@@alanaschmude9094 these horses are worth millions of dollars and usually spend months in a pasture galloping around without even a halter. Then they’re confined to a stall for days and are having people run their hands over them, checking their mouth, having people make them trot out back and forth and then are shoved in a ring where there’s a loudspeaker and a voice shouting numbers behind him with people bidding on them. They’re scared and worth millions. The chain is to keep them from getting hurt and bolting.

Just look at places like Old Friends and the other OTTB retirement programs, none of them would've existed if it wasn't for what happened to Ferdinand.

@Linda Brown Most, if not all, of these fillies will end up as broodmares; they are valuable because of their pedigrees. The idea that any of these fillies will end up at slaughter is slim to nill.... Some of these colts will remain stallions, but most of them will eventually be gelded. I doubt if horses of this caliber would end up at slaughter as long as they remain in the U.S. But my heart always drops when stallions are sold to foreign countries. The Thoroughbred horses that end up at slaughter are horses that run at the lower ranks. I once bought a TB mare whose owner threatened to send her to a livestock auction. THOSE are the horses that end up at slaughter. But there is a much better safety net for TBs than there was even 50 years ago, and good people who go to these auctions to buy up TBs that would normally fall through the cracks. If you want to save a TB I can refer you to a reputable group that will help you do that.

Seattle Slew won the Triple Crown and was sold at an auction like this for $17,500. American Pharaoh was at another auction like this but Zayat changed his mind at the last minute and rebought him.

Medina Spirit, the (now disqualified) 2021 derby winner was $1000 dollars at a random auction if I remember correctly. The 2022 winner Rich Strike was bought for $30,000 at a maiden claiming race. These specific horses could go either way but great horses definitely go up for sale.

@@brookedavidson7305 I think you're either confused as to what I'm talking about or in denial as to how rampant the use of PEDs is at the highest levels. The list of top-money winning trainers in the US reads like a Who's Who of the worst repeat offenders. Most of them have over two dozen post-race positives on their rap sheets. We've recently had two trainers whose horses finished first in the Kentucky Derby, R. Dutrow and Servis, who have admitted that "they drugged every horse they ever trained". They passed nearly every drug test. The obvious implication, when you see the records of trainers like Baffert, Pletcher, Assmussen, Sadler, Hollendorfer and many others who have failed so many tests, is that they also drug every horse they train and only get caught once in a while. Otherwise, are these horses -- ie, the million-dollar yearlings and the like -- treated like kings? Of course they are. They're treated better than 99% of human beings, but they can't say "no" to the drugs.

@@mattm8932 I suggest that it's you who prefer to remain blind to the facts. Racing fans who deny the rampant use of steroids by nearly all of the top trainers and other PEDs by most of the biggest money winning trainers remind me of MLB's reaction when Jose Canseco said that 80% of the players were on the juice. It turned out he was wrong. It was closer to 95%. They remind me of Lance Armstrong fans who defended him right up until the last. They seem to think that the absence of absolute proof in the form of drug-positive tests is proof of innocence. It never has been in any sport. The facts are out there. You just have to accept them. Some think that Bob Baffert, with his 30 post-race postives, is some sort of "outlyer". He's not. His record is more or less "typical" among leading trainers. However his record and the records of several other top US trainers are probably worse than Dutrow's or Servis' records were, and they were ousted when wiretaps and FBI investigations revealed the extent to which they were cheating, ie, all the time.
