I made this video some time ago.
Building up muscle tone is an essential part of changing the balance within the muscular and postural systems. Please balance the efforts to build up;
a) your muscle effect and
b), your tongue effect,
The differences are explained in more detail here;
• What Makes A Face Attr...
And understand the inner U and the outer U.
Most people with malocclusion have a subacute jaw joint problem, so it is best to avoid a gargantuan chewing marathon only, and consider
1) tongue chewing;
• Tongue Chewing By Dr M...
2) big bolus chewing (this video) and
3) tongue exercises as well.
Work hard but keep in balance, best wishes MM
NB; this is not an advert for anything, it is an informational video. In no way do I encourage anyone to consider treatment with me. Do not expect me to "treat" anyone, all I will ever do is help you to help yourself.

I'm 35 years old, starting the chewing gum therapy at 34 and I can swear it works. At 16 I had crooked teeth, my canines were on top of all the other teeth, so I was taken to an orthondontist who extracted a perfectly good tooth to get his job done. I was left with a v shaped palate, an ugly narrow smile and puffy cheeks. My chin was retracted, developed a hook nose. So I stocked up on gum and one year later my face looks completely different: my palate is wider and my teeth look more straight, my lips accomodate my smile nicely without dark gaps at the corners. I started getting hollow cheeks, and the biggest bonus my side view. More prominent and horizontal mandibular bone , less double chin, and less childish. I know my bones didn't change at this age, but the teeth moved to a better position. Thank you Dr Mew!!!

Your bones absolutely CAN move at your age and decades beyond. There's a guy who was on the Joe Rogan podcast a couple of years ago who's well into his 50's, and he only started using a palatal expander a few months prior, and he has widened his jaw by a huge amount and says that he has added a lot of extra bone mass and weight to his skull.

I'm 17 and I've been following your videos about a year now. Yesterday, December 6th, my mother realized that my cheeks have gone away and realized my face was so skinny now compared to before. I even realized it. My cheekbones are much bigger and jawline more visible. My chin is still pretty far back tho. But she blamed my facial appearance on getting a lack of sleep and not eating enough... haha! SHe will never know that Orthotropics did this to my face.

No. If anything real eating is a better exercise. Two head of romaine lettuce will have a much bigger effect. Chewing a bolus is super ineffective and it doesn’t open up the whole system. Notice his giant jaw but tiny neck? Chewing gum also desensitizes how you perceive food and then slowly it. It’s like your brain wondering what’s up with this piece of food

Fascinating. I’m 39 and I’ve always had a very small mouth and a weak chin. It has gotten much worse with age, and especially during Covid, when I stayed at home with my kids, sitting in a terrible position all day. Because of this I developed bad posture and a forward head position. It was recommended that I begin injections to my lower face to correct this cosmetically but I would rather fix the problem as much as possible at the root before I go that route. I know I can’t do a ton at this age, bone-wise, but I have downloaded the app and began Mewing, along with the daily exercises. One thing I noticed is that my tongue was completely lying on the bottom of my mouth which I’m working to correct. I’ve also realized, by watching this video, that my tongue almost doesn’t move at all when I’m eating. Crazy. No wonder why I have developed these issues 😢

DJ he diffidently thinks forward posture reduces an involvement. Which makes sense it would put more strain on the back erectors. Forward head posture also reduced forces of the tounge. You can try a little experiment arch your head back far and you’ll find the back of the tounge pull away from the roof of your mouth (assuming you know proper tounge posture). Foward head posture is essential arching the head back otherwise you’d be looking at the floor

Hi Mike, got a few questions. Is it ok to clench the jaw slightly during the day at times when I don't have gum with me? Also, are there examples of people improving their face as an adult doing your method? I'm in my mid twenties and want to know if improving is still possible? How many hours should I chew gum each day?
@Grays_Plays
@Grays_Plays 6 жыл бұрын
It is possible to change the structure as an adult, it just takes time. The lady in this video at about the 51 minute mark shows significant change within a relatively very short time period, enough to validate the theory, the rest is up to you and your efforts. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6HdfWZ7idqcgcU As for how long to chew, start with an hour and see how you do. If it's too much cut back, if it's too easy add more time, but lean on the side of caution with how hard you go at it and make sure to work on your tongue posture with just as much focus, as the balance between the two things is important to avoid problems. And personally I'd advise against clenching the jaw deliberately as you don't want to damage the teeth and you could possibly run the risk of that by chewing hard without anything between the them to cushion the impact.

