I remember 20 years ago going out on the party boats out of Captree and it was a source of great joy to get to know some of the older fishermen. Now that I'm older and unable to fish all but on the rarest of occasions I really appreciate your videos. My instincts are still good though, when you hooked into that big slob and he was pulling line I'm saying to myself "tighten that drag" and a second later I see your left hand reach down and get it done. A great underwater segment to show us all exactly what you're experiencing on the drop and why you wait for the fish to pick it up and swim off with it. Thank you so much for helping me keep the spirit alive and for all of us as we get older to keep those juices flowing for as long as possible. ✌

With Albies I find that if you let the lure sink just a couple feet while you are in them they hit it more often than not. They are super super picky fish and it’s hard to find schools that stay on the surface long enough to get more than one cast in. But if you make the perfect cast right in them let the lure sink down a few feet and watch the magic happen

The tog fishing in jersey right now is on fire and the exact opposite of this. There’s no bait stealers around so I’m throwing down tiny pieces of crab and hooking up almost every cast with keeper sized fish because you can be certain the little bait is on their mouth.

How heavy do you think that big fish was?
@KarimElayoubyFishing2 жыл бұрын
"Contact, but not pressure" This is sooo damn true. Completely taught line, I'll get infrequent pecks. And i'm fishing in a spot with truly no by-catch/interference fish. A little less tension, just contact, and the blackfish get bolder and really start chomping on it. Curious what such a little nuance could influence their likelihood to bite. Been pulling up some real donkeys on the porgy jig. Much better hook-up odds, I find, compared to a classic bottom fishing hook and sinker rig.

@shawnboisclair36962 жыл бұрын
@@oneharry_og yeah typically he pairs things up with a 2500/3500 with the 15lb test but maybe the 5000 is better for this type of fishing. I just want to buy both together. if possible. Not sure if he is going to get back on the question, I'm sure he is busy and likely back in Florida sorting things out with his Winter home.
@jd12elephant2 жыл бұрын
You need the higher drag for blackfish. The first few seconds after hooking up you have to be able to power them out before they take you deep in to the rocks and cut you off. It can be done on light set ups, but especially for a beginner the mechanical advantage of having more drag and the gear ratios of a bigger reel increases your chance of landing the fish.
@shawnboisclair36962 жыл бұрын
@@jd12elephant that was my thoughts but in the past he used a smaller reel for tog. Better more power than less.
@shawnboisclair36962 жыл бұрын
@@jd12elephant I did look at the ratings and all are 20lbs of drag, maybe the larger reel is just better matched with the rod. the 5000 certainly hold more line but the gear ratios are identical but making its the line pickup that's at play here. Anyways thanks again I'm sure you post gets to the heart of the issue.

That mindset is why certain species are lowering in population. Big females should always be returned, there's just no need to keep them. If it's a trophy fish, pictures and measurements, with a safe release is much more satisfying, than killing it just because.
