@paulk56702 ай бұрын
@@SuperMrHigginsAgreed. There needs to be some drastic reforms. Appointing a non-partisan commission to draw electoral districts would be a great start. And yes, such a thing as 'non-partisan' can exist. You get a bunch of policy wonks together to come up with a system, and they'll nerd out over it without worrying too much about the ramifications of who gets to win. That's one of the nice things about wonks. You can give the partiea standing to challenge the commission, but you have them arms-length and protect them from intimidation and interference. It's how it works in Canada, and for all our own faulta when it comes to elections and government, gerrymandered districts is not one of them. It was also sad to see the Electoral College abdicate the one justification for their existence when they confirmee Trump in 2016. They could have stepped up and been faithless electors and refused to hand the reins to someone so clearly unfit for office. But, as they didn't, there's really no remaining reason to have any electors between the electorate and the nomination.

While this is good advice be careful with the conspiracy theories. Now I recognize Republicans are openly purging voter rolls and so they might have done it, Trump's entire success is based on generalized distrust of government - so I urge people to avoid no-evidence allegations of corruption. There are a lot of good people in government and a lot of people just trying to do their job and go home. We absolutely should be diligent. But must be cautious in falling into the trap that just gives every theory the same weight. Which is how Trump can somehow use his own properties to make money and appoint his kids to government and somehow he's pretending to run on an anti corrupt government platform. "Drain [fill!] The swamp" being his message.

@@curtisridge2506Aww, you think republicans vote on policies! That would only make sense if you thought you'd be addressing the super rich here! Research has shown that voters who vote for democrats are much more informed on policies, much less likely to tow the party line (at least that was before republicans had abandoned their conservative platform to join a fascist cult of personality - now there's no real alternative choice) and significantly less likely to glorify a politician instead of looking at the positive and the negative. Right-wingers much more tend to fall into a worshipping behaviour, making criticism of "their chosen politician" an absolute taboo. They tend much more to act like sports team supporters: root for their party, no matter what, making the other side into enemies instead of people with a different perspective. They don't know about their party's true political agenda (also because the party does a good job with distraction tactics) which can be seen when looking at ballot initiatives that are separated from party affiliation: there, republican voters regularly vote for measures that are diametrically opposed to the Republican party's agenda and in keeping with the Democratic one.

Being observant of politics for years has let me take notice that even moderate Republicans that may deviate or disagree from the platform here and there...a Susan Collins for example...they still fall in line in the end with the Republicans like she did with Kavanaugh's confirmation and Trump's impeachment. I see the current Republican platform and ways of thinking as being so destructive to the country that this has led me to make MY OWN AND INDEPENDENT DECISION, to use my vote as best I can to defeat all current Republicans as long as they are being so extreme. Even with candidates, if individually they are someone like Larry Hogan who is a moderate Republican, I can't trust the platform he stands on. I mean, she's had a net total of 0 votes for her to be President as she dropped out before Iowa in 2020. Marianne Williamson came in 2nd in this primary; and Biden has not resigned from office. In that light, those folks have a real point. Problem is, there's no clean solution. The DNC canceling the primary, insiders covering up Biden's decline -- I mean, just a few months ago they were swearing he hadn't lost a step, and it was a struggle to keep up with him he was so on the ball; and it ain't like the debate was so out of character people suspected a stroke (Biden has had brain surgery for aneurysms in the past); /and/ Harris is complicit in that coverup -- but since this was conveniently done /after/ the last state primary, there's no democratic way of handling it. Given the deadline for Michigan's ballot access is two days after the Democratic National Convention ends means there's a real risk that an open convention that goes long poses a real hazard. And it isn't like delegates voting is any more legitimate than just handing the reins to Harris. As a practical matter, Harris is the least bad option. As a democratic matter, there's no democratic solution to be had. As a matter of propriety, Harris is suspect, but so is any other candidate. (To be fair to Marianne, she's nowhere near the delegates to win, so it's not like the rules hold she automatically wins.) So yeah, the safe play is probably Harris. But it's silly to be upset with people who thought the Democratic party would practice a little democracy here. In no uncertain terms, leadership lead us up a very tall, dead, rickety tree just as a strong storm was blowing in; I can't rightly fault people grumbling. Isn't like they have a say, all they can do is hold on for dear life and hope really hard the tree doesn't go down. Personally, I think it's those nearer the top that deserve your scorn. It's not even fair to Harris, given her potential historic victory will carry an asterisk. Installed as the candidate, not elected by voters. I just plain can't see any angle to this mess that doesn't speak terribly of the DNC. Meddled in 2016's primary; thumbed the scales in 2020; reorders state primaries to benefit Biden, then outright canceled 2024's; and if Harris wins, will we cancel the primary again in 2028? x.x
