It was November 1963 and I was a six years old school child from St Xavier's Patna who had come to visit with his parents the Golden Temple at Amritsar on the way back from Kashmir for a brief stop to see that temple of temples the Hari Mandir of Shri Guru Maharaj Ramdas Ji that was built majestically by Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji the victor of Balkh and Khurasan and Kabul and Kandahar and Ghazni! It was Shabad Kirtan time and luckily being a small boy I was able to move past maybe 60- 70 devotees to come close to the trio singing "Raam Gobind Japaindiyaan Howa Mukh Pawittar!" All of these Hazuri Ragis, the principal at the centre with the harmonium, the Tabla player at left and the Sarangi player at right, all singing together in unison, were blind people hiding their blind eyes with dark round goggles and singing their hearts out without the amplification of microphones and loudspeakers and their enchanting melody rising and resonating in the high and lofty ceilings of the ethereal Golden Temple, keeping the hundreds of listeners silent and magic bound! That evening I came to know the blind Sikh Ragi at the harmonium was Bhai Gopal Singh Ji, a legend whose rendering has yet to be seconded. He sang as if a voice from the high heavens had descended at the Golden Temple and entered the hearts and souls of all listeners. I did not have a tape recorder then to capture his magic. I had the oppurtunity to listen to his 48 and 72 RPM HMV and Odeon gramophone records. Some of these are still at the AIR and Prasar Bharti archives never played out again.
