Mewing is where you engage your tounge from the very back of your pallette and push up with the very back of your tounge while pushing it foward... in a sweep.. this will help widen the upper arch as you push up against the maxila. It is also advised to do strong chewing for lower jaw growth. Whilst keeping good head neck and back posture. The entire tounge should be kept on the roof of the mouth most of the time with lips closed and teeth lightly together... and generslly sit/stand up tall and shut your mouth teeth lighyly together with tounge on the roof of your mouth.

Depends on your bone plasticity. Cells are in constant dividing and changing, so everyone has a degree of plasticity. Growing up I definitely breathed more through the nose, but I don't know what my tongue posture was, I think both as a kid and as a yound adult (I'm 23) it's been resting at the bottom quite a bit. Also, often I catch my teeth not really touching and the tongue filling the little strip of space between the teeth while touching the roof of the mouth as well. Right now _I think_ my tongue doesn't fit in the palate as it also touches both the upper set and part of the bottom set of teeth when I push it there. I'm not sure if that means it doesn't fit or if it's ok. My question is: I want to widen my palate even though I don't have any health problems. Is that ok to do? Is it dangerous? Great video! I did not know about the Vivos appliance. If you get more information about it I would like to know how it is different from the DNA appliance. I visited their homepage but I could not find any images etc of the appliance. Like another commenter here I too am "mewing". Meaning that I am applying correct resting oral posture while breathing through my nose at all times during day and night and that I am swallowing correctly at all times. Basically, it's the same thing as myofunctional therapy. I'm an adult and in the 3 months I have been doing this I have noticed significant change, I have measured it very thoroughly. It should be mentioned though, that I in addition to everything mentioned above also press upwards with my tongue a lot during the day. I do this to help strengthen the tongue and to improve my resting tongue posture. UPDATE: If anyone else tries to do this keep in mind that the maxilla is very plastic for a bone. Pay close attention to the changes that happen. You do not want to rush the process and risk doing damage. If you do this, my advice is to only do it in the very beginning of the process to help you with tongue posture and tongue strength. I am curious, do you know about the work of Dr. Mike Mew? I'm asking this because I am wondering if all people involved in this new movement (if you will) within orthodontics are collaborating or not. Dr. Mike Mew to me seems to be the most vocal doctor about the importance of the tongue, for example through his youtube page. He also claims significant change is possible even in adults that have lacked correct resting oral posture during their earlier lives, even though he is very clear in that it can take a long time.

Is there any hope of expansion without surgery? Are there any dentists who can do that? I am very sure that there are none in my country Turkey.

If you have a narrow palate and then they expand it, how will the upper jaw fit on the lower jaw??

what should I should I do if my bottom arc is too small? my bottom dental arc is smaller than my top, I've noticed quite recently as I discovered mewing. my bottom arc is too small my top dental arc, which makes my teeth rest to the side this in turn has made my face asymmetrical. I don't know what I can do to fix this, any advice would b helpful.

Hi Sarah, i know this is 6 years old but im nearly 43 years old, im really bad with severe sleep apnea and the CPAP doesn't help, been on it for 2 years now, ive also had nasal septum surgery and turbinate but i still cant breathe well, still mouth breathing, i have a class 3 lower jaw and a v shaped narrow/deep upper palate but my care here over in Manchester England seems to be non existent as they dont think any kind of jaw surgery will benefit me, can you suggest anything to me please, suffering immensely here, even my back and neck are really sore, i cant even sleep on my side anymore due to constant pains!

