In this video I go through the challenges I ran into while trying to fit a Rollmaster double-row timing chain into my Gen VI 454 BBC. You'll see details about the timing sprockets, harmonic balancer spacing, crank keyway issues, clearance with the aluminum timing cover and the proper crank bolt length.

Please make sure to check out my other video where I found the CORRECT crankshaft key. The one in this video is not correct.

You can't even get that crankshaft bolt any longer. I bought a 67chevelle w/ that L29 454 and it was missing the crank bolt! Explains why the belts kept jumping. I just used a grade 8, 2" bolt.

Pretty good info but get you a degree wheel and check your intake centerline to verify cam timing against the card. For so many years now manufacturers put 4 deg advance on the pin. I always run my camshafts straight up. Of course I've played with adv and ret from straight up but all it does is move the peak power around about 200 rpm per 4 deg. A straight up install using intake centerline will measure in degrees the same as the LDA or "line center" such as 110, 108 etc. Also it was great to see you use a balancer install tool. In anyone reading don't have one then get one. You can do other cool stuff with it too other than just installing balancers. They make great bushing installers in some applications.

@williamstamper442 Thats good advice on the degree wheel. I don't have one, but one of these days I need to get one of those and learn how to use it correctly.

If I ever come across that, I'm machining my own key!! As far as that Balancer bolt, that must be a "special" Gen VI thing! Everything I look up is all 1/2-20 x 1.55". But for what you're doing with this engine, I wouldn't worry about re-using that bolt, it'll work fine.

@Anarchy-Is-Liberty Yep I re-used the old grade 8 bolt. Strange that ARP hasn't figured this out yet for the Gen VI motors. They've been around since 1996!

Great video thanks for putting it out there. I noticed you heated up the harmonic balancer. I’ve heard of people using assembly lube on the crank when putting the balancer in place. Did you do that?
@vikingmech

@Michael-Homerepair76 Nope I've never used any kind of lube when installing balancers. As long as you have a good install tool they normally go on without any trouble.

i noticed the gen 6 balancer are you using the serpentine that came with it or using gen 4 pulley's? any issues with gen 4 stuff like bottom pulley not fitting or mis alignment?

@mikeuva2273 I'm using all the stock brackets and accessories that came with the gen 6 motor. I'm sure the gen 4 stuff could all be made to fit as well. I haven't tried that so I couldn't speak to gen 4 stuff.

Something is wrong with that keyway. If it were me, I'm making a custom key. Rectangular.

@aaronhietala4709 Any advice on how to do that would be welcomed. Those are made from hardened steel.

Google 3/16x3/8 rectangular key stock. That should put you close to where you need to be. I don't know about hardened, I've never encountered a hardened key. Not saying you're wrong. Most keys I've replaced were on large electric motors on production machines.
