Helmut… I must be honest and tell you that each time I watch your playing I take mental notes and always learn something new from your technique 😊… very natural, never over flattering and I’m always left inspired. Awesome tone and playing! I also think the Friedman sounds more organic and Marshally. Soldano would probably be better for late 80's metal. Seems like an awesome space to hang out in and have a few beers while jamming!

I've been going back and forth between these two amps for months now and I'm still not sure which I want. I own a Blackstar Club 40 mkII that's capable of both American and British tones so in that aspect I'm spoiled, but these amps are next level. I'm an American, but I gravitate more toward British tones. But then there's another side of me that loves that American tone as well. So difficult, but can't afford both lol.

Well that was more than a year ago and I bought a BE50 Deluxe which was very very good, but ultimately I ended up selling it and got the SmallBox. It's as perfect as I've heard for British crunch tones and is a keeper. The only thing I miss about the BE50 Deluxe is the clean BB channel which is phenomenal. I'll probably end up adding a head with great American cleans, just for versatility. This SB is tops. So glad I got it. It's all a matter of taste.

@@HooksBill Hey man! I'm between these two amps myself, the SLO 30 or Friedman Smallbox. I play a kinda 90's punk rock style. Like a Bad Religion etc, wondering how well the smallbox would get there without a boost. I love that jcm800 (inspired tone) but would prefer a master volume that is more useable. Cheers!

Friedman sounds more "marshally", more british . Soldano more "compressed" , more american. Seems the mids are set deeper.

Interesting....the Soldano is the amp that is historically known for its mids. All the albums we've heard with an SLO on them from the 80's. It's such a great amp for the right style of music. Both of these amps seem a bit noisy to me, though. Almost a bit flubby, losing their articulation. Could be that guitar, or how they're dialed in. Both for the most part sound great though. Nice demo.

@@Biblrocks Yeah...I was wondering that. When Soldano came out with his HotRod 25, it sounded killer... I think this amp is just so unforgiving that if you don't hit it's sweet spot, it sounds incredibly average in many ways. The right guitar, the right cab....and some time learning it. The Friedman is badass right out of the box. Even his Runt 50 is just so damn good, and easy to use. Here's a video I found interesting on the SLO 30. I have NO idea what this guy did. For all I know there's all kinds of stuff happening behind the scenes, but he's got it sounding like the SLO we all know and worship: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJ7XfX5pfZefl68 . The Friedman has the marshall plexi character which is definitely my preference. If you ever get the opportunity to play on a Landry LS100G3, I'd love to hear your experience Bibl, because it also has the Marshall character, that amp personally appeals to me more in terms of sound than a Friedman, but okay that's my taste .

After re-watching this great episode for the 20th time or so in order to help me decide to order a SLO 100 or a Friedman BE, I remembered having recently seen a video where the host had his vocal mic similar to yours attached to his guitar strap at approximately at the same height where you usually put your mic on your shirt and there were no background noises audible at all when the guy moved and changed his position. there is s big price difference, the marshall is not bad, but the friedmann has 50 watt, is handwirerd and has a second channel.

I’m pretty sure Eddie used very light strings and a light pick.. don’t think he was digging in.. it’s sounds like he had a super relaxed right hand , picking hand which is the opposite of digging in Yes he had strong hands as is evident from his fretboard hand gymnastics

He did use a soldano for a period after David Lee Roth left the band But in my opinion his tone got worse and worse after Roth left

@@Biblrocks Amazing tone. That cabinet is a luxury most of us won't find. The closest modern speaker I have heard is a WGS green beret.

I’m gonna listen again but to me without paying too much attention fet like the Friedman was easier to hear in the mix, seemed to cut better . Ah yes, as I typed that you said it. I heard someone mention how even order harmonics help an amp cut better in the mix over odd order harmonics. To me Friedman’s sound not as aggressive as Marshall, and I prefer marshalls snarl but I do think marshalls have more odd order harmonics, they sound more “harsh” Friedman’s sound smoother but a bit more boring to me. The soldano sounds very satisfying alone because of its grittyness but it seems the Friedman’s voice just does better in a mix. I wonder if this infact has to do with more even order harmonics which may be giving the Friedman more of a controlled sound
