Thanks for this vid. Im doing this in my driveway. No hoist lol i got everything off but the torque converter nuts, and mounting bolts. If ur ever in this position again instead of getting the torque converter bolts from the bottom theres a rubber plug on the driver side on the block which comes off and lines right up with the bolts. Can get em with a ratchet. Much easier then messing with wrenches in half an inch of space lol

This definitely helped out so much! I figured out though if you’re stuck on jackstands or wheel ramps like I was, you can use the weight of the car to drop the crossmember by wrapping a chain around the crossmember and jacking up the car from the side of the car with the chain underneath the floor jack to provide tension on the chain! 3 creaks later and it came right down! Other then that a definite thumbs up from me!

The trick for the torque converter nuts is that on the driver's side of the block, there's an access port with a rubber grommet in it. Gives you direct access to the nuts.

I like how you were mad about the bolts being tight. Then got mad because they didn't have loctite on them lol good video. My flex plate starting to tap. Might decide to drop the trans myself and do it.

what did you do about the flexplate? mines also tapping and tapped in the past. the last time it was tapping it tapped until it broke loose and my car stopped driving and didn't start. can it be just my loose bolts on the flywheel because of no lock tight? or worse?

Thanks so much, my 05 p71 should be giving birth to a bad ( or at least I hope) in the morning once I get the flex plate off. All thanks to this video. The car would only Go in reverse and had no speedometer or odometer reading, when in drive it would move. Barely under high rpm then go into limp mode od off light flash with wrench on dash. Gave me p 0720 and p2106. New sensors, new throttle body. Fresh fluid and filter no fix so I got one at salvage yard for $530. It's a reman with 130k. May rebuild the old transmission and find a cv in need of a new transmission.

Helpful hints: Remove the top two bolts (trans to block) from the top before even getting under the car. CUT the exhaust ahead of the converters; it's simpler to have the pipes welded back than try and drill/tap/burn the manifold bolts. AND, after cutting them, rejoin the trans lines with a compression fitting (They use rubber hose at the radiator meaning a compression fitting will easily hold the pressure).

Crossmember,forget the chains ,bars, jacks etc,! Use a GOOD air chisel to spread the bracket and 10 seconds it drops! never failed me yet.

Great video! I am pulling the trans out of my 06 P71 also, but I'm doing it the hard way, on my back. How did you end up getting the broken stud out of the drivers exhaust manifold? I ask because I doubled down on you and broke both of them off.... Passenger side both came off fine. Also, it's much easier to get the converter nuts off through the hole in the block on the drivers side, opposite the hole on the pass side the starter mounts into. It has a rubber plug covering it.

Nice video just changed my transmission in 2005 mercury the hardest part was pressing down the cross member was stuck because of rust i bent my crow bar i had to use a thicker pry bar to remove it came out easy..

To any one watching this to do it yourself before you remove the drive shaft you have to mark the pinion flange so it goes back the same way it came off because it is. Balanced

It's balanced off the car in the machining process. The orientation it was removed from the pinion is irrelevant. The drive shaft is balanced before it goes on the car.

Ideally it's definitely better to use a line wrench versus a regular open end crescent wrench.You can strip the nuts pretty easy if you use a crescent.

So I see all these videos for fixing the problem I’m having and everyone removes the crossmember but I only have to swap the torque converter. Couldn’t I just slid the transmission backwards far enough to put a new one in instead of dropping the crossmember or no?

there is a better access point to the flywheel bolts that go into the tourqe converter. there is a 2inch round rubber plug on the drivers side on top of the bell housing

let me ask you a question? my intake manifold the piece in the back where the heater hose connects to the intake manifold broke off from old age i guess and i have to buy a new intake manifold but i heard that i have to change my water pump and spark plugs as well so i wanted to know if that's true? i got the car in 2011 and i changed a lot of things including the rear main seal the motor mounts the engine oil pan gasket valve cover gaskets i had to do a heads job on it as well but i never changed the water pump and now i have to see if that is true

How not to remove a transmission. The crossmember wouldn't have bent if you would have removed the transmission mount bolts first. Plus using the crowbar pulling on the crossmember most likely damaged your transmission mount.

Thats not true at all. The mount was already damaged and that is normal as the rubber is solely for vibration resistance. Prying down on the ctoss member doesn't effect the mount at all. Because the transmission is not attached to the body above. It rests on the cross member. In order for the mount to be damaged by his Prying down the trans would have to be fastened to the body above it. But as you see the trans freely falls when the cross member is removed. Also the cross member is going to bend on these. It takes a lot of force to pry that out of the frame like that. Especially with cars from up north with the rust.

What to do if the overdrive does not work? At some point, the car will stop accelerating and just rev up. At that point, I have to hit the button to turn overdrive off and at that point it drive in low gear. Is there an easy fix to this problem?

Hi Brian. I have a ex state patrol 2010 vic ceptor. I month out and had a catastrophic fail. New alternator, dead batt. First the interior power failed, radio ect. Then airbag light came on. Trans started slipping out of gear at the same time the fuel system was shutting down. Probably due to corrosion problems in the electrical system. It's in upstate New York. Any ideas? The alternator is 200amp, New last month. ?

i removed motor mount bolts to engine on passenger side with intake removed and was able to remove passenger side valve cover by placing jack with wood under oil pan and raising engine a couple of inches

Yes, 06 town car owner here. All Panther-body cars (Crown Vic, Town Car, and Grand Marquis) use the 4R70E transmission for the 05. 06 up use the 4R75W.

05-08 is the only years with compatible transmissions. All panther platforms from 05-08 have interchangeable transmissions.