But why is a narrow palate passed down from parents to children? Is the bone growth genetic?

i developed a narrow upper jaw because i had crowded teeth so i got braces and 2 teeth extractions from my upper jaw 8 years ago when i was 13 now i realized im slightly developing a crossbite too because of my narrow upper jaw plus my back teeth are not touching each other properly and i have jaw pain i went to see many dentists and nobody has ever told me about palatal expanders one of them even told me about getting a jaw surgery but then added it doesnt neccessary that much i kinda felt angry when i learned about palatal expanders by myself but i did so many researches about my problems now ill try another dentist and talk about expanders and ill definitely write here what the dentist tells me

They tried fixing this for me as a kid with a expander with this thing that had a key it was cemented in my mouth and it got bigger every so many weeks or whatever it was incredibly painful come to find out every time the key was turned it expanded it was spreading a slice in the lid of my mouth!! They had installed it way to close to upper part of my mouth it was so painful. I tear up remembering it and now deal with almost biting my tongue all the time.

does narrow palate cause TMJ issues? I am in my 30s and my dentist want me to have an upper/lower expander. I am not convinced.

That dot that is furthest back doesn’t seem far back enough. If that’s all…. Wow I’m actually able to do it haha. I’ve been working hard on being able to push on the veeeery furthest back part of the hard part of the roof of my mouth. Am I going overboard?

I think mine has to do with chronic thumbsucking as a child. The roof of my mouth is so high. Had braces to fix it in my 30's which worked but I didn't keep up with the retainer and now the mouth has moved back into the narrow shape. Which makes me think that the body naturally wants to create a narrow palate. Not sure but I want to change it back again.

Hi, I have a narrow upper arch due to extractions for previous orthodontic treatment. Years later my teeth have now shifted back and I am left with a narrow upper arch and crossbite. Please, what can I do? I am almost 30 and some of my teeth are being damaged by my bite.

Hello Sarah, I need some advice with my daughter's treatment. I know it is difficult to do so without seeing her, but anything you can suggest will be great. She is 13.5 and has a narrow upper and lower jaw due to the fact that she was suckling on her tongue, yes the tongue, I did not make a mistake. I don't really think she has sleep apnea, but I guess I cannot be 100 % sure, don't know much about it. She is generally breathing throuh her nose. She still has 9 of her baby teeth and the one , tooth that fell out a few months ago, still does not have the adult tooth growing yet. We found a doctor who is offering to do the upper jaw widening with Crozet appliance, but he is very expansive. The upper treatment is going to be around $4000, with the total for lower and upper estimate running into 7200. Plus he says she will require a therapist like you, which will be additional 3000. What concerns me is that he doesn't guarantee anything and the treatment is very expensive. Is this generally the price, from what you Know? Should the myofunctional therapy be included in the treatment? Do you think this will work at her age and make the jaw wider, she is going to be 14 in August? My worry is that the doctor is taking advantage of us because he is the only one in our area offering his treatment.

Mewing has not been scientifically supported. In fact, studies on tongue posture demonstrated that placing one’s tongue on the roof of the mouth decreases heart rate variability.

Hi Sarah. Were you also a mouthbreather before? From your looks, i'd guess you were? And I assume you have correct or more optimal tongue posture now than you did before. I was wondering if you (still) notice improvement in your facial form? (for example, wider face, wider palate, wider jaw, etc etc)
@sarahkh127 жыл бұрын
Hello, yes I was a mouth breathing kid for sure. I have all of the facial growth and skeletal/dental problems as an adult that result from that, unfortunately. That's what lead me to get into this field :) I think if I didn't know about myofunctional therapy (correct tongue posture and breathing, etc) I'd have sleep apnea and chronic TMJ issues or much bigger problems by now. I have definitely seen positive changes to my appearance over the last 8 years, but more than anything, I know the problems are not getting worse as I age, so that's good! Great observation though :)

I had all of my top molars extracted a few years ago bc of damaged root canals...im getting implants...do you think that the implants will help my face look more like it used too less narrow and more full? I have a narrow palette but my tongue is always at the top of my mouth, i dont breath through my mouth, but I do feel some restriction in my nose breathing...should I relsease my mild tongue tie, get implants, and do palette expansion? thank you!

Would u like to exchange experience? I got my 2 premolard extracted, and now my palates are pretty narrow although I do not breathe through my mouth and my posture is correct. I am thinking of widening my palates and getting implants. Where r u from?
