesn't mean shes very good. I agree that its wrong to just be cruel to her, or mock her for everything. But that doesnt mean we have to pretend that she excels at something that she clearly doesnt. Shes just the latest in mass produced marketing. Like Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, etc. She DOES have her talents, such as stage performance. But shes no high-ranking lyricist.

@@billybob5337 I don’t think she’s the best lyricist of all time, but now, in mainstream music, she’s a stand-out. I would recommend listening to her album ‘evermore’, specifically songs like ‘tolerate it’ and ‘ivy’ for some great songwriting.. I’m interested why you think she’s not a good lyric writer though.. Sure, her radio-friendly pop songs are simple and repetitive, but lyrics don’t have to sound Shakespearean to be effective. Although, there are plenty of ‘Shakespearean’ type songs in her discography. I guess we’re all entitled to our own opinion and we all like different music and lyric styles :)

I used to be scared to listen to her old albums as well. But considering how much she has matured I decided to give them a go and I actually liked them. It did take me a while to like them but at the end I did like them. Instead of seeing the negativity I just looked at them as different stages in her life. The thing I liked about going through her albums was how the songs really showcase how much she's grown as a person and how her views have changed over time. If you haven't listened to them, you really should and see it for what it is. Her just growing up.

I saw a video that said Toby Keith signed Teen Taylor to his record label. It's possible Taylor's parents contributed financially to Big machine records because it's awfully coincidental that a person who just started a record label and his first artist is Taylor Swift so naturally she is going to get pushed really hard by the record label being the labels only signed artist at the time. I'm not really a Taylor fan,but regardless of her family helping her music career she has talent and a relateability that endears her to her fans.

As a Taylor fan, I agree w some of these points. But I do wanna say rep and Lover only had 2 and 4 editions respectively (not 10). And at least for these past 2 albums you know what you get if you look online before buying. Merch is also pretty expensive, and limited edition comes out frequently so people impulse buy, & tickets are expensive. It is a bit annoying tbh and many fans feel this way. I suppose it at least it isn’t to the level of the completely random 1989 polaroids where you did have to buy probably 10 copies to collect them all.

I don't hate Taylor Swift. She is absolutely not my sort of music, and due to a phase my daughter went through I know her catalog (at least up until Red) FAR better than I wish I did. She is not someone I listen to on purpose. But I do respect that she does write a lot of her own material, and she doesn't maintain her career through escalating sexual provocativeness. I believe that unlike some autotune dependent pop stars, she could sit down in a small venue with a guitar or piano and entertain on her own. Is she thought provoking and deep? No, but she's someone who from an early age was in a business where you need to appeal to the broadest base possible. Pop acts travel in a different circle than acts like Rage Against The Machine. She is who she is. I respect her for being good at it. Just don't make me listen to her too much.

What's funny is the same stuff she wears in her concert will look provocative and over sexualized on someone else. She also doesn't have the dance moves even if she tried which she did to look sexy. And oh boy she tried. That girl tried to twerk but she couldn't do that to save her life. But instead it ends up looking corky and dorky which people accepts. It's like she has a completely different aura. And no matter how hard she tried to look cool and sexy it doesn't make her look slutty or over sexualized. Maybe it's her body type. I donno. Like she is beautiful but she just doesn't pull off sexy and could wear the sluttiest thing and not even look provocative. Even her messy dating life people just don't see her as sexual or provocative. But she could date men double her age or way younger than her age and people will accept she is the victim of every broken relationship. She could even cheat on her BF and still come out as the good girl.

It really just comes down to how constantly over-exposed she is. You can't turn a corner without her being there. You can't turn on the radio without her name coming up in someone way. Can't get online without articles being shoved in your face. Thats not an issue if you're a huge fan. But if you're not, then it just becomes more and more annoying. Especially if you don't consider her to be that good. You'd much rather hear things about people that you see as more talented or more worthy. Most of her haters don't get online typing "Taylor Swift." Content about her is inescapable. So if they can't avoid it anyway, then they take the time to bash her and get it out of their system. Because its right there. Another dimension was added, of course, when she decided to go publicly political. That made her even more divisive than she already was. So she has basically reached a Lebron level of toxic division. Well, maybe not quite THAT bad. But not far from it
