For the autoscout thing, it seems that if you put an entire army of grouped scouts on autoscout at the same time, they will kind of follow eachother around. But if you spread the scouts apart just a little bit and put them on autoscout one at a time, they will do a much more efficient scouting job.

Regarding auto farm placement: as someone with chronic hand pain who has become stronger through aoe2, this is so fricking awesome. I was wondering why aoe4 had this feature and aoe2 did not. It's meticulous to try and place perfect farms 50+ times a game. Not having perfect farms makes people less happy with the game.

I’m actually interested in the autofarm addition solely because in the late game my farmers will randomly go idle even though I have plenty of wood and they haven’t been attacked. Early game I’m placing farms slow enough that it won’t matter, but the random idle farmers have been bugging me for months so I’m kind of looking forward to this tbh.

I like both. The farms because it's one of random small things which are not really perceived by the viewer. And just really impossible to gauge what you lose or gain by doing it a bit more or less efficient. I think remembering to put down farms when they need to be put down is the real skill. So when you look at the dash and see x number of farms, it gives an accurate picture of what it means in terms if what you can afford per minute.

I'm a software developer and I've noticed that for the past decade, Microsoft has been aiming to gain market-share with the disabled. Accessibility is huge in Microsoft culture now. These QOL changes aren't necessarily intended for pros like Hera and most players on the ladder. These changes are for making the game more accessible, especially those using unorthodox methods to play, such as those gigantic fighting-pad looking controllers meant for disabled people who may or may not have two functioning hands. People like T90 are afraid of dilution of skill expression by lowering the skill floor for farms, and I can understand what he's getting at. I prefer AOE2 over AOE4 because of the small details the 'clunkiness' brings to combat. A single-tile gap in your wall can let a raid in. A single unit can raid and body-block a villager from retreating. Hell, I've watched Hera miss a nice quickwall to box in a group of cavalry because his own farm was in the way. Compare that to AOE4 where you can't use buildings to quickwall (there's always a gap to walk through), and units all have collision (no body blocking). Even the Mongols who are known for early raids in AOE2 feel underwhelming and unimpactful. I think at the end of the day, this change is a net positive for AOE2. You still have to make a conscious decision to add more farms (unless you're playing with auto-economy on XBOX), farms you place can still be deleted for quickwalls, and it gives player more focus on the other aspects of the game (like walling up, and combat). As for the auto-scouts, this could potentially have much more impact on the game and for newer players, but it's ultimately something that you could do before (shift-queueing a unit on the minimap). Plus, think of all the free kills you get from scouts running under your castle. Also, I've never seen anyone mention this, but if you play the campaigns, there are a lot of missions where you get scouts, but the scenario doesn't treat them like your "starting scout", even if you get them seconds after the scenario starts. This way you can enjoy all the campaign missions with auto-scout (perfect for new players). P.S. I think it's hilarious that Hera has the AK-47 build on his bookmark bar!

I am not fan of any mod. The player need to do things themselves. 2025 we will have TCs that que one villager after another by themselves and a villager option you can pre-place houses for 0 wood cost and have that villager go place and build them for real when population vs total population is 3 or less.

I can already say after a couple of Arena games with Bengalis post patch and rathas still sucks. Until they gain some movement speed and cav armor against skirms, they'll keep been weak units.

They should've never gotten rid of PT in the first place. Rathas are effectively still the same but now their EAs are nerfed. They were also the only EA civ with PT, so now that diversity's gone too. What the devs should've done instead is buff only the Ratha's Pierce Armour (without removing PT), and give 100% accuracy to Rathas and EAs on Paiks. Those changes on their own won't completely address the Ratha's problems but it's a better change than what they did now. Personally I'd prefer making the Bengalis Light Cav more viable than buffing Ratha movespeed, or give them Supplies and Gambesons so that their Militia line isn't subpar even with Champions.

The auto-farm-placement is taken straight from AoE4 and won't make a major difference on any level. I think Spirit of he Law has proven that differences between "perfect" farm placement (as mush as it gets aroudn mills because of the missmatched sizes) and worse is not significant, especially on the lower levels. For the tournaments, its great for AoE2. And Microsoft or RedBull seems desperate to get the vietnamese community back. AoM we know almost nothing (like about the game) and for AoE4 we get a glorified showmatch. Really dropped the ball for MOST SOLD DLC EVAAR.

As a casual player, imho auto farm is very good update cuz you can actually look into army, map, strat instead of spending long time(at least for me or players who doesn't have time to practice a lot) to focus on placing farms. After all aeo is RTS, not a farm village. Doesn't everyone should have great APM or least to say game decide on how good you place on your farms. In high level strategy is the defining factor most of the time but in lower levels needs to transform into strategy game as well. These kind of life quality updates not even orthodox or enough, learning curve of AEO2 already too long even with update. You can understand why those updates are required if you watch beginners gameplay who lose entire army meanwhile dealing with economy. Those who already expertise on economy(mostly farming) management doesn't need to complain about the update since they can enjoy more competitive game which actually decide on macro/micro strategy instead seeking for mechanics from the first relase.

Personally while neither changes are a mechanically big deal, or even noticeable to some I suspect, I am starting to get worried about these "qol" features from a matter of principle. It was nice to look at the farms and have them feeling human and personal and not dropped by a machine. There is character and value to this and it helps the game feel alive in ways modern rts which love their automaton often fail at. And yea its not something i'll even notice much, and i have liked past QOL features...but this does feel...new rts like...in the bad way. It's really is not a big deal and I should emphasize that, but humans placing the farms is something that added to the game in a small way, and if the devs think this is ok, then mabye next time something bigger changes and we just have to live with it forever. Its not a huge deal, but I honestly can't like it.

AoE4 uses farm placement. It works well there. I do not see any reason for controversy, other than the usual shit. By usual shit, I mean the tendency of folks to jump on the outrage bandwagon. Does this mean "auto farm". No. It means auto farm placement. Which helps keep the focus on elements of the game that, I, personally want to focus on. Do I watch games to be in awe of people's farm micro? No. Do you? Probably not. It's also important to remember that this does not come at the expense of other fixes to the game. Developers are working all the time on different features. The addition of features does not mean that other fixes are not being worked on. There really should be no controversy here at all.

Anyone who is controversial over the QOL issue need to get a life. 5 scouts literally follows each other. Even 1 or 2 scouts literally scout so much slower than shift click so it literally matters 0%. Unless you are really bad (no offense) you can scout much better. The Autofarm features is literally placing farms perfectly. Maybe it will safe 1 or 2 seconds but meh. Also I rather be spending the game fighting etc than trying to place farms. QOL is amazing im happy as a casual player.

The ideal thing to do with these "Quality of Life changes" is NOT to make them 100% effecient. E.g. Farm placements can be like Hera's farms in lategame. Autogarisoning resources can be with a delay of 1-2 seconds, etc. This will make sure beginners can use these to make life easier, but also pros can do these actions conventionally for greater efficiency.

Here's my take on automatic features: If the automation does a sub-optimal job (like auto-scout or Xbox auto economy), then its okay, because you are incentivized to do it manually if you want full value. But if the automation does the job perfectly (like auto farms), then its a problem.

All these QoL features, like autofarm and autofarm placement are meant to shift focus from the eco to fighting. And it seems to be based on streaming and tournaments. For the viewers, it's more cool to look at fights and micro, instead of looking at someone placing farms. So, a move to make the game stronger in the e-sports division.
