When it comes to watching anime I watch in Japanese, but I use dubs when making videos because they are less distracting. I find it disconcerting in video essays when the narrator is talking to you in English and then suddenly you have to read subtitles - if I can help it I like to keep things in one language for the sake of flow. If the dubs are truly awful - or there simply aren't any - I'll use the original Japanese. Pinning because I get this question a lot! :P

"your name" is worst work of Makoto Shinkai. Sad, that majority of people (including you) don't understand that. It is stupid and can't stand any rational criticism. Pure emotions for braindead humanitarians. All Makoto's previous works are far stonger in logical way, even while imperfect. But still. "you name" has the worst and most stupid plot and story for infantile ignorant people. For me emotions don't work when they have no rational basis behind it. There was far more solid ground in "Voices of a Distant Star" and so on. I watched them all and as a polymath know what I'm talking about.

You sir, made my night. I watched "Your Name" while in the throws of depression after my father died in late 2017. It was the first time that I ever watched an anime on my own. I'd seen DBZ and Spirited Away in the past because others made me, and I wasn't a fan at all. "Your Name" in no uncertain terms saved my life, and by extension so did Makoto Shinkai. I will always be grateful for what he did for me.
@kaije7art5 жыл бұрын
@@tambwetombo781 Apologies in advance for the length. Like I had indicated, my father passed away in November 2017, and I fell into an incredibly deep depression. I am normally a pretty emotional person, but my wife noticed that I had become a bit of a shell of who I was. I was unfeeling and uncaring, and had very little hope. I even had thoughts of suicide. Thankfully, my wife confronted me about it, and when she told me I seemed emotionally dead, I tried to do something about it. I watched comedies, movies that used to make me emotional... Nothing worked. I had taken to searching the internet for "movies that will make you cry"... and stumbled on "Your Name". The premise seemed weird, but I liked the trailer I saw and it looked good. I found it online, and watched it. Then the scene at the festival where they were all looking up at the comet happened... I got goosebumps, and I choked up a bit. Then the scene at the high school after, Taki in disbelief of what his phone was doing... I gasped, and felt tears start to well up. Then I basically lost it from the scenes leading up to "Katawaredoki", all the way to the end. I had not cried so hard in my life. Everything I was holding back opened up, and I felt something melt off of me. I felt like I gained some clarity, but I decided that I needed to watch it again. I did, and cried almost the entire way through. My life that was turned upside down, was finally starting to right itself again. I've been a fan of Shinkai's, and anime overall, ever since. I hope that helps?

I think Your Name (heck, even most of Shinkai's works) should be watched without a critical mindset for the full emotional roller coaster, at least on the first watch. Your Name's flaws are very apparent, but let them slide until after the movie, don't think about it, relax and enjoy the popcorn. Let yourself dive deep into the goosebumps the soundtrack gives you and enjoy what's on screen.

I started with 5 Centimeters per Second and I only watched it because it was suggested and I had no other show to watch at the time. And then, it became my favorite anime movie because of how painful and how real it could be. Then I watched Voices of A Distant Star which I thought wasn't that great visually. But as the story progressed, I was heavily invested emotionally. Then there was his most recent works. I have watched Weathering With You and it may not be as awesome as Your Name, it was still a Makoto Shinkai film and he also made progress especially with the moving cameras which is extremely hard to fix the perspective when animating. To understand his films better, those should be watched with full attention and not while texting someone or scrolling on social media. I find that an insult to all the people who poured out all their time and effort to create every single frame in the film. The things I want to tell them, you mentioned here. So thank you for this video essay. You have just gained a new subscriber.

I can't even imagine texting/scrolling media during movies, especially such as this one. I watched Your Name with my girlfriend for the first time yesterday. It felt like every sound from the outside world could destroy this feeling of magic
@JoelBurger5 жыл бұрын
I think the comment that Shinkai's work (and Your Name specifically) is emotionally-driven deserves extra emphasis. Your Name has logical holes if you look for them (staring at the phones for as long as they do should've immediately clued Mitsuha and Taki in on the first big twist) but those holes don't really matter. It's an emotional journey first and foremost, which people butt up against because we've been conditioned too much to accept a single type of storytelling, where logical progression and sensible order are the main goals of a narrative. And I applaud that you look into these elements, when it is too easy on KZbin to go full CinemaSins and logically nitpick a story to literal death.

I LOVE THIS DUDES WORK. I saw voices of a distant star, place promised in our early days, and 5 cm per sec. need to see your name, but was waiting for the hype to die down. voices and place promised are 2 of my fav non ghibili movies. so bitter sweet.

Your very welcome Mr. O'Connell. Your smart, insightful, and professional tone to your anime analysis is a truly welcome change of pace from the usual loud, brazen, and campy takes on KZbin. Wishing you continued success and looking forward to seeing more of your quality videos!

Please, if you could, I would love to see and hear your videos in 4k resolution. I know this might sound unreasonable because I know that most animation is not, but I do believe Shinkai's work exists in 4k, it would just be icing on the cake. Once again, I watch your videos with excited ferver. You are one of the most touching souls on this planet, keep it up.

KZbin thank you for recommending me this. This is a beautifully constructed video, and though I may be late to the party, I want to become this professional and passionate in my videos. The editing is on point, so thank you. Hopefully within a few years from now maybe I'll get there, but my love for shinkai's work and anime as a whole is keeping me grounded during my journey.

The thing I love most about the movie, even more so than the visuals or the relationship between Mitsuha and Taki, was the soundtrack. Every track just fitted in so well, it was in the background when it needed to be and in the foreground when it mattered.

I discovered you today. This channel. And I'm struggling for words.. Thank you. I guess. Thank you for being one, in a shrinking pool of YT channels, that creates quality rather than quantity. Your videos are a joy to watch, and the editing, writing, and narration is top notch. I don't often get the feeling on KZbin any more, that the creators love what they do. But you seem genuine. Thanks. :)

Thank you for making the effort worth it :) its comments like this that help me put my all into each video, even whilst KZbin favours quantity over quality. So thank you for taking the time to post

No shit I cried watching this analysis. My god, I love how you put your script in timing with the video playing. That cut when Taki didn't get Mitsuha's name. I love it!! More power on you and your buttery, magical voice!

Your video was great, again! Although it's a famous and easy movie, for myself I almost never go so in-depth thinking about a movie so I really appreciate that you've done this video! Even if I had known all these things already, you analysis and interpretation is amazing and from a different or more in-depth perspective! Keep going!

Thank you for making this. This is so beautifully done. That last sentence was so powerful. Ever since I first saw this movie I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It’s always in the back of my head. Everything is so compelling about it from the stunning visuals to the cultural nuances to the heartbreaking emotion. It’s a movie like no other. It makes you feel empty, and sad, but somehow you channel the determination of the characters and feel inspired to move forward with a new look on life.

Thanks to your video, I'm off on a Shinkai binge. I saw 5 centimeters per second and A Garden of Words a while back, and I don't think I appreciated their nuances as much as I should have. Thank you for this amazing video! You've got yourself another subscriber :D
