The sad thing is most young people won’t understand the feelings portrayed in the garden of words. Many I’ve talked to find it dull, boring and uneventful. I felt heavy romance throughout through the use of isolation, peace, presence, subtle movements, gestures, the quiet and the beautiful scenery.

"life doesn't glimmer like this" I used to think that anime skies were just anime skies until I was in Tokyo in the spring this year and walked 6km across town as the sun was setting. The sky was something else, perfect blue with gorgeous shifting pastel clouds. I'd never seen anything like it before. There is something different about the light here. But yes, noticing details is one of the keys to happiness in life. Did you notice that little bird flitting about in the bushes by the bus stop? Or see the misspelled sign outside the cafe by the train station? Find little details every day that make you smile.

This was a really nice and insightful video essay. I wouldn't have noticed all of those particular aspects of Shinkai's animation style had you not pointed them out and it provided me with more clarity on 5 cms per second which I always feel like people should see before Your Name to understand how painful 5 cms is and thus how satisfying Your Name becomes. I remember thinking Shinkai is able to convey the painstakingly slow process through the things like the trains and the weather, without explicitly describing the feeling necessarily. I think it would be cool in general if you did just commentary videos on things like this, like what your thought about certain anime/ shows. etc.

This video is wonderful!! I found out Makoto Shinkai's work around 2009-2010 from his She and Her Cat video and I went sharing the video with my Facebook friend on his Facebook group/page. Until the last time we talked (we lost contact 2 years ago) he said he really appreciated Shinkai's video that I shared and that'd always be what he'll remember of me. I fell in love *_hard_* with Shinkai's work that in my English verbal examination (in 2010 when I was 15 years old) in front of several English teachers, where we could choose our own topic, I told the examiners "My topic will be about the greatest animator I have ever seen and admire, Makoto Shinkai". So yes. I also talked about his 5 centimeter movie and included other mangaka's mangas- basically why I love anime and manga. Years later, seeing Shinkai's work getting more and more recognized worldwide, I cried so much. Thank you for making this wonderful video 🌻

This video is really something I needed right now, thank you for making it. I've been trapped in NEETdom for the last 5 months and will be for the next whole year, because I have to recover from mental illnesses that have caused me to be dropped from my former major in university. I don't really want to wait *that* long, but I do want to start a new major, which is only possible once a year, in October. Next October would be too little time to recover, so next year's October it has to be. And due to this ridiculous amount of time I have on my hands now, a lot of the topics you talk about are things that I'm confronted with currently. I've never thought about what I'm doing as waiting, because I am trying to actively make this year significant towards reaching my destination (the new major). But I always struggled with the powerlessness of the times where I can't work towards my goals. Now I realise in those times I'm just like a person waiting for a train, and that it's an entirely normal part of life, just in a different, more abstract, context.