Hey Dr. Mew, quick question on sleeping posture. Is there an optimal sleeping posture that we should try to achieve for proper facial development? Seems like this hasn't been a very much talked about topic despite us spending nearly 1/3 of the day sleeping. Is it better to sleep on your back, with no pillow, just a little folded shirt to lightly fit between and support the natural curve of your neck, which will make sleeping a lot more comfortable, I find that my posture is much better back sleeping and ditching my pillow, I'm going to continue doing this and see if i see any other changes.

Good question. My hypothesis is sleeping on your side or stomach can cause your face to become narrower. Because then you lay on the side of your face. Think about how much pressure that is (it makes your face all wrinkled too, not nice) and the fact that the pressure of lips and tongue can already have a dramatic difference.

When I chew with my mouth open, I feel more engagement of the masseter and the zygomaticus muscles. Is this desirable or should I focus on closed-mouth chewing as you instruct even though it feels less intense? Also, does holding the bolus against the cheek contribute to buccinator hypertrophy we are trying to counteract? Thanks!
@Grays_Plays
@Grays_Plays 6 жыл бұрын
Probably not the best thing to do as chewing with the mouth open will encourage poor oral posture habits, and even though it might be harder and feel less effective it's probably more beneficial in the long run to focus on getting things right. As for buccinator hypertrophy, just try to avoid using the swallowing muscles much and you'll be fine. Try to minimise their involvement when you're chewing, that's about all you need to focus on.

Will this make your face wider? Get rid of double chin? Get rid of turkey neck? Make skin and face look younger? Do you chew a certain amount of times on each side to make it look symmetrical? Do you push your tongue left up right up, left up etc? Can you use a sugar free gum? If your mouth is closed, does that stop your stomach filling up with air?

TBT; Tongue Between Tooth; sorry this can be a problem for people with a significant difference between their resting and biting position, then the TMJ can get stressed easily. Try tongue chewing. I must do a video on this, a little more complicated and further down the wormhole but you need some advice on this. Try not to bite with you teeth too much and work on your tongue on the roof to calm down over bitting; kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWTXpmqjf8qDfas #mikemew

Dr. Mew, I couldn’t care any less on what kind of gum a patient will chew. This is a very interesting adjunct to the myofunctional exercises i have patients do. I have some concerns of the continous gum chewing for a long period of time though. Isn’t that like moving your knee joints for a long time, any effects on the TMJ . I always tell my patients not to chew gum for more than 5 minutes. Thank you for all your work.

Red Mouse, I am guessing that you are a dental professional. My concern is that we are all living in a very strange period in human existence. Nothing is normal, if you met a hunte gatherer you would have little in common. And they, not you, are normal!!!! I think that you will find most of the answers to your questions here; The Cause And Cure Of Bruxism And Clenching kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWTXpmqjf8qDfas The main thing to take is that these people wore their teeth almost completely away if they lived to a ripe age (50 yoa), with little signs of any damage. Clearly we could discuss TMD as well, which I do here (kzbin.infoplaylists?shelf_id=3&view=1&sort=dd in one of the play lists) which needs updating, but in general I feel that you need to keep the tongue effect and the mastication effect in balance and this is the modern problem. So it is a lack of balance not excess chewing which is the issue, so try Tongue Chewing kzbin.info/www/bejne/kH_SlHaAg86WqMU #mikemew

I am very grateful sir for the video that you have posted in your YT channel. I have been doing it since a few weeks. Actually I have got a slight overbite , What I wanted to ask is since I have got an overbite how should the teeth be placed while mewing. My Condition_ Having an overbite my upper teeth(Jaw) are slightly ahead of below ones. when it is so(i.e. in overbite postion) my upper molar premolars and most of back teeth are in contact of down ones. But if i try to make contact of my front teeth I cannot make contact of back teeth. SoWhat should I do while mewing??Should I make contact of my front teeth and not care about contact of back teeth or should i remain in same overrbite position and do mewing??

Dr mew please help me out. My jaw surgeon says I need 2 jaw surgeries. 1st is to do a SARPE surgery to widen my upper palate and then place a palate expander for a few months in my mouth... after a few months he will do the 2nd surgery which will bring my upper jaw forward. I have a crossbite, and I believe my upper palate got narrower and narrower due to missing molars (4) I am not sure about this surgery as I think that my face muscles gotten very weak also due to missingg tooth... do you think mewing is enough to fix my crossbite, sunken jaw bone(maxilla) and my palate that gotten smaller and smaller?
