I don't think David was miscast, much like I don't think Kathleen was either. It's mainly because it's been 20+ years in this post apocalypse and looking cool just doesn't get you leadership, it's being able to get things done that secures your place. The qualities that we see as creepy or weird are beneficial in the world we're viewing. Though... some of those things are still terrible no matter how you slice it, which is why I love this show.
@safirestudio Жыл бұрын
If we look at history, cult leaders dont look charismatic from the outside. They're actually quite weird. They capture a very niche yet loyal following. David and Kathleen both have a way of convincing people they are helping them and they know best.

Perfectly stated. Its the freezing tundra and he is calm the entire time even returning to a calm after Ellie breaks his finger or had a gun pointed on him the entire time. That cold direct stare and calm tone w make the most desperate follow w heads down. Only possible improvement would be showing how he breaks the spirit of young girls maybe having another one showing complete devotion to him. Showing as he stated he enjoys the fight cuz he has a violent heart but only expresses it in certain sadistic ways. But these ppl were wolves always just in sheep’s skin. Apocalypse just allows for it to come out

@brendanmurphy1074 Жыл бұрын
I agree, he wasn't miscast. The lack of charisma that Grace mentions really comes from the way its been adapted. In the game when the infected attack Ellie and David, that builds up the gray area in his character. One point I've noticed is that both the original mocap actors so far have been cast as voices of reason to the villains who differ most from the source material. Perhaps a subconscious decision to make the deviations from the game more palatable?

Another example of the phenomenal writing of this show is the line “Don’t fall asleep!” when Ellie leaves Joel. Calls back to when he fell asleep on watch and also when he didn’t hear when Sam and Henry snuck up on them AND when Ellie fell asleep when Sam turned. I actually really liked the changes made to David. It's scarier that in the show, you wouldn't immediately assume the violence he's capable of. In the game, you had an idea that he was creepy from get-go.
@loco_logic Жыл бұрын
I actually thought the opposite. In the game, before his big "everything happens for a reason" speech, I constantly went back and forth on whether David was actually trustworthy or not. We knew nothing about his background, and the nature of his words and actions were intentionally ambiguous, and oftentimes benevolent. Any suspicious thoughts I had could be chalked up to overactive paranoia. But on the show, I would've already been weary right off the bat, because they immediately presented him as a religious leader with something to hide, and a possible control freak. Those are especially dangerous red flags in a post-apocalyptic setting.

In The Walking Dead it often felt like they had to squeeze in their weekly zombie quota, I've got no problem with the lack of infected as the best way to survive is to be where they aren't while having then remain a constant potential threat underpinning the story.
@cedric13 Жыл бұрын
I've never played the game but it makes sense that there are less infected running around than zombies in TWD. People in that universe become zombies after they do no mater how they were killed, for the most part. So long as they brain in generally intact they will turn, and for the most part they do not really fall apart too much over time. Here is this world it seems you can only get infected from a infected person, so if you die some other way you are just dead. And it was stated in the 20ish years since it started that alot of them already 'dried out' and were in effect dead. So there are probably a few orders of magnitude less infected in this story, then zombies in TWD story.

This episode did the Winter section justice! It was amazing to see Troy Baker as James and I don't think that David was miscast. The reason he was giving creepy vibes was because we saw him in his own environment in this episode, before he meets Ellie. He acted exactly like the kind, trustworthy guy when he meets Ellie in the TV show, until he reveals that Joel killed his men. I also agree that the infected moments are lacking. Episode 5 (with the infected and Bloater) was just right! And last episode, when Ellie and Riley were bitten should have had more infected and a chase scene imo.

