this is the reason why judo and Jiu-Jitsu (I feel) are separate sports. this is what happens... I may have my rank from judo, but I always say play to the rules of the day. go to any tournament. that's the awesome thing about judo and any other grappling art is you have that versatility to do whichever part of your game is the specialty over what the rules say. as a judo guy, I'll go to a submission wrestling, judo, or Jiu-Jijitsu tournament. if I found local sambo ones I'd do that too. so many people fixate on being the best judo player or the best Jiu-Jitsu or wrestling player... what I think is even better than being really good at those sports is to be able to go to any of their tournaments and do decently no matter which tournament you go to. it's all grappling baby, don't complicate things...

I definitely agree! I'm nervous about broaching the subject with our Sensei because most times we are encouraged to get right up so that the pair next to you doesn't collide. I think it's a matter of space. That said I really think we miss out on transitions when that happens

In my days, yes. You can pull guard, open guard, knee slices, by basic training in Judo (not as advance as BJJ for sure). But we do have time Newaza. But we did not do leg locks.

I was under the impression that Judo was tachiwaza and newaza together hand-in-hand? That is the main reason that I would rather practice Judo first and then cross train BJJ and Judo! However judo's newaza groundwork seems to have more of a sense of urgency to get a submission off of their throwing technique either taking top position or back control versus BJJ gaurd pulling bullshitt and working from their back taking their time for however long necessary! Please do not compare newaza with BJJ! They are similar but they have different strategies and I don't think Judo is very big on working from their back which is why BJJ is good! But I think Judo is more practical because it has a sense of urgency and obtaining side control and top position off of a throw is more realistic for self-defense in my opinion making Judo the complete package of grappling!

No techniques designed to counter turtle style, nevermind destroy it. Your content is good enough to not have to put lies in the titles.

I was told that judo's newaza And Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Share the same techniques But The rules for each sport and strategic Outplay is completely different ! In Brazilian jiu-jitsu you can dick around And take your time for 20 or 30 minutes But in Judo you have to attack and quick With Judo groundwork Making newaza Way more effective in my opinion

I sincerely hope that Judo schools do not start implementing BJJ as their ground strategy and throwing away traditional Judo newaza! There's nothing wrong with judo's groundwork it is completely appropriate as a Continuum off of the throwing techniques! Judo's groundwork is fast and dynamic and urgent! BJJ is bullshit in a sense where flopping onto your ass and pulling guard is not only unmanly but unrealistic for any self-defense situation and BJJ takes way too long to get the job done! Seriously don't throw away judo's groundwork just because of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu popularity!

Brazilian "jiu jitsu" is nothing more than "Brazilian" Kodokan judo/jigoro Kano jiu jitsu....since it was a student of jigoro Kano, who teached judo/jigoro kano jiu jitsu to the gracies. so it should be renamed "Brazilian judo"

Not relevant to this video, but by this logic: Judo is nothing more than ju jutsu, since Jigoro Kano took it all from there. So it should be re-named 'ju jutsu'. There is a reason why Kano took a different name from the parent sport/activity, just as there is a reason why Maeda took a different name again for what became bjj.

Maeda taught Kodokan Judo, (with Kosen style, newaza emphasis) What name did you think Maeda called his teaching ? He was sent as a representative of Judo to teach Teddy Roosevelts marines and others and spread Judo Kano Jiu jitsu was the original name of what became known as Judo. Japanese Jujitsu is practiced very different to judo, please do not confuse the style. (check out Katori Shinto Ryu or other famous Jujitsu schools)

After some quick reading: Maeda started a judo club in Brazil in 1921, so yes judo it was (with the Gracies using the term 'ju jitsu' later). But I would hazard a guess his world travels were by then independent of the kodokan, who sent him as you say to USA. Not sure why you're talking about Japanese jujutsu -did you think Kano got his training from other arts??
