Love the way he digs into every note and squeezes so much tone from the guitar. Sure, some showy fun stuff, and kind of "full blast" most of the time, but with some real music in his fingers. You can hear his passion in the way he plays the strings, regardless of how fun and showy it might be. Gotta mix up the show with a tune like this once in a while!

Tommy has VERY big strong hands and fingers. YOU can see it, and hear it all through this. His hand volume thru the guitar reminds me of SRV, both with similar hands, and gut feelings for rhythm, Guthrie Govan has no hope here, even though he is a way better shredder.He is too thin in the hands to really crank animal volume like I mentioned above.

Why are people critising. The blues is personnal, self expression, wild untamed, calm. Tommy is clearly having fun, and thankfully we have been able to see what a great unspoilt blues man he is. No fancy guitar or effects. No one can say they can watch that and not be in awe of the guy. Have you listened to Angelina, Haba Na Haba, or anything from his CD titled The Colonel and the Government (2013)or Little By Little (2011). Good music and it does not sound dated. He can play anything he likes, without a ton of effects and distortion.
@kfs4piano11 жыл бұрын
Everyone has their own taste in music. However, I don't think you have listened to the two recordings I mentioned. There are no pyrotechnics in either one, just some beautiful music. Take care.
@kfs4piano11 жыл бұрын
That's too bad, there are a couple of good tunes on them both. Everyone's taste in music is different of course. I could say I find Lenny Breau's playing to be very cerebral and lacking in soul. There is sometimes a lack of dynamics in his playing, but that would be nitpicking and maybe I have not spent enough time listening to him. Rolling Stone rated the top 100 guitar players of all time and neither Tommy or Lenny made the list. I guess according to the experts, we are both wrong. Chet Atkins liked them both enough to play shows with them. I have played with a lot of guitar players, and none of them would call Tommy or Lenny mediocre. I was a piano major (dumb move) and I could barely make it through the first few measures of any piece I was playing without my instructor stopping me and finding something wrong with at least one note I was playing. But she still liked my playing overall. I am glad she did not call my playing mediocre. I would hate to put all of that work into being mediocre.
@kfs4piano11 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your opinion, but you know what they say about those. Oscar Peterson is one if my favorite players, but I have ran in to people who will tell me they don't like or appreciate his playing. But, they are not arrogant enough to call it mediocre. You must be one heck of a guitarist to offer up that critique. I would live to hear you play sometime.

@t3tsuyaguy111 жыл бұрын
You know? If you keep playing, the callouses go away after a few years. I had pretty hard rough callouses the first 3 years I played. There was a strip of ugly hard tissue on the outer edge of my forefinger from playing a ton barre chords. Then one I day I noticed they just weren't there anymore. It's a rare day, when I don't play at least an hour of guitar, but nothing ever hurts. The skin on my finger tips seems a bit thicker than anywhere else, but that's about it. I've met quite a few other guitarists with the same thing. I don't know why it is, but they go away.

Give that banjo to Tommy and he'll shred it too !

Kudos to Tommy, no doubt. He is a singular talent and has soul to go w his speed and technique. BUT still I prefer Mississippi John Hurt or Skip James. Blues to the bone. "I'm built for comfort, not for speed" Willie Dixon wrote for Wolf.

My dream would be to have Tommy Emmanial for a guitar teacher. To even achieve a fraction of his technical mastery of the guitar is hard to imagine. His dedication to the instrument is extraordinary and I truly appreciate it.

I 've been playing guitar for 60 years. I have played this same song 1000 times. Not nearly as well or as fast as him. LOL. It 's a work in progress, always.
