In a press briefing, President Joe Biden unveiled a series of restrictions
on Chinese goods, alleging that Beijing was "cheating" American
manufacturers by providing state funding for its companies. The measures
include a 100 percent tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs),
citing claims that China is "flooding" the market with cheap goods.
Biden referenced past experiences where US steel towns were affected by
cheap imports from China, stating that it's not competition, but rather
cheating. He also announced plans to increase tariffs on Chinese solar
panels from 25 percent to 50 percent, and put a 50 percent tariff on
semiconductors made in China.
The tariff hikes extend to items such as lithium batteries, critical
minerals, and semiconductors. Beijing responded by saying that the move
will "seriously affect the atmosphere of bilateral cooperation" and
accused the US of "bullying".
In a separate announcement, Biden highlighted his administration's
investment in clean manufacturing, with up to $1.5 billion in six clean
steel projects across America.