There are a lot of sections in the show that don't have infected when the game did have, it's becasue infected are usually there for gameplay purposes rather than narrative purposes. And knowing where the sequel goes it's likely that season 2 would have even less infected in it, as it was even a complaint that a lot of people had with the game this time. Also, the debate on whether the relationship between Joel and Ellie is toxic or not is very much a thing in the game and it played a big part of the contraversy of the second (obviously not the biggest but it was something a lot of people either really loved or really hated). The game I think did do a poor job of setting up the more toxic side of the relationship, and I think that this is mostly because, due to the nature of The Last of Us being a video game, you end up identifying and relating with the character you play as very quickly, and I think that it made it difficult for a lot of people to take a step back and look at Joel's chracter from a less biased perspective, so when the second game did it, a lot of people felt it was an inaccurate depiction of him. I'm really curious if the show might not have this same issue, because the audience aren't literally playing as Joel, but rather instead as passive observers.

Agreed. But I also get where she's coming from - a zombie apocalypse show without zombies just becomes another apocalyptical show. The distinct version of The Last of Us zombies makes it stand out from other mediums/sources. But yeah, I agree that at the heart of any apocalyptical show is human choices, emotions, and decisions. I think she was just saying to have more of a balance. There have been multiple episodes now where the zombies are just a nebulous distant threat and aren't even shown at all.

We should also note the irony that in a world of cordyceps, Ellie saved Joel's life with a dose of mold. If you look up the history of penicillin, it was discovered by accident when a researcher named Alexander Fleming, who was studying the growth of bacteria in Petri dishes left a window open, and the mold/fugi that would become penicillin floated in through the window, landed in the dish and took root. They were all savages like David.

David in the game is meant to come off as a regular, fatherly type figure that earns Ellie’s trust by working with her to fight off infected - the perception only changes after the revelation but he never stops feeling like a regular man (and remains genuine in his concern for Ellie). As for religious elements, they are in the background (eg. the banner in the dining hall) and it’s just that we never get enough detail of the community as a whole.

I think the reason due to the less infected is that the only reason there were infected in the game is to make it easier for the devs to tell the story through gameplay. Originally during development there was no infected and it was just a virus that would kill you but the team realised that wasn't fun for the player and it stopped them from being able to tell the story in a more visual way, but now that it's a TV show they need that less so I think they've put less focus on the infected. Hopefully we see more in season 2!

I really liked the episode but it should have been longer. It felt a bit rushed. I hope the finale is longer.

This is the video I always look for once the episode ends. Love them.

This show is a complete dumpster fire. After episodes 3 and 7, I am not watching this show again. The finale won't be good!

@@minafrota6124 In fact I did not like episode 3 and 7. I like more the episodes following the main storyline.

@@Sanj1n Ellie is the main character of the story. Episode 7 very much followed the main story.

@@leon45sant It's okay that you don't like the show, or more specifically the story of humanity that is being told. I will say, however, that if a story of humanity is so aggrivating for you, then it may be time to do some self-reflecting on what makes you feel so resentful towards the idea of other humans. Nevertheless, you're submitting that 75% of the show has met your standards. All things considered, that's pretty damn good.

I like all the Batman references . What this shows is that a film with a teen Robin can work despite some clowns claiming it could not .

Remember Game of Thrones was pretty cheap until end of season 2 w/ battle of black water. Last of Us season 1 def needs a lot more infected and they better have a decent infected set piece for the finale, but I can understand them playing safe w/ season 1 and trying to drive home the human element of the story in case this was their one and only shot. Now they can really open up for season 2 and hopefully lean more horror/action/drama.

That last scene with the knife. Lit by the fire. It just kept going on and on and on. Dang was that good. You could feel the rush of emotions she had.

Well done episode. Scott And Troy killed it and Pedro And Belle deserve Emmys. Wish The Episode was aleast 10 Minutes longer to have The Infected Scene but great episode. Can't wait for the finale and excited for Ashley. Hope to get more Infected In Season 2 Especially The Rat King.

I actually really liked the actor who played David. Grace not sure if you are a lost fan, but he reminded me of the character Ben Linus who also was a leader but was soft spoken and creepy. And personally I am loving that the show is more interested in showing us the human characters rather than the infected. It’s makes it a more unique apocalypse story and not a carbon copy of others.
