Thanks man. Spent a lot of time staring at a book, re-reading, and not understanding. Shame how much more helpful KZbin is for this stuff than these expensive books. Great explanation with some real life examples, not just the chemistry. Appreciate you.

This is an amazing explanation! I'm learning about the bicarbonate buffer system of Earth's climate via long-term rock weathering and this really helped me understand that a bit better!
@alastairhill97294 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this explanation! I've been trying to work out what happens if someone were to over-breathe. Over breathing would decrease the level of CO2, decreasing carbonic acid, decreasing the number of hydrogen ions, decreasing the bicarbonate, and increasing alkalinity. My guess, based upon this, is that the bicarbonate buffer system has no remedy other than to flush out the the bicarbonate buffer from the kidneys to attempt to reduce the blood becoming even more alkaline than it already is. Please let me know if the bicarbonate buffer has another mechanism for dealing with alkalinity besides reduced breathing (CO2 build up)? Therefore a habit of over breathing would impair how functional a person's bicarbonate buffer is, making them more even more breathless ... because their reduced bicarbonate buffer would make it harder for them to deal with acid build up from physical exercise and movement. In addition, the acid needed to create more hydrogen ions would have to come from another source other than CO2, like diet. Perhaps also, other sources of acid may not build up the bicarbonate buffer as CO2 does. I'm learning a lot about CO2 at the moment and it is so much more than just a waste guess and seems vital to lots of bodily functions. Any comments are welcome!
