I have an 8 cam HD IP based video setup too, it's great! I run it, along with my home automation services, homebirdge to bridge them to homekit, media server (plex etc) on a mac mini from 2013 with a small 12tb array. You guys throw tanks at small problems though, i love it.

I'm shocked you didn't build your own! I built a 30 camera system from the ground up. The system itself cost less than $1,500 with 20tb of non-redundant storage (we could add additional drives for redundancy, but I was on a budget). It serves 30 cameras with live recording and could easily handle 50. I build the whole thing on an AMD 8350 with just the stock cooler. It stops out under 30% duty cycle. Cameras were all under 100 and run on 4 separate gigabit ethernets, so we can run full 720p on all the cameras if we wanted to.

It's definitely an awesome server; but I do gotta wonder - only 8GB of RAM? I would think a video server, specifically would need as much as it can get.

EposVox why? the video feed is constantly being saved to the hardrive and cleared from the RAM the only thing that will really be in the RAM at any given time is what you would be seeing on the screen. Once its no longer on the screen it will already be on the drive and out of the RAM

EposVox That is true for video *editing* machine and a NAS, ie. a machine that hosts files in the network. In this case, as Brendan Forish said, the video isn't kept in the memory for a long time, really. It loads what the cameras transmit, then it saves the data on the harddrive. There's no recompressing being done on the data, as that would probably be done on the cameras.

But what about the software showing all of the video feeds, de-warping it (as Linus said), controlling them, etc? Obviously for pure writing video streams to disk, much RAM isn't needed, but for those multiview setups and interactions, I would think some would be.

EposVox Of course you would need some, but I doubt it needs more than 8 Gigs :) They aren't RAW video streams. Not sure about the exact setup, maybe there's a different server that does all that scanning, and the actual surveillance server just archives everything away and serves it to clients (and the other server)

They mainly record in 4k, which I don't think can play back in 60 fps, but I'm not sure. May depend on the camera or if youtube supports it yet.

Running multiple camera's 24/7 takes a tremendous amount of storage space. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean it's the smart thing to do. Most people don't care to see their stuff getting stolen in breathtaking visual quality, as long as the video is clear enough to see the culprit. For reference: 1 minute of 1080p 60 fps (using h.264 compression) equals to ~1 GB. Let's use the same settings but with 24 fps (movies are shot in 24 fps), the file size is now only 403 MB per minute.

Privacy as a concept does not mean much to you, does it? Selective surveillance of critical environments i get, but dragnet surveillance of everything? Kitchen for dishes? Speaking about overkill... I would suggest you read up on studies about worker fatigue regarding surveillance in working environments and correlated drop in efficiency and motivation over time. Workers need privacy, places to retreat and feel "safe". 10h/5 surveillance hurts you more then it helps over time, even if it sounds terribly cool at first (total control muhaha).

The dishes thing was probably a joke and even if i wasn't, I highly doubt someone will get stressed out if Linus' tells them off for not cleaning up their mess. They're a small group, I doubt stuff like that was for anything but shits and giggles. Furthermore, losing stuff around the workshop is kind of a big deal for them. A mariokart replica is harmless but say a 1000 dollar CPU would be disastrous. And finally, I have never heard of a real world example of someone being stressed out or having less than optimal mental health because of surveillance. Nearly every company does this. To prevent burglary but also to protect the workers and prevent them from stealing from the company.
